HEPHAESTUS is the Greek name for the Roman god of the forge, Vulcan. Birmingham has the world's largest iron statue, that of the Roman god, Vulcan. We named our Starfleet chapter the Hephaestus to give us ties to our city and to Star Trek, which has had its own Vulcan since 1966. Hephaestus forged armor and weapons for the gods. We create our own "armor and weapons" here, in our newsletter, so it is called THE ANVIL.

VICE ADMIRAL DANNY POTTS

Life is like a box of chocolates...

mend it for any comic fan. Heath Ledger played the part of The Joker in a way I’ve never seen it done, and he may have redefined the role forever as it appears on film. I’m not prepared to proclaim it ‘The Greatest Comic Film of All Time’, but it’s in the top 5.

If you haven’t noticed, I’ve been taking steps back from various Fleet-level and Region-level positions for the last few years. Between work, church, local chapter activities, family and illness, I’ve been burning the candle at both ends, and sometimes in the middle.

If you’ve been to the chapter web page in the last few months, you’ve probably noticed that Anvils haven’t been being loaded up in a while. I haven’t

I decided to let a lot of responsibility go, to simplify my life and relax more in my spare time. I can imagine your surprise, then, to discover myself back in the Region 2 CompOps position. Have no fear, though. The posting is temporary until a new Region 2 Chief of CompOps can be selected. There were several website links that were missing or out-of-date, and I’m one of the few people who still has the keys to the castle, and the knowledge of how to update the site.

been able to crack the code of what’s going on there. I’ve decided, however, to start looking at new ways to do our chapter site. More on this as I get time to work on it. I’d like to make an open call here for folks to contribute to The Anvil. Find something you enjoy, and share it with us. It doesn’t have to be something Trek-related. Recipes... Book reviews... Movie reviews... whatever you want. Just feel free to contribute!

Once a new Region 2 Chief of CompOps is chosen, I look forward to returning to my semiretirement!

Until next month!

We held our Summer Shindig again this year, and we were pleased to have Dennis and Jill Rayburn comeall the way down from Region 1 to make the affair. There were other activities over the weekend, and they managed to make them all! I finally saw “The Dark Knight”, and I recom-

Well, I missed the Annual Shindig and Cookout due to illness. But my sources tell me it was lots of fun. About 15 people attended. There were plenty of snacks and drinks, and two grills were available for cooking the steak, chicken, chops, or hot dogs folks brought. Folks could play Video Trivia or watch movies upstairs, while other games went on downstairs. The first game was the dinosaur race, which Katrina Mohney won. Her prize was all the dinosaurs. Then nine players duked it out in a game of Texas

Mattel Reveals New Star Trek R/C Toys

And if that wasn’t cool enough, there is a giant 4 foot version which comes with the same communicator and Tricorder. (see pics and video below)

It was just in June that CBS announced their new Star Trek licensing deal with Mattel, the world’s largest toy company, and we have already seen the beginnings of the 20Q product and this week at Comic Con Mattel are showing off prototypes of their very cool line of Tyco RC Flyer toys, which apparently have started new some new rumors, which we will debunk.

Mattel is displaying prototypes of the various R/C flyers, with two Enterprise designs. One is based on the movie era and another on the classic TV series 1701. John Ludwig, Mattel’s Tyco Product manager, tells TrekMovie that all the R/C fliers will likely be based on the refit because the shape (notably the swept back nacelle pylons) makes it more aerodynamic. One thing is for sure, neither of the ships being displayed were based on a design from the new Star Trek movie, unlike a rumor being floated by TrekWeb. However Ludwig tells TrekMovie that they will be making a R/C Enterprise from the new movie, but that will not be out until shortly before the movie. Mattel also hopes to expand the line to include ships from other Trek series as well, like a Voyager, Enterprise D and more.

Fly your own Enterprise - but not the new movie Enterprise…yet Mattel’s Tyco is planning on four different flying Enterprise toys for release in early 2009. The entrylevel toy, called the ‘Power Charger,’ is $20 and comes has no radio controller. You just charge it up and it flies around in a circle. For $40 you get the same toy but with an R/C controller. This standard model will also come available as a Klingon Bird of Prey. There is a Deluxe Enterprise for $70 which is a bit bigger and of better construction, plus you get a very cool controller that is shaped like a TOS communicator and you control the flight via a touch-screen. There is also a Tricorder which acts as the charger.

