Season Outlook/Quick Facts The San Jose State University women’s water polo team has high expectations in 2006. They’re looking to improve upon a 2005 season in which they finished with an 11-19 overall record and a 12th place finish at the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships. “We expect to perform well nationally and be in the top-10 ,” head coach Lou Tully says about his team that returns its two goalkeepers and seven other letterwinners from last season. GOALKEEPERS Senior co-captain Krissy Hansell and sophomore Kendra Adama will split time in the net. Freshman Kelly Kennison is the team’s third goalkeeper. “Krissy has a fantastic work ethic,” says goalkeeper coach Fana Fuqua. “She has the respect of her teammates and is a leader in and out of the water.” Adama saw considerable action as a freshman in 2005 and is expected to be one of the Spartans’ strongest players. “With her age and experience, she’s showing that she’s capable of being one of the strongest goalkeepers in the MPSF,” Fuqua says. “She and Krissy push each other to be better.”

Along with freshman Juliet Moss, they all have good size and speed. “Beth is a very strong outside shooter,” says Tully. “She’s ready to play and make things happen on this team.” DEFENDERS Katie Morgan is expected to be one of the team’s defensive leader. “Katie is a good outside shooter and she’s been a standout for us all three of her years here,” Tully says about his three-time letterwinner who begins the season with 93 career goals.

Senior Katie Morgan has averaged 31 goals scored a season from her defender position.

ATTACKERS Junior Angela Riddle tops the team’s attackers. Tully says that she is one of the team’s fastest players and “is very creative and intense.” Alexis Higlett, who has played competitively in Australia, New Zealand, Canada and the United States, joins the Spartans. “Lex is also very creative and has a great understanding of the game,” says the Spartans’ head coach. “She’s a great counter-attacker as well.” Freshman Julia Moruza, junior college transfer Brooke Eisner, and senior Jennie Darling are three more attackers seeking playing time this season. Moruza has good speed and strength. Eisner was impressive in preseason practice. Junior college transfers Jessie Oshann and Elise Schuetz begin the season as redshirt candidates. 2-METER PLAYERS Co-captain Beth Harberts, a junior, and sophomore Sarah Hovland top the

Junior college transfer Sara Natalizio, left-handed sophomore Kelly Pearce and transfer Brianna Lindsey are two more good shooters and good swimmers who are expected to earn significant playing time. UTILITY PLAYERS Redshirt junior Rachel Rhodes is expected to be one of team’s top allaround players. “Rachel is good at several positions and has been one of our top performers throughout her first two seasons,” the Spartans’ coach says. Left-handed freshman Tanya Torres is another of the Spartans’ best utility players. “Tanya’s got a great work ethic and she’s showing that she’s ready to be a star here,” describes Tully. “She’s extremely strong in the weight room and that carries over to her performance in the pool.” Sophomore transfer Geraldine Hazlett, redshirt freshman Tarin Gambello, and freshman Annmarie Scott round out the team’s utility players.

Gambello is another Spartan with a strong outside shot. CONFERENCE OUTLOOK Tully expects 2005’s top four teams, UCLA, USC, Stanford and Hawai’i to be the frontrunners again in 2006. Early-season tournament competitions at Stanford, February 11-12, and at UC Santa Barbara, February 25-26, will let the Spartans know quickly where they stand on a national level. “Our performance at the Santa Barbara Tournament will give us a good indication of where we are and how we’re doing as a team,” Tully says.

