Average Electricity and Home Size Data for Analysis 

 

 

According to the National Association of Home Builders, in 2004 the average home size was 2330 sq. ft. According to the Energy Information Association, the average electricity consumption in 2001 was 10,656 kWh/yr. with an average cost of 11.91 cents per kWh. That’s a cost of $1269.13/yr. That equates to 4.57 kWh per sq. ft. per year and an average cost of $0.54 per sq. ft. per yr. The initial goal is to be at 0 to 2 KWh per sq. ft. per yr. This would be a max consumption of 4660 kWh/yr.

Mechanical Changes 

Many mechanical changes can be made as well, including but not limited to:       

Higher SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficieny Ratio) Air Conditioning Tank less or Solar Water Heater Solar panels for the production of electricity Rainwater collection system Drip irrigation opposed to sprinklers Possible conversion to passive solar heating/cooling Small Wind Turbines

Practical Changes 

   

   

Create 12 volt solar system for charging cell phones, etc. (less energy wasted) Use solar landscape lighting, pool heaters, etc. Conversion to compact fluorescent lamps (CFL’s) can save up to 75% of initial energy according to the U.S. Department of Energy Purchase Energy Efficient Appliances (ENERGY STAR)

TURN OFF electrical items you aren’t using.

Overall Goals 

 

   

Research as many energy efficient and green materials as possible for a home upgrade based here in El Paso or similar desert climates. Analyze energy and cost savings when upgrading to these products and techniques. Analyze present and future cost, including repair and replacement. Analyze amount of time required to recoup investment in such products.
