Clouds, Weather, and the Atmosphere 

What is the atmosphere?



The atmosphere is the air that surrounds the earth.



The atmosphere reaches from the earth’s surface to the edge of space.



Can anyone name the layers starting from the one that is closest to the earth’s surface?



Troposphere, Stratosphere, Mesosphere, and Thermosphere



Temperature changes in the layers mark the boundaries of the four main layers of the atmosphere.

Weather and Clouds 

Which layer of the atmosphere contains living things?



The troposphere is where most weather occurs.



What do you think of when I say weather?



Weather is simply what the lower atmosphere, or troposphere, is like at any given place and time.



Can you judge what the weather will be like by looking at the clouds?



The four clouds that we will put on our wall is Stratus, Cumulus, Cirrus, and Cumulonimbus.

Clouds and The Water Cycle 

If you look out the window and see a Cumulonimbus cloud, what type of weather would you expect?



Can you name different types of precipitation?



When precipitation reaches Earth’s surface, it does not just disappear, it evaporates.



Earth’s water moves from place to place through the processes of evaporation, condensation and precipitation. Condensation and precipitation take water out of the Earth’s atmosphere. Evaporation puts water back into the atmosphere. This process is called the water cycle.



The water cycle is the continuous movement of water between Earth’s surface and the air, changing from liquid to gas to liquid.