NCC-2 2004 members will be wearing the colors associated with their departments in the original series era. Scotty, Uhura and others in engineering, security and communications will wear red; Spock, McCoy and others in medical and science will wear blue, and command will wear gold.

‘Star Trek XI’ Command Uniform Chris Pine let drop a bit about the command uniform for Star Trek XI in a recent interview. As reported by Sci Fi Pulse, the command uniforms worn by Kirk, Sulu and Chekov will the familiar gold color of the original series era Star Trek. Pine was discussing Captain Kirk and said, “if you see that gold shirt, you know what you’re looking at.”

Working on Star Trek XI was enjoyable for Pine and he feels that fans will enjoy the movie. “It is fantastic. I had a lot of fun,” he said. “I think the movie that J.J. [Abrams], Bob [Orci] and Alex [Kurtzman] wrote, and I got a chance to participate in, is really good. People will be surprised at how good it is. It’s pretty spine-tingling.”

When asked directly if Kirk would be wearing Gold in the movie, Pine said, “Oh yes. I’ve probably given something away by saying that, but I’m so tired at this point, but you know its really funny because just the other day it was an imaginary ship in Burbank, but it does feel good and it was a real honor being asked to do it.” According to a report at TrekMovie, other cast

Doohan, the original Scotty. Pegg was glad for the contact, wanting Doohan to know that Pegg’s portrayal of Scotty would be respectful. “James Doohan’s son Chris got in touch with me which I wanted to get in touch with him anyway,” explained Pegg, “because obviously James had passed away and I wanted to at least have some connection with his legacy. So Chris got in contact and we had a little chat and stuff and I told him that I wanted to make sure that I wasn’t in any way sort of trying to parody what James did with the character because that would just be a completely stupid thing to do.”

Pegg On His ‘Star Trek’ Experience From casting to meeting actors familiar from one’s childhood, Simon Pegg describes his Star Trek experience. As reported by TrekMovie.com, from a podcast taken from a Kevin and Bean podcast, Pegg’s Star Trek journey began with an email from J.J. Abrams asking if he wanted to play Scotty. According to Pegg, after reading it several times, “I didn’t know what to do with it. It was kind of like yeah, yeah, of course I do...you need to ask?”

Stepping onto the Star Trek meant being with talented coworkers. “It was a daunting thing to come on because the whole crew was so good,” said Pegg. “You know, John Cho as Sulu, and Anton Yelchin as Chekov are so solid, and J.J [Abrams], he’s such a ball of energy, it feels so safe in his hands because he cares so much about it. He’s absolutely dedicated. [Zoe Saldana] was amazing. She really pulled Uhura off the page into 3D beauty,” said Pegg. “And Chris [Pine], who’s Kirk, has just got that fantastic sort of swagger, you know, that Shatner had and it’s… I think it’s going to be great, I’m so excited about it.”

Pegg was contacted by Chris Doohan, son of James

But what of working with Leonard Nimoy? “What was weird for me about doing Star Trek,” said Pegg, “was [that] it was known that Leonard Nimoy is in the film, and to be acting, to have him on set, to be near a character that I had known since I was a child...Not just the actor but the character. I rarely saw him out of his ears, you know, because he used to get into make-up first. It was phenomenal, and he was such a gentle, sort of brilliant guy.”

playing the younger Spock. “Zach Quinto, who does Spock, is phenomenally like...I mean, he looks like Leonard Nimoy. On set, out of the corner of your eye, you’d think it was Leonard, it was really weird.” Pegg was tight-lipped about any plot details, except to say where Spock was concerned, “Obviously there is some conjecture out there and it’s probably true.”

Pegg also had praise for Zachary Quinto, who is

supportive of it as possible. And I look forward to the day they call me and say they need me to go to work to get this movie out to the public.”

Spock’s Future Leonard Nimoy dropped hints about the future of the character for which he became famous.

