Queen Margot (France 1994, 144 minutes) the night of August 24, 1572 is known as the Massacre of St Bartholomew. In France a religious war is raging. In order to impose peace, a forced wedding is arranged between Margot de Valois, sister of the immature Catholic King Charles IX, and the Hugenet King Henri of Navarre. Catherine of Medici maintains her behind-the-scenes power by ordering assaults, poisonings and instigations to incest. Bloody, erotic and highly engaging. Background:
Patrice Chereau’s pic boasts some of French cinema’s notable talents (Isabelle Adjani, Daniel Auteuil and Vincent Perez). The supporting cast includes TRIPLE X’s Asia Argento.
Modern Times (USA 1936, 89 minutes) Charlie turns against modern society, the machine age, (the use of sound in films?) and progress. Firstly we see him frantically trying to keep up with a production line, tightening bolts. He is selected for an experiment with an automatic feeding machine, but various mishaps leads his boss to believe he has gone mad, and Charlie is sent to a mental hospital... When he gets out, he is mistaken for a communist while waving a red flag, sent to jail, foils a jailbreak and let out again. We follow Charlie through many more escapades before the film is out. Both hilariously funny and biting 1936 classic.
Background:
Chaplins last ‘silent’ film, filled with sound effects.
