TUTORING SUBJECTS: Please identify the department(s) and course number(s) of the subject(s) you plan on tutoring. Then obtain a faculty member’s signature from that department. This is so we can confirm that you are competent to tutor in that subject. You must indicate specific classes you can tutor, even if you have a Master’s Degree or teaching experience you need a faculty signature. Consult the appropriate USC Course Catalogue for assistance in identifying the department and course number. A faculty signature is not required if you have tutored for Center for Academic Support in the past year and plan to tutor in the same subject(s). If you plan to tutor a new subject then a faculty signature is required. FACULTY: Your signature certifies that this student is qualified to tutor the courses indicated.

Center for Academic Support Academic Enrichment Services General Overview The Center for Academic Support (CAS) is the central referral agency for the learning enrichment of the University. The Center offers a variety of academic support services that are available for both specific USC student populations as well as for the general student population. In collaboration with other offices and academic units across campus, the Center for Academic Support provides a variety of programs offering direct services focused on students’ individual needs and academic enrichment.

Tutors Tutors are hired to provide specialized assistance in individual subject areas. As a tutor, you are helping students understand their preferred learning styles and demonstrating how to apply that to a specific subject in order to improve academic performance. A tutor’s goal should be to help his or her students become independent learners, not to simply help them arrive at the correct answer. All good tutors assist students in understanding the learning process and acquiring the necessary skills to problem solve.

Learning Assistants All Learning Assistants must be current graduate students. In addition to their consultation hours, learning assistants will have the opportunity to meet their additional hours through their participation in the revamping of our website, assessment, delivery of Learning Enrichment Workshops and working with various student organizations’ study hour events. Training will be more extensive for Learning Assistants, as they will need to be familiar with our learning enrichment packets.

1

Consultation Hours All Tutor Walk-in Hours are posted online and advertised to students and departments. You must schedule three (3) hours per week as “Consultation Hours” in the Center for Academic Support (STU 301). During those scheduled consultation hours you will be expected to be in the Center for Academic Support waiting for students to come in for tutoring. If you need to change your consultation hours, you must notify the tutor coordinator ([email protected]) one week in advance of the change. This way there is time to change the consultation hours that are posted online. Contact the Center for Academic Support (213-740-0776) if you will be out sick during your scheduled Consultation Hours. Individual Standing Appointments As students come in and meet with you during your walk-in consultation hours, you should encourage them to establish a time to meet on a weekly basis in order to strengthen their understanding of course material. Please be prepared to schedule seven (7) additional hours that will be considered your one-on-one sessions with students. Outside Meeting Locations All one-on-one appointments must occur in quiet public spaces. You are prohibited from meeting with students in any residence hall rooms or apartments (not theirs, not yours, not on-campus, not off-campus). All tutoring sessions may occur in lounge spaces of residential halls, libraries, library study rooms, eating establishments, or university lounge spaces.

2

Folders Each tutor or learning assistant will have his or her own folder. Please bring this folder with you to all of your consultation hours and every tutoring appointment. The folder will contain your Biweekly Tutoring Logs, your signed Tutoring Procedures Agreement, Tutoring Pay Procedures, and Important Tutoring Dates. Use this folder as a resource and an organizational tool. Hours and Compensation

Hours All tutors and learning assistants will work between 3 and 10 hours per week. The 3 consultation hours are your scheduled hours that you have agreed to be in the Center for Academic Support, which you will be compensated for 4 hours. The remaining 6 hours are to be blocked out for additional one-on-one tutoring hours. If tardiness, missed appointments or rescheduled consultation hours becomes problematic, your employment as a tutor or learning assistant may be terminated.

NEW PAY RATES Undergraduate Tutors New: $9.50/hour Returning: $9.75/hour Tutors are eligible for a $.25/hour increase each additional semester they return. Increases will be based on merit and will be determined at the beginning of each semester. The cap for any undergraduate tutor ‘s hourly rate is $10.50. Graduate Tutors New: $10.50/hour

3

STIPEND OPTIONS All tutors and learning assistants, including international student workers, must be paid through our OTIS payroll system. Stipends are no longer an option for compensation. International students will need to apply for a social security number, in the case that they do not already have one. Our office will provide a letter of support for such applications, should it be necessary. •

Your payroll will only be approved based on the scheduled appointments and on the timely submission of completed pay documents.

This certifies that I have read and understand the Center for Academic Support’s Tutoring Procedures.
