The Wolverine Track Volume 32, no. 5

November 16, 2009 Wellington PTA 6.10.43

President’s Message... Kids, Movies, Bond and Levies — What Do They Have in Common? As I’m writing this and look at the calendar, it is hard to believe that we are already in November. It seems like our kids just started back to school and PTA held our annual Kickoff. Now we have celebrated Halloween, have results from the November 3rd election, and held our PTA Reflections Gallery night. Students are settled in and working hard in each of their classrooms, and Thanksgiving will be here before we know it. So what’s next? Our school board will be putting three propositions on the election ballot for district residents to vote on February 9, 2010. To help parents better understand what the bond and levies will do, PTA will host an information night on January 22nd, 2010 to present information and answer questions about the bond, four-year Renewal Education Operation Support (M&O) Levy and a four-year Renewal School Technology Levy. I realize this doesn’t sound like the most exciting way to spend an evening, so PTA will also be hosting a free family movie night that same night, where kids get to come and play games in the gym while parents learn about the bond and levies (a short ½ hour meeting) and then parents will be able to join their kids for a movie and popcorn afterwards. Our PTA would love to say that we came up with the movie night idea, but thanks to four third grade boys who took the time to write a letter to our PTA and ask if we could have a family night, along with ideas on how to pay for it and willingness to help, we couldn’t say no. Since we know that parent’s time is limited, we decided to combine the two events. Please mark your calendar for the combined family movie night/bond – levy information night. Thanks, Brendan, Chace, Nathan, and Joe for your great idea and we look forward to your help!

We’re only two months into the school year and your PTA dollars are already hard at work enhancing the educational experience for all Wellington students: The next time you’re in the library, check out the new rounder which holds paperback books. No more searching for the perfect book behind all the others or tearing up the books trying to squeeze more in the small wire shelves. This rounder is fantastic and it was paid for with your PTA dollars. The CD player used daily in the P.E. classes and team time decided to quit right at the beginning of the school year. The PTA was able to step in and replace it quickly, so the students wouldn’t miss any of the musical fun during their classes. If you have a 4th – 6th grader, they may have mentioned the new recess option program located in Mr. Zehm’s room during lunch recess. Along with all the generously donated games, the PTA was able to provide $300 to stock the room with great Lego sets and other manipulatives. What a wonderful option for our students during the cold and rainy days! Watch the Wolverine Track in the coming weeks for more exciting examples of your PTA dollars at work!

Have a sick child? Running late? Thank you to all parents who are doing a great job of calling in to our 24-hour line. As you might imagine, there have been a record number of sick kids this fall, and your messages help us account for each child each and every day. Keep calling!! In an attempt to make your life easier, the PTA has provided refrigerator magnets for all Wellington families. We introduced them to the community last year, and recently sent magnets home to all new families. If you didn’t receive one in your Monday envelope, or you’ve lost your magnet from last year, please contact Ann Bhat at [email protected] who will make arrangements to send a magnet home to you via your student.
