September 7th, 2008

Join us for our Welcome Dinner and Dance! We will be celebrating our annual Welcome Dinner Friday September 12th. Please come and help welcome our new director, Fr. Ed Nowak and new music director, Jimmy Rose as well as all new members of the UCC family. As always we need your help. There are sign-up sheets in the back of church. We need help with food, paper products, clean-up and set-up. This year we have brought back the dance as part of our party. The theme is a Texas Welcome—so come with your cowboy hats and plan to eat and dance the night away.

TAILGATE—Get Ready to ROCK THE RAZORBACKS! When? Saturday, September 13th starting at 11:00 AM in the UCC parking lot The Longhorns battle the Arkansas Razorbacks at 2:30 PM that day, so wear ORANGE and get ready for game time with your friends at the UCC! For those who aren't planning on going to the game, we'll have a watch party in the basement after the Tailgate Party. The UCC will be providing water and lemonade. Feel free to bring along your tailgate necessities...we'll have a grill that you can use for your burgers and dogs. Feel free to bring snacks and desserts to share! Contact Brandon at [email protected] or Jimmy at [email protected] with questions. We'll see you there!

Our 100th Anniversary Weekend Celebration! The 100th Anniversary Weekend is quickly approaching! The UCC will be celebrating 100 years of Paulist ministry with a weekend of events on Saturday, Nov. 1st and Sunday, Nov. 2nd. Included in this special weekend will be 2 Masses of Thanksgiving (5:00 pm, Sat. celebrated by Cardinal Daniel DiNardo of Galveston-Houston and Bishop Greg Aymond of Austin; and 10:30 am on Sun. celebrated by Bishop Emeritus John McCarthy), a Cocktail Reception and Gala on Nov. 1st, and a family-friendly picnic on Nov. 2nd! It's going to be a very special weekend in the UCC's history! Flyers with more information can be found at the Front Desk. For more information, please call or email Amber Fogarty at 476-7351 x13 or [email protected].

Religious Education Classes for Children We are now forming RE classes for grades PreK through 12 for the 2008-09 school year. Most of the communication for this program is conducted through our RE Yahoo Group website. But you need to be a member and it's "restricted" group that requires an invitation. The site address is: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ catholiccenter-religious-ed/ If you're not a member, please email one of the following persons: Michael Burkhart at [email protected] or Anne Gilbert at [email protected]. Once you're "in" you can find registration forms for downloading and a calendar for the fall session. Our classes meet in the UCC on Sundays immediately following the 9:00 am Mass. As always, we need participation from many parents! We have a small group with small classes and the UCC has no Director of RE, so we ask all parents to seek The Spirit's guidance to contribute to our program. We encourage team or group teaching. If you have any questions, please call Anne Gilbert at 301-4312 or Mary Beck at 502-1225. Catholic Men Wanted! Lambda Omega Alpha, the Catholic men's fraternity of the UCC, invites all men interested in pursuing the virtues of Loyalty, Chivalry, and Spirituality to attend our last Pledge Information Sessions: Today, September 7, immediately following the 8pm Mass in the St. Francis Room. Become the UCC’s Communications Intern! We are looking for an English, Communication, Journalism, or Public Relations major who is interested in an unpaid internship for the 2007-2008 school year. The intern will be responsible for compiling and editing the UCC’s quarterly newsletter, writing press releases, developing an e-newsletter, and helping with other communication-related projects as assigned. Working 1015 hours per week, the intern will gain great professional experience for his or her resume while providing valuable service to the UCC. For more info, e-mail Vanessa Mena at [email protected].

Help Us Promote the UCC! Our stock of giveaways to new students is running low! We’re ordering cups, pens and snack clips to give away to soon-to-be UCC students and could use your help. Could you help pay for one of these? Cups $290; Pens $225; Clips $350. Another wishlist item is $270 for a popcorn popper, like the kind you see in your bank. If you’re able to help with any of these items, contact Fr. Ed at [email protected]

September 11th Anniversary Masses The seventh anniversary of the terrorist attacks on the United States will be commemorated on Thursday, September 11, 2008 at St. Austin Catholic Church with a Mass at 8 a.m. and a Memorial Mass at 6:00 PM. The University Catholic Center will have a Mass at 12:30 pm. Both churches will be open all day for prayers before the Blessed Sacrament. The intentions of the day are for world peace and for all the victims of 9-11 and the victims of terrorist acts and wars. All are invited to come and offer prayers.

Weekly Reflection Question: What are you willing to sacrifice to follow Jesus? What would be difficult for you to sacrifice?

Micah 6 Food Pantry UCC participates in the ecumenical Micah 6 food pantry through donation and volunteering on Thursdays and Saturdays. Many of the people we serve are homeless. Don’t forget our “neighbors” who have nothing during the fall. Please bring canned goods and packaged dry goods to Sunday Mass for the baskets near the fountain. We ask that you continue to support the Micah 6 Food Pantry with your generous donations. Contact Jim Harrington at [email protected] for more information. Look at that list of activities for the week. Forget the bulletin—pretty soon, we’ll need to publish a broadsheet newspaper for all of the events.
