INTRODUCTION WIRELESS MODEM • is a type of modem which connects to a wireless network instead of to the telephone system. When you connect with a wireless modem, you are attached directly to your wireless ISP (Internet Service Provider) and you can then access the Internet.
TYPES OF DEVICE USED Mobile phones, smartphones, and PDAs can be employed as data modems to form a wireless access point connecting a personal computer to the Internet. In this use the mobile phone is providing a gateway between the cellular service provider's data network technology and Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP) spoken by PCs. Wireless FireWire, USB and Serial modems are also used in the Wi-Fi and WiMAX standards, operating at microwave frequencies, to give a laptop, PDA or desktop computer an access point to a network. The modems may be as large as a regular cable modem to as small as a WiFi dongle/USB-stick. ExpressCard and Compact Flash modems are also used.
SERVICES PROVIDER Some of these Cellular networks and the carrier's service plans are : 1) North America - Canada providers list of Canadian phone companies. - United States providers of T mobile, AT & T mobility, Virezon wireless 2) Europe - United Kingdom providers of Vodafone- Mobile -Spanish -Belgium 3) Asia -Indian provider Virgin India Mobile -Indonesia providers of Indosat,Telkomsel and Axis -China provider China Mobile 4) Oceania - Australia providers of Telstra,Optus,3 Mobile,Vodafone

HOW IT WORKS • The sending modem modulates the data into a signal that is compatible with the phone line, and the receiving modem demodulates the signal back into digital data. Wireless modems convert digital data into radio signals and back. • Allow terminals to connect to computers over the phone lines. A typical arrangement is shown below:
Novatel Wireless Ovation MC950D USB HSPA Modem
The Ovation MC950D is a 3G modem based on the latest HSUPA, HSDPA, and UMTS technologies. HSUPA stands for High-Speed Uplink Packet Access, HSDPA stands for High-Speed Downlink Packet Access, and UMTS represents Universal Mobile Telecommunications System technology. These are key technologies of 3G, which offers the most cutting-edge high performance data access speeds. The world’s smallest pocket wireless modems and innovative design. Software is included on the device which means that users can connect to the internet without the need to install drivers from a CD. The modem supports up to 7.2mbps downlink data access speeds and 2.1mbps uplink.
The modem was acquired through Vodafone so it sports the “Vodafone” logo instead of Novatel Wireless. The red SIM card is also from Vodafone.

PERFORMANCE This modem does not bring you the Internet “for free” you need to sign up with a carrier for a plan or account in your area, and then you receive an UMTS HSUPA/HSDPA compatible SIM card. The modem is marked with useful arrows and a little SIM card is sketched on its back, so basically, you can not insert it the wrong way.
HOW IT WORK We plug it into our test system, which runs Windows XP. The device is automatically detected and the wizard pops up and leads you through the setup process. The drivers are installed without any assistance from the user. Then we have a customized Vodafone operator-based “control panel”-like menu that allows us to monitor the status of our connection, data speeds, signal strength, overall statistics, and so forth. The device scanned through all of the possible networks, and in less than 30 seconds, we were already online. The small indicator LED on the Ovation MC950D turned yellow, since that’s the color representing HSDPA; green is for GPRS and blue is for HSUPA.
