What if Protists Disappeared? One Pager “Life would not long remain possible in the absence of microbes.”—Louis Pasteur Is Pasteur correct? Microbes include a very diverse assortment of microorganisms. Protists are single or multi-celled eukaryotic microorganisms. What would happen if all of the protists on Earth suddenly disappeared? They are small, but does that mean they are not important? For this project, you will research one type of protists. While researching, you need to pay attention to the type of sources you are getting information from. Reputable sources are unbiased, up to date, and from credible organizations. Possible Research Topics: -Plasmodium (Protists associated with Malaria) -Trypanosoma brucei gambiense (African Sleeping Sickness) -Bioluminescent dinoflagellates -Phytoplankton and Dinoflagellates that cause Red Tide or Harmful Algal Blooms -Algal Biofuel -Carrageenan in foods
-Seaweed as a food -Organisms that depend on protists as food -Organisms that have a symbiotic relationship with protists -Protist in Cow Rumen -Phytophthora infestans (Irish Potato Famine) -Diatomites and toothpaste
After deciding on a topic, you will sum up what you learn through research by completing a One-Pager. Your One-Pager should answer the question, “What if [your chosen protist] disappeared?” You will need to create a colorful visual display on one sheet of paper. What to include in your one pager: -Name of the protist -Picture of the protist -Special features of the protist (ex. Flagella to move or an eyespot) -Effects of the protist (on the environment, industry, the economy, humans, culture) -Why the protist is important/impactful
