A Look Back We had a great week! The class worked very hard to accomplish a lot of goals this week! I am very proud of them!

During math we concentrated on understanding what division is and writing division story problems. This is a hard concept to grasp, but we will achieve our goal. Once we understand this, anything is possible! Division also helps the students grasp more multiplication. During reading we began reading the book, Stone Fox. It’s an endearing story about a young boy who does not give up and who loves his

family very much. We concentrated on comparing and contrasting, setting, and renaming a chapter. During writing we focused on strong verbs and similes. The students are doing a great job using these elements in their writings! We’ll continue the favorite holiday prompt next week! We’ve used a lot of this week to review during social studies time. However, we were able to sneak in a few lessons about the Declaration of Independence and write our class constitution.

Classroom Rule: Bring back your checkup corrected each Monday.

A Peek to Next Week We will be completely loaded with things to accomplish next week! We will be taking our mid-year benchmarks in math, reading, and science next Tuesday—Friday. These

will be over everything that they have learned since the beginning of school. We’ll spend Monday doing some review games and activities. In the midst of benchmarks, we will still be

doing some of our regular stuff. We’ll continue to read Stone Fox and focus our attention on story elements, character analysis, summarizing, and sequence of events.

Next Week Cont. During writing we will continue our adventures with figurative language. The students will be introduced to metaphors and alliteration. We’ll also sneak in the use of onomatopoeia in our writing.

Tid-bits of information from the classroom! -Synonym = Same -Simile—uses like or as to compare two things -Division problems also have the total in them.

Ask Me, I Know! Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire. -William Butler Yeats

Give an example of a sentence that has a simile. What is a synonym for kind? What is the setting of Stone Fox?

Is this a multiplication or division problem? Shane went to the store and picked up 24 eggs that were in two packages. How many eggs were in each package?

Appreciation and Reminders We’ll be sending off our Christmas cards today! Thank to everyone who could help and a HUGE thank you to our students who worked so hard on these beautiful cards!
