o other color is as distinctive to New England as cranberry. Rich rubies, glittering in the chill sunshine of the autumn fen, burst with the promise of crisp juice, warm muffins and tart relishes, just to name a few. The perfect place to explore all these delicious possibilities is at the Annual Cranberry Harvest Celebration in Wareham on October 11 and 12th.

“Two Days for a Little Berry” occurs Columbus Day weekend, arranged by the Cranberry Grower’s Association, a voluntary membership for the Massachusetts growers in collaboration with A.D. Makepeace, the largest cranberry grower in the state. “We invite the public to witness the ‘crimson harvest’” explains Dawn Gates-Allen, Communications Manager, herself a fourth generation grower. ”It’s one of the most unique crops; the red berries floating on blue water; with the fall foliage, the crisp air. There are so many vivid pictorial images, it’s really fun when taking pictures, like when rainbows are created by the sprinklers. If you get the sun

positioned just right, the pond is so still, you can get a mirror effect of reflections so much so that you can’t tell which way to hold the picture.” You can watch the cranberries being harvested over the weekend on half hour bus tours, looping around the A.D. Makepeace property, extending for over 2,000 acres. On board are narrators, many growers themselves, explaining the various methods and available for questions. One of the most common misconceptions they clear up is that the berries grow in the water, when actually they are on vines beneath. In the winter, often around Christmas, the bogs are flooded to protect the plants from frozen roots and wind burned leaves. By the first of March, the water is lowered for the growing season. In the fall, the flumes are opened again so the “egg beater” machines can knock the berries loose for scooping. A natural waxy coating allows them to float, resulting in perhaps the most photogenic crop on the planet. Cranberry bogs are ecofriendly wetlands, with careful water and bug management, so peaceful that deer, turkeys, and swans flock to their beauty and often the nearby ponds

that feed the bogs are lush with fish. The festival attractions for humans, over 10,000 people attended the event last year, are many and varied with hay wagon and pony rides, games and crafts for children such as pumpkin painting, booths of crafters and artisans, exhibitors and musical performances that entire families can enjoy. The scenery can also be viewed by helicopter. New this year are cranberry-themed cooking demonstrations in participation with Johnson & Wales students. Located off the Cranberry Highway in Wareham, the event is 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, rain or shine. Admission is $2, with children under 6 free, at the A.D. Makepeace Company Headquarters at Tihonet Village, 158 Tihonet Road in Wareham, MA Questions may be directed to the Cape Cod Cranberry Growers’ Association, 508-759-1041, or http://www.cranberXV ries.org/festival/festival.html.

wo bottles of wine stand on a sales counter at Newport Vineyards. One, a 2007 Riesling, was awarded Best of Show, in addition to best Riesling, at July’s Fourth Annual Atlantic Seaboard Wine Competition, in Virginia. The event included 458 wine entries from 100 wineries in 12 states. The second bottle of wine, 2007 Tranquility, won for best White Vinifera Blend. “To take Best of Show out of 458 entries is a milestone achievement for Rhode Island wines,” says George Chelf, winemaker for Newport Vineyards. Newport Vineyards has grown to 60 vineyard acres since the original grape plantings in the late 1970s and consists of three sites in close proximity—Nunes Farm, located on a historic 1701 property that was purchased by Francisco Nunes in 1917; Perry Farm, acquired in 1998 through a land trust partnership with Rhode Island that protects it from development; and the 10-acre Hopelands Estate, with the Vineyard’s oldest vines. Preserving farm land from rapid devel-

opment is a key goal of Newport Vineyards, now run by John and Paul Nunes, great grandsons of Francisco. Driving a few miles north from Newport, or about 20 minutes south from I-195 in Fall River, motorists are struck by the breezy green beauty of Aquidneck Island’s farms, polo elds, and small shops, all about two miles from the ocean and nearby bays. The region’s long cool growing season and rich soil is ideal for developing complex avors in wine. The Vineyard is a recognized landmark attraction in Newport County, an award winning cutting edge business, and a retail destination. A 1,000-sq.ft. shop features wine accessories, clothing and gourmet foods.

