Keanna Reyes AMH 2020.5 November 12, 2009 Week 12 Questions 1) The Bonus Army traveled to Washington demanding to receive their $1,000 bonuses immediately. What was the reaction in Washington to this group and how did it affect Hoover’s presidency? The House of Representatives were willing to meet the demands of the Bonus Army but the Senate was reluctant and turned them down. However, the Army refused to move until their demands were met so federal troops led by Army Chief of Staff Douglas MacArthur entered by force into the veterans camps and set them on fire. This resulted in the death of an infant and wounding of more than 100 veterans. This incident further ingrained anti Hoover sentiments and played a role in him not being re-elected. 2) The National Security Act of 1947 established some of the most crucial governmental departments that still exist today. What were they and how did it help give the American people better piece of mind? The departments established by the National Security Act of 1947 were the Department of Defense, the CIA, The FBI and the Pentagon. Being caught in an era full of fear and panic about national security these extensions of the government helped bring assurance to those that believed too much power being held in the executive branch could be detrimental to the country’s future. 3) After World War II the American dream took a great shift. What was this shift and did it truly apply to the vast majority of the population? The American dream originally embraced the four freedoms, which are freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom from want and freedom from fear. However after the war the American dream became more related to becoming prosperous. This new dream proved deceitful for many not only because prosperity can’t be reached by all, but in part because of the constant fear that American way of life was under threat.
