Addressing global challenges Whether it is climate protection, energy conservation or access to water and food, the challenges facing our world are very relevant to the plastics industry. We can make a difference, not only in the way we operate but also how we provide sustainable solutions to address these challenges. For billions of people around the world, water and sanitation are the most vital challenges. Today, more than one billion people do not have access to clean water, and over 2 billion lack proper sanitation. Climate change, urbanisation and population growth are now contributing to a global water crisis. The United Nations has set a Millennium Goal to halve the proportion of people with no access to water and sanitation by 2015. The challenge is not about finding more water; it is about better managing and preserving the resources we have. Yet, in rich or poor countries alike, inefficient water systems and unsustainable practices are widespread. The pace of transferring best-practices remains slow across value chains and communities. And awareness is too often raised only when a crisis occurs. Borealis and Borouge advanced plastics materials are shaping sustainable solutions across the entire water value chain, from source to network, for food protection, water supply or sewage systems. We are committed to go beyond business and build upon our expertise to enhance access to water for the world. We are committed to go beyond and build upon our expertise to enhance the access to water for the world.

Making a difference Borealis and Borouge have created Water for the World, a programme that fosters local knowledge and partnerships throughout the value chain to provide sustainable solutions for the availability of safe water and sanitation. Water for the World is making a difference by: • Bringing our expertise to community field projects. We work with Water and Sanitation for the Urban Poor (WSUP) to improve access to water and sanitation in areas of the world that need it most, reaching 4 million people by 2015. • Advancing science and best practices through education and training programmes on water and sanitation technologies. Co-founders of the prestigious Stockholm Water Prize, we are rewarding individuals, organisations or institutions for outstanding water-related activities. • Engaging stakeholders to encourage sustainable practices, investments and innovations. With the Gulf Plastics Pipe Academy, we lead training, standardisation and certification programmes in one of the most water-stressed regions of the world. • Leveraging our leadership to innovate and increase the offering of sustainable solutions. We will work with business partners to further develop and bring the latest polyolefin solutions to address water and sanitation challenges. • Promoting water efficiency in our operations, with our employees and in local communities to raise awareness, and to adopt and improve sustainable practices related to water and sanitation.

It sets a platform for partnerships, which is open to your ideas, comments and projects. By bridging our expertises, competencies and resources, together we can deliver better solutions and make a difference. WaterfortheWorld.net is your gateway to enter into the programme, get insights on our activities, explore new partnerships or simply join as water friends. For further information, regional programme leaders are available at Borealis, in Europe, and Borouge, in the Middle East and Asia. They can be reached at [email protected]. We will regularly report on our progress and, through case studies, we will illustrate partnerships, knowledge and sustainable solutions in action. Unlike energy, there is no alternative to water. Solutions exist.
