Significance What is meant Biblically by "world" or "whole world" is of significant interest to The Calvinist/Arminian Debate. Both inconsistent- and consistent universalists (that is Arminians and Pelagians), assume a universal scope to Christ's Atonement, based upon references to "the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world" (Jn. 1v29), "God so loved the world" (Jn. 3v16), "that the world through Him might be saved" (Jn. 3v17), "Christ, reconciling the world unto Himself" (2 Cor. 5v19), and "for the sins of the whole world" (1 Jn. 2v2).

Questions for Arminians If our Arminian friends, WISH TO INSIST UPON A UNIVERSALIST INTERPRETATION OF BIBLICAL PASSAGES REFERRING TO THE "WORLD", then how would they have us understand the following? Did Caesar Augustus tax the whole world? We read in Luke chapter 2 verse 1; "And it came to pass in those days, THAT THERE WENT OUT A DECREE FROM CAESAR AUGUSTUS THAT ALL THE WORLD SHOULD BE TAXED." (Lk. 2v1, AKJV, p.450) The earliest taxes in Rome were customs duties on imports and exports called "portoria". [1] Caesar Augustus was consider by many to be the most brilliant tax strategist of the Roman Empire. During his reign as "First Citizen" the publicani were virtually eliminated as tax collectors for the central government. During this period cities were given the responsibility for tax collecting. Amongst other things, Caesar Augustus instituted an inheritance tax, to provide retirement funds for the military. The tax was 5 percent on all inheritances except gifts to children and spouses. Centuries later, the English and Dutch would refer to the inheritance tax of Augustus in developing their own inheritance taxes. During the time of Julius Caesar a 1 percent sales tax was imposed. During the time of Caesar Augustus the sales tax was 4 percent for slaves and 1 percent for everything else. [1] Saint Matthew was a publican or tax collector (Mt. 10v3) from Capernaum during Caesar Augustus reign. He was not of the old publicani, but hired by the local government to collect taxes. In 60 A.D. Boadicea, queen of East Anglia, led a revolt attributed to corrupt tax collectors in the British Isles. Her revolt raised an army of 230,000 - allegedly killing every Roman soldiers within 100 miles and seizing London. It

is said that over 80,000 people were killed during the revolt. The revolt was crushed by Emperor Nero and resulted in the appointment of new administrators for the British Isles. [1] No matter how powerful, or how developed the taxation strategies of Augustus - the taxable Roman Empire (i.e. "all the world") only extended to sections of what we today know as Albania, Algeria, Armenia, Austria, Belgium, Bosnia, Cyprus, Egypt, England, France, Greece, Iraq, Israel, Italy, Libya, Macedonia, Montenegro, Morocco, Romania, Slovenia, Spain, Syria, Tunisia and Turkey. [2] Did the whole world follow Jesus? We read in John chapter 12 verse 19; "The Pharisees therefore said among themselves, Perceive ye how ye prevail nothing? BEHOLD, THE WORLD IS GONE AFTER HIM." (Jn. 12v19, AKJV, p.475)

Scripture References "And it came to pass in those days, THAT THERE WENT OUT A DECREE FROM CAESAR AUGUSTUS THAT ALL THE WORLD SHOULD BE TAXED." (Lk. 2v1, AKJV, p.450) "The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto Him, and saith, BEHOLD THE LAMB OF GOD, WHICH TAKETH AWAY THE SIN OF THE WORLD." (Jn. 1v29, AKJV, p.467) "{15} That whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have eternal life. {16} For GOD SO LOVED THE WORLD, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have eternal life. {17} For GOD SENT NOT HIS SON INTO THE WORLD TO CONDEMN THE WORLD; BUT THAT THE WORLD THROUGH HIM MIGHT BE SAVED." (Jn. 3v15, 16, 17, AKJV, p.468) "The Pharisees therefore said among themselves, Perceive ye how ye prevail nothing? BEHOLD, THE WORLD IS GONE AFTER HIM." (Jn. 12v19, AKJV, p.475)

"First, I thank my God through Jesus Christ for you all, THAT YOUR FAITH IS SPOKEN OF THROUGHOUT THE WHOLE WORLD." (Rom. 1v8, AKJV, p.498)

"{14} For the love of Christ constraineth us; because we thus judge, that IF ONE DIED FOR ALL, THEN WERE ALL DEAD: {15} AND THAT HE DIED FOR ALL, THAT THEY WHICH LIVE SHOULD NOT HENCEFORTH LIVE UNTO THEMSELVES, BUT UNTO HIM WHICH DIED FOR THEM, and rose again. {16} Wherefore henceforth know we no man after the flesh: yea, though we have known Christ after the flesh, yet now henceforth know we Him no more. {17} Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new. {18} And all things are of God, WHO HAVE RECONCILED US TO HIMSELF BY JESUS CHRIST, and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation; {19} To wit, that God was in Christ, RECONCILING THE WORLD UNTO HIMSELF, NOT IMPUTING THEIR TRESPASSES UNTO THEM; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation. {20} Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech you by us: we pray you in

Christ's stead, be ye reconciled to God. {21} For HE HATH MADE HIM TO BE SIN FOR US, WHO KNEW NO SIN; THAT WE MIGHT BE MADE THE RIGHTEOUSNESS OF GOD IN HIM." (2 Cor. 5v14-21, AKJV, p.513) "And HE IS THE PROPITIATION FOR OUR SINS: AND NOT FOR OURS ONLY, BUT ALSO FOR THE SINS OF THE WHOLE WORLD." (1 Jn. 2v2, AKJV, p.541)
