Tom Schnoor L. Zimmerman Diversity in education Homework 15 Due Nov 28, '07

I would agree with the “Assessing Children’s Literature” article that we should have books with characters that are not presented in a stereotypical fashion. And settings should be realistic when depicting urban culture and other cultures. Exaggerations of the truth and stereotypes can have a major impact on a child. They can shape a Childs world view. Thinking back to the books I was read books about fairy tales. The had the evil protagonist and the antagonist, which was the prince and normally the wicked witch. I remember a lot of males being the heroes, and the woman were the ones being rescued, or they were very passive. I also remember when ever the stories were illustrated they were white people. When I got into middle school I recall more diverse books about untraditional plot lines. But a high concentration of white protagonists and heroes.
