Vocabulary Amniocentesis: A procedure in which the syringe is inserted up the female’s abdominal wall into the amniotic fluid surrounding the developing fetus. Anti-toxins: Extracts of blood fluids that contain antibodies & act more quickly than vaccines, usually produced by inoculating animals (horses, sheep, or rabbits) with specific toxins that stimulate the animal’s immune system. Psychoactive Drug: Any substance that directly alters the normal functioning of the central nervous system when it is injected, ingested, smoked, snorted, or absorbed in the blood. Detoxification: 1. To remove a poison or toxin or the affect of such from the body. 2. To free (as a drug user or an alcoholic) form an intoxicating or an addictive substance in the body or from dependence on or addiction to such a substance. Steroids: Any of the numerous compounds containing a 17 carbon four ring system consisting of steroids and hormones. Trachea: windpipe Ureters: Tubes that connect the kidneys with the bladder. Al-anon: A world wide self-help organization for people who are close to alcoholics. Generativity: A shift of attention away from oneself in the present to concerns for future generations.