One of his public appearances was a guest appearance on Raw Nerve, William Shatner’s new talk show. “Yeah, we had a wonderful conversation,” said Nimoy. “I think we spoke much longer and he got much more material than he needed for what is a half-hour show. We talked for a long time. I thought it was a very new and special and rich conversations. We touched on subjects that were never touched on before as well as reviewing some of the things we have talked about before. I think it is going to be quite wonderful to watch and I am looking forward to seeing it myself, but it is going to be edited so I don’t know what to expect. But I got a very nice call from Bill a week after we had done it thanking me and he felt we had got into some wonderful stuff.”

As reported by TrekMovie.com, the door is open for a reappearance of the beloved character even though it appears to be unlikely that he will appear in future films. “Oh, you should never say never,” said Nimoy,” when asked if his Star Trek journey was complete. “I don’t have any reason to believe there is going to be more, and then again there is nothing that happens to me in this movie that would prevent me from doing more. It is not like the end of Spock necessarily. So I don’t know, we will see.

Nimoy is currently working on his photography projects. “I am on another project and deep into it,” he said when asked about his latest project. “But it is premature to talk about it. I will just say it has to do with ‘identity.’”

Appearing as the popular Spock again means that Nimoy will be more high-profile and engaged in publicity for Star Trek XI. “I am looking forward to it,” he said regarding the forthcoming publicity blitz. “I am very excited about this movie and I want to be as

NCC-2 2004 where Deanna Troi took the place of Ilia as the mother-to-be. In this most recent incarnation of The Child, a Deltan will be the woman impregnated, as in the original version of the story.

Povill To Direct ‘Star Trek: Phase II’ Episode A story written for the original Star Trek Phase II of the 1970s will be filmed for the modern-day Star Trek: Phase II and directed by one of the writers who originally wrote the story.

Coming in to the original Star Trek: Phase II back in the 1970s, Povill was “assistant to the producer,” after which he became story editor. He co-wrote the Phase II series “bible” with Gene Roddenberry and was the associate producer for Star Trek: The Motion Picture.

As reported by Star Trek: Phase II Jon Povill, whose history with Star Trek stretches back to the 1970s, will be directing the next episode of Star Trek: Phase II. The Child, written by Povill and Jaron Summers, was originally written to have Ilia (Star Trek: The Motion Picture) impregnated by an alien. This storyline was not used in Star Trek: The Motion Picture but was recycled for Star Trek: The Next Generation,

After his Star Trek work, Povill became a producer and a script consultant on the sci-fi series Sliders. Povill also worked on the screen story for Total Recall, made in 1990.

“...the group of people who enjoy Star Trek on a grand scale, I’d say outside of Nelson Mandela and Mother Theresa, they are among the finest people on Earth.”

Spiner On ‘Star Trek: The Next Generation’ And ‘Dreamland’ To Brent Spiner’s surprise, Star Trek: The Next Generation lasted longer than a year.

In addition to acting, Spiner sings. He worked with Maude Maggart on Dreamland, having decided she would be perfect for the project after hearing her on the radio one day. “I had put a script of sorts together and was looking for a female vocalist to sing with,” explained Spiner. “While driving down Pacific Coast Highway listening to the ‘Jonathan Schwartz’ show, I heard this miraculous singer doing a Cole Porter number called, ‘Looking at You’. I was completely overwhelmed. I knew at that moment I had to have her on my CD. I got in touch with her publicist and sent her the script and, thank God, she agreed to do it. She is such a great artist and a wonderful young woman as well. It was thrilling working with her.”

As reported by blog.jr.com, Spiner took the show, thinking that it wouldn’t last long and he could make money to pay some bills and be done with it. “I auditioned,” said Spiner. “My agent sent me the script and I thought the character of Data could ultimately be fun and interesting to play. Also, I was convinced that the show (which was pre-sold for a year) couldn’t last very long and I wouldn’t be stuck on a TV series. I could pay my debts off and get on with my career. I clearly have no talent for determining what will succeed or fail. I think I had about six auditions for the part and finally, to my good fortune, they gave it to me.” Spiner is fond of the fans who supported him over the years.