LouTully is in his tenth season as San Jose State University’s women’s water polo head coach. As the only coach of the Spartans, he has taken a program from infancy and developed a national-caliber team that finishes regularly in the top-20 of the final national poll. Four times in the last eight seasons, San Jose State has produced a .500 or better win-loss record. Tully has a major college coaching record of 136-152 in his first nine seasons at the Spartans’ helm. San Jose State players have earned All-American recognition eight times under his leadership. Successful at the high school, community college and club levels, he joined San Jose State in 1996 after coaching the boys and girls teams at Leland High School in San Jose. Tully began his coaching career in 1966 at Menlo Junior College where he coached water polo and swimming. He spent 11 years coaching at various local high schools including a league championship at Mt. Pleasant High School in 1977 and at Leland High School in 1997. Tully has coached high school AllAmericans including Mike Castaneda, Steve Lynn, Norman Villanueva, Tres Threatt and Brent Vanderkam. In addition to coaching the Spartans, Tully has overseen and coached the San Jose Splash for 12 years, a club team for local junior women’s players that he started. A long-time water polo official, Tully has officiated at every level including the Junior Olympic Nationals, U. S. Senior Men’s and Women’s National Championships, community college state championships and NCAA Division I men’s and women’s matches. Tully currently serves on the board of the Peninsula Referees Association. The 1967 San Jose State graduate majored in physical education and played four seasons of collegiate water polo. He went on to earn his master’s degree in physical education from San Jose State in 1972. Tully also holds a California Life Teaching Credential. He and his wife, Susan, have two adult children, Megan and Ian. The Tullys reside in San Jose.

Fana Fuqua, a member of the United States women's water polo national team, is in her first year as the assistant women’s water polo coach at San Jose State. She will concentrate on coaching the team's defense and oversee recruiting. “Fana brings a tremendous wealth of experience both nationally and internationally to the Spartan water polo program,” says head coach Lou Tully. “She is incredibly focused and her work ethic will provide a fabulous role model for everyone associated with our program.” Fuqua was an all-star goalkeeper for the 1998 through 2001 University of California water polo teams. She helped the Golden Bears to Final Four appearances in four straight seasons. California was second in 1998 and 1999 and fourth in 2000 and 2001. Fuqua was named the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation's "Goalie of the Year" in 2000 and her team's "Most Valuable Player" in 2000 and 2001. The 2001 University of California graduate majored in early childhood development. A member of the U.S. national team since 2000, she played overseas from 2002 through 2005 for the University of New South Wales team in Australia. "I played against Lou [Tully] at Cal and I've admired his teams and their professionalism," says Fuqua, a Menlo Park, Calif., native who founded the Atherton (Calif.) High School women’s water polo program. "It was never an easy game when we played them. I'm really excited for the opportunity to make this program better.”

Doug Robinson Volunteer Assistant 7th Season

Doug Robinson is in his seventh season as the Spartans’ volunteer assistant. He has coached high school water polo at several area schools and is in his 17th year as a middle school alternative schools teacher for the Santa Clara Country Office of Education. He played water polo at Live Oak High School in Morgan Hill, Calif. and continues to compete as member of the Bay Area Masters’ Water Polo Club. The 1988 graduate of Cal Poly resides in Campbell.

