Background information about Yemen.  Al-Jumhuuriyya Al-Yamaniyya is an arab country located on

the Arabianpenins Southwest Asia.  Yemen has an estimated population of more than 23 million

people.  It is bordered by Saudi Arabia to the North, the Red Sea to the

West, the Arabian Sea an Gulf of Aden to the South ,and Oman to the East.  Yemen size is just under 530,00 km2, and its territory

includes over 200 islands the largest of which is Socotra, about 415 km(259 miles) to the south of Yemen, off the coast of Somalia.

Why Yemen?  Yemen is the poorest nation in the Arab region.  The country’s most pressing development problems –

poverty, water scarcity and population growth.  SANA'A, Yemen, 15 February 2005 - Getting access to

education - even a primary school education – is one of the biggest challenges facing children in Yemen today, especially girls.  They had some impact in all parts of the country, there

were and still are serious inequalities between rural and urban areas and between boys and girls.  The real situation is reflected in statistics issued concerning

illiteracy rates in our country.

The problems which faced the education in Yemen.  The gender gap in education in Yemen is

amongst the highest in the world.
