Week Two Homework Darshil Shah 1. Australia is a fairly socially just country. However, if one thinks about it, nothing can be socially just, because it is impossible to cater different social justice in relation to the whole population. But, Australia is trying the hardest in my opinion, but not because we have had a history with fighting for rights (i.e. Women and Aboriginals) but because Australia needs to progress as a socially just country in order to maintain its multiculturism. 2. Indigenous Australians were never treated like any other human. From the day the British arrived, the aborigines were ignored and their stone age-like lifestyle was seen to the Europeans as something to improve. When the aboriginals did not co-operate, they forced them to change their culture and traditions. They weren’t taken seriously just until the past few decades. In the past few years, their conditions have been decorating and the Australian government, whether it wanted to or not, had to take after them, because the public now believes everyone should be equal and should not be treated as an outsider (thanks to our multiculturalism). In a way, the government gets criticised in two ways, a) people say not enough is done and b) too much is done from them and their dependence must be broken in order for them to recover. To fulfil the idea of social justice, they have to “pay back” what they took from there (i.e. stolen generations). The Australian government is only doing this to keep In demand of the publics view of social justice, but for the people who believe its too much, the government doesn’t have much to lose. 3. Left Wing: terms that refer to the segment of the political spectrum typically associated with any of several strains of socialism, social democracy, or liberalism Income redistribution: Income redistribution or redistribution of wealth is a political policy usually promoted by members of the political left, and opposed by members of the political right. Egalitarian: Full political and social equality for all. Right Wing: opposition to left-win politics Free market: One in which any individual may exchange their products or services by competitive bidding, open to all, without constraint. Human rights: a right or rights (for instance to freedom of speech, freedom of movement, certain standards of life or treatment) which are believed to belong to every person and individual. Welfare safety net: -
