Health Alert—Uganda Gulu, Uganda Intern July-August 2007 • Travelled around rural areas of Northern Uganda to various internal displacement camps, hospitals, schools, and villages to visit women and children living with HIV/AIDS. Documented their health, nutritional, and educational needs. • Travelled through different communities and schools for former child soldiers to engage in creative forms of HIV sensitization and sexual education. • Led the Sunday food program for children living with HIV/AIDS, ensuring that their nutritional and medical needs are met, and creating a fun and social environment. SOS Children’s Village Gulu, Uganda Teaching Assistant July-August 2007 • Taught Math, English, Science, and Geography during the night school for orphaned children who have had their social fabric and education disrupted by the civil conflict. Dr. Peter Centre Vancouver, B.C. Volunteer October 2008-present • Volunteer with the Day Program, preparing meals for residents in the Downtown Eastside living with HIV/AIDS and ensuring a nutritional diet for our patrons. • Also a volunteer with the Residence Program, spending time with residents of the Dr. Peter Centre, talking through psychological issues, accompanying them on walks, and engaging in social dialogue and activities. • Training on drug use, homelessness, prostitution, and physical/psychological conditions. Worked independently with Bordetella pertussis, the bacteria that cause whooping cough with research that focuses on identifying a mechanism of virulence of the bacteria. • Discovered a novel mechanism for which a scientific paper is submitted to be published as a coauthor. Research Assistant September 2009-present • Research Assistant to Dr. Neil Cashman, the Canada Research Chair in Neurodegenerative Diseases and Protein Misfolding, working on a potential Alzheimer’s vaccine in an interdisciplinary team. • Part of a team of leading experts spearheading research within the new field of prions and misfolded proteins as infectious agents to neurodegenerative diseases.
