THE POWER OF ONE Computer Assignment • • • • •

Answer a minimum of eight of the following seventeen questions. You may do them in any order. They must be done on the computer and answered in paragraph format. They should be full answers showing your understanding of the story. Each question is worth 10 marks and the essay, which follows, is worth 40. This will give you a mark out of 100 for this computer assignment. Spelling, punctuation and well written sentences will be part of your mark as well as your understanding of the film text.

QUESTION 1 This film is about power –its misuse and abuse, but also about the power of one person to bring about change. Discuss your understanding of how power is shown in the film. Give examples to support your views. QUESTION 2 “Inclusion, not exclusion is the key to survival.” Discuss this quote from the film and how it is significant in the story. QUESTION 3 Boxing is an important part of the story and yet it is not a film about boxing. How does PK’s boxing weave into the main themes of the film? QUESTION 4 In the film there are many strong positive characters. Choose any three such characters other than PK, and show their part in the story. Explain their strengths and how this advanced the plot. QUESTION 5 There are also several negative characters who misuse their power altering the lives of others. Choose one such character and show how he had a detrimental effect on the lives of others. Be specific by describing actions that altered lives. QUESTION 6 “For one brief moment he was a free man.” Who was PK speaking about when he said this? Describe what happened and how a person could be “free” while he is being bashed. QUESTION 7 Create a time line showing the main events in the film and the changes in PKs life. QUESTION 8 Create a character map with PK in the centre and all the main characters connected to him and each other. Show the role each person played in the story.

QUESTION 9 The concert in the prison was an important event in the story. How did it become more important with time? What was the problem PK had in teaching the tribes the song? What did he mean by: “Tonight, let us be one under the sky” QUESTION 10 The African landscape was an important part of the story. How was this achieved? Discuss the significance of at least one scene where the natural beauty was very important. QUESTION 11 PK was a strong and courageous person in the film. Where did he get his strength and courage from as a boy and as a young man? Discuss specific events. QUESTION 12 How did Marias’ death affect PK? Did she die in vein? What changed PK’s mind about giving up? What did he do? QUESTION 13 World War 11 was important in the film. How did it change PK’s life during the fighting and afterwards. QUESTION 14 Passage of Time There were a couple of occasions when large amounts of time were passed allowing PK to grow up. Find each of these times and explain how it was done simply and how effective it was. QUESTION 15 Describe what PK saw in Alexandra. What were the conditions like for the black people. Why was this? Why couldn’t they better their position and/or move away? QUESTION 16 There are a few references in the film to black magic, spiritual growth and the power of the individual. Do you think they took this too far? Discuss some of these references and show how they are important in the development of the story. QUESTION 17 What was “apartheid”? How did it work and what eventually happened for it to be destroyed? ESSAY Freedom is the central issue in the film “The Power of One”. Plan and write an essay discussing this question and referring to points in the story to explain your position. 40 marks
