we exist to make our clients more successful. Communication comes in many guises. At Precedent, we have over 18 years of experience specialising in research, strategy, design, usability and technology. Whatever the project, we investigate, discover and uncover as much as we can about your organisation, and the people you’re trying to reach. Then we work to find the best ways to express your organisation more clearly, powerfully and personally. We can help you with everything from strategy through to delivery, depending on what you need. But we never follow a brief blindly. Whatever the job at hand, however major or minor, we always start with strategic thinking. And if we think a different medium, message or approach will work better, we’ll talk to you about it.

strategy What we do

Case study

Strategy begins with listening. By getting to know the people inside your organisation and those you need to talk to in your target market, we can help your organisation succeed.

We worked with the Department for Culture, Media and Sport to develop a strategy that spanned all its digital communication with staff, partners, central government and the public.

We help our clients lay the foundations for successful – and measurable – online communications, to define robust and findable information architectures and provide expert independent advice on technology strategy. Whatever the task, we work with you to define not just the strategy, but how you’ll deliver it. From editorial planning to technical infrastructure, we support you with practical, realistic plans.

We recommended the creation of a layered portal that provided all the information a user needed, personalised by audience type. Informed by workshops interviews with staff and partners and an in-depth usability review, our strategy was supported with detailed information architectures, content planning and site concepts. We provided practical steps to implementation as well as assessing the benefits for the Department and defining meaningful measures of success.

Our approach, including focus groups, workshops, competitor research, interviews and audience profiling, is tailored to meet your specific needs and put the user experience right at the centre. reports & reviews What we do Where do you sit in your competitive landscape? How well does your website reflect your brand and values, support your proposition to your target audiences and differentiate you as an organisation? And critically, does it work? These are just some of the questions that need to be answered ahead of the development of any new website, or online communications strategy. We have been publishing benchmark reports on industry sectors for years, most famously into the FTSE 100 companies’ corporate websites and key government websites.

As a result, we developed a review and audit process that can be tailored to answer the questions that you need answered, as well as providing strategically aligned recommendations that support your website objectives. Case study We have been working with Yell Group since 2004 when they first featured in our FTSE 100 report. Yell comes to us regularly for independent assessments of their website and their plans for it. This work ranges from whole site reviews looking at accessibility, usability, brand effectiveness and competitive positioning, to providing advice on, and refinements to, concept designs and re-structuring proposals. Our work has facilitated the continual refinement of the Yell Group website, and provided the business case for a number of online projects. “Precedent help us tick all the right boxes by providing the most useful reports and recommendations which support benchmark best practice for corporate websites. It’s more than a sanity check, they really do add value with innovative suggestions.” Ian Moulsley – Senior Online Communications Manager, Yell

The strategic consultancy process is driven by identifying objectives and ROI at each point in your campaign, and measuring success against these using detailed analytics explained simply.

University of Southampton, one of the top ten research universities in the UK, asked us to collaborate with them to create and align their digital marketing decision making process with their new brand architecture framework we were delivering.

Whatever stage you’re at, we can help. Whether you are new to digital marketing or already have a strategy but need help with implementation, we will deliver.

The result was a concise framework which outlined digital marketing activities, technology and communications channels within the context of the brand’s different facets.

The process involved briefing meetings with key stakeholders and senior management within the university and the work was done in parallel with the brand development project undertaken by our brand team. “The work Precedent undertook on our digital marketing exceeded all expectations, and the service provided was more than value for money. Not only are Precedent an open and human agency, but they are realistic with a strong ability to show good ROI and technical knowledge. Their integration of communications is excellent, especially their different approach to looking and thinking about things. We would be happy to recommend Precedent without hesitation.” University of Southampton

websites What we do Great websites are about much more than just pretty pictures. It’s the combination of creativity, usability and purpose that creates a great user experience. We blend consultancy, design and development – from initial strategy and planning through design and editorial planning to content management and website hosting. We’re strategy-led. That means we focus on delivering tangible return on investment for you, and are passionate about creativity and user experience. We’re technology agnostic. With experience in leading open source, bespoke and enterprise content management systems, we can find the right tool for you (and your budget) and deliver it. We know a website launch is a beginning rather than an end. We work with clients for the long term, delivering great content and ongoing strategic support. Case study Newmarket Racecourse offers the best flat racing in the world and with its history and tradition it can lay claim to be ‘the home of racing’. However, Newmarket’s old website didn’t do justice to this positioning or to promote the many events and facilities on offer.

Our redesign put the emphasis firmly on high-quality imagery that showcases the beauty of Newmarket and its history, from the time of Charles II to the present day. Supported by a flexible information architecture, we gave Newmarket the flexibility to respond to the racing seasons and to its marketing strategy, promoting contextual events and sponsorships throughout the site. Who we’ve done it for We work with clients on everything from micro-sites to large scale portals, intranets and extranets. Our clients are organisations of all sizes, from a variety of sectors including public sector, not for profit, education, health, commercial and professional services. “We have worked with Pinnacle Internet for around 8 years now. They host our own site and we have recommended them to a number of our clients. Everything seems to run smoothly with Pinnacle and on the rare occasions when they encounter a technical problem, things get sorted very quickly. We especially appreciate the technical backup Pinnacle provide and we dare say this may not be the case with other providers.” Andrew Harvey – Director, Harvey Marketing Communications

branding What we do

Case study

For us, branding is all about communication – communicating that special something that makes you unique. And if that sounds rather theoretical, we know what you mean! There has been a huge amount written about branding, and we’ve all grown tired of spin and style over substance.

Middlesex University are facing the challenge of marketing themselves in a sector where universities appear to be increasingly similar.

However, there is no doubt that successful organisations do have something that sets them apart from their competitors, something that gives them an edge. So, we begin by helping our clients to find the essence of their brand. Initially, we do this by using workshops, in-depth interviews and research. The intention is to bring their hidden knowledge to the surface. Then we help them to communicate their offer, through digital and printed communications that clearly express their brand.

We designed the distinctive ‘signature’ logo. We implemented the identity. We facilitated internal communications workshops for staff. In 2005 Education Marketing magazine identified only seven distinctive HE brands – Middlesex was one of them. Our principal consultant was awarded an honorary doctorate for his role in their brand positioning.

In the year after launch, Middlesex saw a 6% increase in applications, and had their prospectuses nominated as finalists in the prestigious HEIST awards. “Middlesex has a vision of where it wants to be – and unlike many of its rivals, a communications strategy that links back to this goal.” Alicia Clegg, Financial Times 31 July 2003

print design What we do

Case study

Every piece of printed communication is just that. It exists to communicate. Of course it should look aesthetically pleasing, but it should also be functional. It must express your brand, speak to the reader on different levels and inspire an action.

We worked with Mazars, who specialise in audit, tax, and advisory services to improve their internal communications.

That’s why we begin by understanding the purpose of the piece, who it needs to communicate with and what it needs to do as a result. Only then do we think about format and design. When we’re asked to work within existing brand guidelines we always push them to the limit to create printed communications that are creative, targeted and appropriate for the particular audience. Critically, because we design cross-media, our approach to design ensures all your communications are joined up, whether in print or online.

We created a series of books which are designed to communicate their values, personality and approach to staff throughout the UK. The Book of Who, Book of What and Book of Where use beautifully crafted typography and engaging illustrations to sum up what everyone at Mazars should be saying to one another and to their clients. The slim format and tactile uncoated paper stock make them very readable and they have been a huge success around the firm, with the concept being extended to graduate recruitment materials and beyond.
