On Sunday, November 8th, YouthBridge-NY Fellows engaged in community service projects around New York City. Several of our volunteers went to Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn with Habitat for Humanity-New York City and helped construct a new apartment building by measuring, cutting, and drilling sheetrock. Fellows had the opportunity to work alongside a mother and her son who plan on moving in after its completion. Another group of Fellows volunteered with 92nd Street Y’s annual Teensgiving by cleaning up in Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx. Fellows interacted with other teens while helping the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation. Both events were a tremendous success and future volunteering opportunities are in the works, including another Habitat build in the Spring and the AIDS Walk in 2009.

Herman Mendoza’s Journey of Navigating Through Conflict
Minister Herman Mendoza speaking to the YouthBridge-NY Fellows
On M ond ay, Oct ob er 27th, YouthBridge-NY Fellows met with Minister Herman Mendoza at the Allianz headquarters in New York. Herman founded Stepping Stone Ministries and works to rehabilitate prisoners back into society. He shared his moving life story of how he was arrested and incarcerated for narcotics several times over a 15-year period and then decided to turn his life around. He left Fellows with the
meaningful message that it is never too late to change for the good. Minister Mendoza also brought in his son, who gave his perspective on the events that occurred to his father. Overall, it was a very fascinating meeting. Minister Mendoza was a perfect example of someone who learned how to navigate through conflict.

Committee Updates Last meeting, the Shared Resources for a Shared Future Committee welcomed their previous grantees from two years ago: Reflect Connect Move, and Young Culinary Masters, to whom they had given $2000 each in mini grants. They held a casual and relaxed conversation with the guests about the receiving end of the grant-making process. They provided the Fellows with a view of how best to work with organizations when giving grants and how the financial crisis is impacting different non-profit organizations. The committee hopes to implement their advice. The Social Marketing and Media Committee, the newest addition to YouthBridge-NY, created their first Public Service Announcement with some help from the Manhattan Neighborhood Network. In

Fellow Spotlight: Ravi Seujattan Ravi Seujattan has been a truly exceptional Fellow. Ravi emigrated from Trinidad and Tobago when he was three; his parents were destined for the American dream. Being raised in Queens, New York, an extremely diverse city, Ravi believes that anything is possible once you put your mind to it. Ravi is currently a senior at the High School for Environmental Studies and a dedicated YouthBridge-NY Fellow and Intern. Ravi has shown outstanding leadership skills by organizing school-wide events, along with being very involved in student government. He was elected Student Government's Secretary of Student Affairs in his junior year, and has shown dependability

and integrity while carrying out this position. Ravi has developed a good rapport with the administration, lunchroom personnel, security and other High School for Environmental Studies staff. In addition, he has been thorough and imaginative in initiating and executing projects in Leadership class, such as a student newsletter, among other things. Ravi has also been a key organizer in the production of school musicals. Along with being very active in school, Ravi is also very involved with YouthBridge-NY. He, along with other Fellows, had opportunities over the past years to meet with Mayor Bloomberg and other political leaders in New York City. Ravi was an Engaging Workplace Diversity Intern for the New York Community Media Alliance in the summer of 2008. He is currently a member of the Social Marketing and Media Committee. Ravi has shown a strong dedica-
