week 3 the novel is moving in a direction which is far differnt from that which was originally envisioned. i am no longer writing a simple thriller about missing uranium. i have decided to write about werner heisenberg. the germans should have developed the atomic bomb before the americans. at the start of the war all of the leading atomic scientists and all of the infrastructure was in germany, norway and denmark. the story i am constructing will suggest that heisenberg did not leave germany in spite of the difficulties he faced because of his friendship with einstein and other jews. he was not a jew but was labeled as having a "jewish style" and attacked for promoting "jewish physics". he played a skillful game of being a nazi sympathiser and ultimately became head of the nazi nuclear weapons development program. he deliberately mislead both germany and the rest of the world with false calculations. he deliberately destoryed his friendship with bohr and other scientists and made himself appear to be faithful to the nazis. he tipped off the allies so that they could blow up the heavy water plant in norway and after the plant was rebuilt he again tipped them off so that the ferry which was carrying the precious cargo could be sunk. he was instrumental in saving bohr and other scientests. he failled to promote the nuclear program and was granted a ridiculoulsy low budget. and in the after math when german scientists were captured by alsos he continued to play the doddering fool in order to retain his position.
