Unlimited overdevelopment of agriculture in the Cameron Highlands at the expense of the environment

Cameron Highlands becomes less attractive Serious environmental problems are threatening the Cameron Highlands The Cameron Highlands serves as an important catchment area for drinking water supply. Forest cover is essential in this function, despite that fact 30% of land cover is used by agriculture now. In preventing erosion and runoff in agriculture the slope gradient of the land has to be less then 25°. At this moment almost 45% of the agricultural land in the Cameron Highlands exceeds 25°, causing massive siltation of rivers due to runoff. Threats to Cameron’s Rivers The main rivers of the Highlands are now heavily polluted with E. coli (a health hazard bacterium), pesticides, suspended solids (siltation; clay particles in the river) and sewage. This ongoing and increasing water

pollution by agriculture and urban area is mainly caused by overdevelopment of urban area as well as agriculture with excessive (illegal) pesticide usage, the absence of riparian buffer zones along rivers, illegal clearing of forests for farming and the lack of proper waste water treatment facilities. The lack of enforcement by responsible governmental agencies makes things even worse. Besides this also water shortage is a problem caused by large scale water tapping for irrigation purposes in agriculture. REACH tries to help Several concerned residents of the Cameron Highlands formed the community organisation Regional Environmental Awareness Cameron Highlands (REACH). The aims of