Kassing's 25 years experience in higher education includes service as: * Vice President for University Relations and Administrative Services - Murray State University (Kentucky) * Vice President for Development and Public Affairs - Western State College of Colorado From 1975 to 1986 he served at Belleville Area College, in Belleville, Illinois, where he taught management and marketing, served as department chair, and for two years was president of the Granite City Campus. Before that, he worked for 11 years in private industry, including eight years in corporate finance and operations management for Brown Group Inc. and three years with General Motors Corporation. His professional contributions include: * San José Sports Authority Board * United Way Silicon Valley Board * United Way Community Impact Committee * San José Downtown Association * Western Athletic Conference In its July 2005 issue, San Jose magazine named him to its "Power 100" - an annual list of the most influential people in Silicon Valley. As an assistant and associate director of athletics at the University of California from July 2000 through September 2002, he was responsible for all athletic fundraising. Bowen was credited with developing the first comprehensive planned giving program for the Golden Bears. At Saint Mary's College, he was the Director of Foundations and Corporate Relations from May 1995 to January 1997 before being appointed an associate director of athletics position by the president of the college. His grant proposal acumen helped raise $6.1-million in academic funding for the institution. From January 1997 through April 2000, he managed the athletics department's budget, directed a corporate sponsorship program and interacted with the academic senate, faculty and university personnel on student-athlete issues. The 1983 graduate of the University of Notre Dame played high school football at Moreau High in Hayward, Calif. He majored in theology/sociology and spent six years studying for the priesthood with the Holy Cross Fathers. Bowen went on to earn a master's degree in administration/education from the University of San Francisco in 1990. His first professional leadership appointment in athletics was at De La Salle High School in Concord, Calif. From 1987 through 1995, he held the positions of assistant football coach and athletics director. He is a Level 2 certified member of the College Athletic Business Management Association (CABMA), the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA), the National Society of Fund Raising Executives and an associate member of the Indiana University School of Philanthropy. Bowen currently is an adjunct professor at the University of San Francisco School of Sports Management. He has been a guest lecturer at several Bay Area university campuses. The Denver, Colo., native was born on May 27, 1961. He and his wife, Mia, are the parents of three children. In 2006, Andrew will be eight-years-old; Peter, four; and, daughter, McKenna, three.

Don W. Kassing was appointed president of San José State University in May 2005, after serving eight months as interim president. He will serve as the permanent president until 2007, when a search will be undertaken for his successor. Kassing had served San José State as vice president for administration and finance and chief financial officer since November 1993. As vice president for administration and finance, he was responsible for six major administrative units on campus: Administrative Systems and Finance, Facilities Development and operations, Human Resources, University Police Department, University Computing and Telecommunications and Spartan Shops, Inc. As Chief Financial Officer, he had overall responsibility for all business and financial affairs of the campus. He is responsible for the financing and construction of the new Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Library and the Campus Village Project (student and faculty housing). He served as Treasurer of the University Foundation and provided administrative oversight to all auxiliaries.

Tom Bowen was named San Jose State University's director of intercollegiate athletics on December 20, 2004. His leadership positions at the professional, collegiate and high school levels have prepared him to effectively deal with the complexities, intricacies and nuances of managing and operating a NCAA Division I-A program. In his first year leading the Spartans, Bowen has overhauled the department's infrastructure, invested resources both in external and internal operations, initiated an enhanced website presence, appointed new head coaches in football, men's basketball, men's golf and women's golf and named interim head coach in women's swimming and diving. Under his watch, the Spartan Foundation, the department's fund-raising component, had its most-successful annual drive in many years raising $1.1-million. For the first time in two decades, San Jose State University athletics has a local play-by-play broadcast package for Spartan football and basketball. As an integral member of the University's presidential staff, he has created new short and long-term revenue streams for intercollegiate athletics and many other campus extra-curricular activities. His initiatives and leadership have created new energy department -wide and throughout the university. His vision for student-athlete success and excellence led to the creation of a Student Success Services component. Above all, his goal for San Jose State University athletics is building a "Culture of Champions" academically, in the fields of competition and in the community. Bowen came to San Jose State after serving three years as the director of community affairs and the executive director of the 49ers Foundation for the San Francisco 49ers of the National Football League. He directed all of the team's fund-raising activities and was responsible for alumni and current player participa-

Athletics Facilities

The Student Success Services personnel, the Scott Gadway Academic Center and the football offices are in the Simpkins Stadium Center, which is located between Spartan Stadium and the Koret Athletic Training Center.

The 10,000 square-foot Koret Athletic Training Center is a state-of-theart facility that also contains a rehabilitation and training room and the Jeff Garcia Hall of Champions.

The Aquatics Center, opened in May 1988, is home to San Jose State University water polo matches and swimming and diving meets. The pool is one of the largest ever constructed in California. Dimensions are 200-feet long and 75-feet wide. Two movable bulkheads divide the pool into diving, lap swimming and recreational swimming areas.