“We’ve got it covered” Guided tours begin in the elds with a talk about climate and vineyard practices so visitors understand how and why grapes grow in this region. Visitors then get a behind the scenes view of the winemaker and his state-of-the-art Italian bottling and labeling machine, stainless steel tanks, and French and American oak barrels. Public tours at 1 and 3 p.m. end with a wine sampling. Private tours are available year round for groups of 10 or more by appointment. The winery hosts small weddings, rehearsal dinners, corporate groups and other private events, and a two-acre vineyard meadow site accomodates outdoor wedding ceremonies of up to 200 people. An in-house designer can create personalized bottle labels whatever the event. Newport Vineyards is located at 909 East Main Road (Rt. 138), Middletown, RI. Play Power exhibit celebrates the importance of play by Marsha Zeitz

C

hild’s play isn’t just about having fun. It’s a powerful learning tool that is important to children’s cognitive, physical and social development and their sense of emotional well being. Play Power, a major new handson exhibit that will debut on October 28th at the Providence Children’s Museum in Providence RI, is an innovative, vibrant learning environment that will celebrate the importance and power of spontaneous, child directed play. “Play is important to children’s development. They often don’t have enough time or space for it. The Play Power exhibit was developed in response to this issue. It gives children an opportunity to explore different phenomena through a number of creative exhibit components,” says Megan Fischer, Marketing and Public Relations Director for the museum. In the Play Power exhibit children will be encouraged to explore their worlds as they investigate cause and effect with sound, motion, magnets, air and light and construct contraptions to send balls rolling down ramps and through mazes. They are invited to stretch their imagination by creating original musical compositions at an inventive sound structure and to transform an intriguing domed play space with interlocking geometric blocks and tubes. The museum also offers a variety of other exhibits and learning activities for ages one through eleven. “Various exhibits cater to various ages, but there is something in every exhibit for every age group,” says Ms. Fischer.

In “Waterways” children build fountains, float boats and explore the swirling, whirling ways of water. “Hey Look!” provides fun house mirrors, a walk in a kaleidoscope and a sparkling hall of mirrors that illustrates optical illusion. The “Bone Zone” encourages children to take a bike ride with a grinning skeleton, explore deep inside a bone and watch faces “morph” into a skull. “Shape Space” invites the exploration of height, length and width. Youngsters create patterns and build shapes with blocks, puzzles and geometrics as they investigate two and three dimensional effects. Children construct bridges, redesign cities and investigate roadways in “Iway”. And, in “Coming to Rhode Island” they meet history: a fascinating exhibit about the people from four different countries who have settled in the Rhode Island area. They visit an English colonist’s farm, a Latino bodega in the 1960’s, a replica of a packet ship that brought settlers from the Cape Verde Islands and a 19th century textile mill that was the work place of many French Canadians. The museum will be closed from September 2nd to October 27th to fa-

cilitate the installation of the Play Power Exhibit and accommodate museum renovations. It reopens on October 28th. The Play Power will be an ongoing exhibit. Admission: $7.50 per person. Children under 12 months are free. Group visits and rates are available for groups of ten or more children on weekdays only. Reopening October 27 through March on Tuesday through Sunday and seven days a week from April through Labor Day: 9 a.m to 6 p.m. Open during school vacations, Monday holidays and on select Friday evenings until 8 p.m. The Providence Children’s Museum is located at 100 South Street, Providence RI. Throughout its 62-year history as a non-profit community theatre, Your Theatre has maintained its original goal of excellence envisioned by the company’s founder Mary A. Smith in 1946. Although it has been housed in various locations, Your Theatre has continued to exhibit what Smith termed “the highest concept of theatre.” According to Ed Maguire, Your Theatre’s Artistic Director for the past fifty years, the company still endeavors to deliver the best community theatre to both old and new audiences. “We have a loyal core,” says Maguire, “but too many people haven’t heard about us.” According to Maguire, YTI attempts to “do things people haven’t had the opportunity to see.” And, he adds, “We are the best.” As the starting place for actors like New Bedford’s Bobby Amaral who

