Veritas Christo Et Ecclesiae (Part 3 of 3) I appreciate more than I can express some of the advances in medicine, technology, travel, communications, etc. with which we are blessed. At the same time, I appreciate more than I can adequately express “…the faith that was once for all delivered to the saints” (Jude 3, ESV). George Santayana was a philosopher, poet, essayist, and novelist who died in 1952. He described himself as an “aesthetic Catholic” His writings would indicate that his concerns, if any, about the history of Harvard or present discussions among churches of Christ would not at all be the same as mine.

However, among his writings, one will find the following quote. It would serve all of us well to at least keep it in mind.
“Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.” —Jim Faughn jimfaughn.blogspot.com

Have you been to our website lately? Keith LeSuer has done quite a lot of work updating the website, and he continues to keep it up-to-date. If you have pictures of special events, please send them to the church office via email or on disk. We can use these for our 2009 Year in Review video, but we also would like to add some to our website. Finally, a reminder for those who lead in our worship services. Please use the microphones, and please be close to them. Those who “run” the sound system can only raise the volume so far. Please be directly in front of the microphone, and please speak up and clearly. It will greatly help each worshiper hear as we seek to glorify God in our worship.

A Most Deserved Day As flowers are blooming and gardens start to grow, it’s only fitting that we take a day to remember and honor our mothers. In the same way that life is springing up all around us, it is mothers who bring life and vitality to a home. Whether you are a young mother, or one whose children are grown, you, as a mother, are making a great difference in the life of someone. Your influence will carry on through the life of your child. I recently heard a lady talking about some of her memories of motherhood. She said that, as her family was traveling on a long journey, dad started asking

questions about the family: “Who is the cutest?” “Who is the weirdest.” Finally, he asked, “Who is the smartest?” The eight-year-old son yelled from the backseat, “Mom!” The dad, seemingly disappointed, proceeded to agree that mom was smart, but then reminded his son that he had an advanced degree and did all kinds of other things. Finally, the dad asked, “Why do you think mom’s the smartest.”
to the bathroom!” Moms love stories like those, because they know that that same innocence can be molded into a future leader. Moms need to understand the level of influence they have, for good or bad, on a child. So, today, if your mom influenced you for good, thank her. Be grateful that she molded you on the straight and narrow path. If she didn’t, be thankful that God still cares and that you can influence others for good. Thanks, moms, for all you do for good!
In pure, eight-year-old wisdom, the little boy responded, “Because mom’s the only one who knows when I have to go

Hello and happy Mother’s Day!
WHAT IS PRAYER
First, I am happy to transcribe a card from my in-laws to you. Randy and I wanted to send a note to say special thanks for all your kindness, prayer and beautiful cards. It is so amazing the love that has been sent our way since we have found that the breast cancer has spread to my liver and spleen. May God bless each and everyone. –Randy and Tina Kersey
Before I point out what prayer is, let’s notice what prayer is not. Prayer is not a substitute for obeying the gospel of Christ. If you will recall, Paul (Saul of Tarsus) was praying when Ananias said to him: “And now why tarriest thou? Arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins” (Acts 22:16). Prayer is not something that takes the place of diligent study of God’s Word. God has told us to: “Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth” (2 Timothy 2:15). Prayer is not a bell we ring to get us out of trouble. God is not a glorified bell-hop.
We had such a wonderful day last Sunday! After eating lunch, some of the youth went to Sycamores Terrace to participate in a worship service. Austin Nichols preached a good lesson and David Smith did a great job leading singing. Our work, however, was not finished after Sycamores Terrace. We went over to the youth house at about 3 PM and cleaned it up to get ready for Chris LaFever. Chris will be joining us on May 24 for spend the summer as our youth intern.
Prayer is the sincere expression to God of the intense desire of the heart. (Romans 10:1). Prayer is something that is mentioned often in the Scriptures, yet there are many of us who do not understand prayer, who really do not know what it is. We are like the apostles; we need to be taught concerning prayer (Luke 11:1). We don’t need to learn merely how to say the words, but everything about prayer.
After evening worship Sunday, we had a devotional at the Raines home. I thank the Raines family for hosting our devo. I am really proud of the young people and their hard day’s work. They did a great job! Way to go, LYRG! Thank you very much for being you! --JD :)
