Course Description Sophomore English is an opportunity for students to increase their ability to read, write, speak, and listen through a variety of activities including the SixTraits of Writing and Six Traits of Reading, to understand and respond to course materials on the literal and figurative level, to make and support a claim using organization and logic, and to implement grammar and usage skills to accommodate effective communication. Successful completion of this course satisfies one half unit of graduation requirement.
Language Arts Standards: Reading, Writing, Listening & Speaking Performance Standard These statements describe how well students must perform the benchmark standards. The "proficient" level is required to meet the standards. The level descriptors help teachers to judge where students are performing in relation to the standards. A general definition of these levels is provided below. Advanced – Students who perform at the advanced level use their knowledge of language arts in complex and abstract situations and can communicate, argue and articulate information and ideas. Proficient – Students who perform at the proficient level use concepts and skills to acquire and communicate information and ideas using appropriate strategies as required by the standards. Partially proficient – Students who perform at the partially proficient level use rudimentary knowledge and skills to acquire and communicate information and ideas on welldefined tasks with direction.