toured with The Lion King and is currently in the lead role of The Producers, YTI takes its work seriously. Acting workshops, a scholarship fund, and stage reading opportunities for aspiring playwrights are also offered by Your Theatre. The first production of the fall season, Philamon, was a rarely produced musical set in ancient Rome written by Harvey Schmidt and Tom Jones of Fantasticks fame. Next, is Under Milk Wood by Dylan Thomas, from October 16-19 which promises audiences a genuinely unique opportunity For YTI’s performance of Under Milk Wood, the stage will be set up as a radio studio with actors reading the script as if they were being broadcast over the airwaves. Under Milk Wood, was originally performed in New York in 1953 with Dylan Thomas in the First Voice role. Richard Burton took on the First Voice role one year later (after Thomas’s death) in the BBC radio performance of the play. The First Voice is an all knowing narrator who both offers a backdrop

and introduces a mad cast of eccentric characters who live in a small seaside village in Wales. In both its bawdy humor and blatant doses of reality, Under Milk Wood invites the audience to consider what lies beneath the surface in our own communities and our own lives. Upcoming Your Theatre performances to look forward to are Round and Round the Garden, a comedy filled with glorious mishaps, misunderstandings and mayhem November 1222 and The Christmas Quarter, Dec 12-14, a delightful holiday play for old and young alike. The Three Sisters, Anton Chekhov’s warm, touching yet humorous family saga will be performed Januarty 14-24, 2009. All seats at Your Theatre are reserved and ticket prices are from $12 to $15. For more information call 508- 9930772 or email [email protected]. For a full schedule of performances consult www.yourtheatre.org. XV

he art of native son Brian Fox will be on display throughout the months of September and October at the Narrows Gallery in the Narrows Center for the Arts. The lifelong Somerset resident graduated in 1990 from the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth with a bachelor’s degree in fine arts, working as a freelance artist for the past 17 years. Fox is known for his sports and celebrity portraits, who worked last summer with Major League Baseball-licensed Upper Class Collectibles. At the 2007 MLB All-Star Game in San Francisco, Fox crafted two original 4-foot by 5-foot paintings featuring the National and American League All-Star teams. Those portraits became a hit at the game, and MLB hired him to craft another live portrait of the Red Sox after their come-from-behind ALCS series win against the Cleveland Indians. The portrait featured a collage of Red Sox sluggers Ortiz and Manny Ramirez and ace pitcher Josh Beckett looking over Fenway Park. Although Fox’s passion tends to center around sports and music, painting such icons as Ray Charles, Keith Richards, Johnny Depp, Tom Brady, Curt Schilling and former Soprano’s star James Gandolfini, his abil-

ity goes far beyond that. Brian’s impeccable draftsmanship, attention to detail and uncanny ability to capture the look of his subjects keep his art in high demand, said Narrows President Patrick Norton. “Having an artist of Brian’s stature return to the Narrows is a real honor,” said Norton. “It’s amazing what he has accomplished in such a short period of time.”

For Fox, whose art has been featured at a number of high-profile celebrity charity events, with proceeds going to such places as the Jimmy Fund, the feeling was mutual. “I have always enjoyed the Narrows and its gallery space,” said Fox. “I am very excited to be asked to show there again.” His art is also currently being spotlighted in Los Angeles on Sunset Strip at a gallery called Mr. Musichead and Morrison Hotel and a recent gallery show at “Pop International” in Soho, New York. Asked what he hopes people gain from his art, Fox said he always hopes to capture the spirit of his subjects and that the spirit comes through with each viewer. The Art of Brian Fox will be on display from Sept 3-Oct. 31, Wednesday to Saturday, noon to 5 p.m. and by appointment. Gallery admission is free during gallery hours and concert ticketholders are welcome to view the exhibition on performance night. The Narrows Center for the Arts, located at the top floor of a former textile mill, is divided into four areas including the Narrows Gallery, the Performance Area, the Narrows Café and the Resident Artist Studios.
