Side Effects Nausea, vomiting, anorexia, abdominal cramps, diarrhea, flatulence, distention, belching
Monitor glucose levels in diabetic patients Monitor blood urine, electrolytes if used often with patient; may cause diarrhea, hypokalemia, hypernatremia; check I/O ration to identify fluid loss Assess cramping, rectal bleeding, nausea, vomiting; if these symptoms occur, drug should be discontinued; identify cause of constipation; identify whether bulk, fluid, or exercise is missing in the diet Monitor blood ammonia levels; monitor clearing of confusion, lethargy, restlessness, irritability (hepatic encephalopathy); may decrease ammonia level by 50%.
