Visions in the Bible Introduction There are many recorded visions in the Bible. Aside from the visions recorded in the books of the prophets, there are seventeen visions individuals saw. These are distinct from dreams (see “Dreams in the Bible” study). Most dreams occurred with the eyes closed and are connected with night and slumber. Those who saw visions sometimes saw “visions of the night” and other times saw visions when their eyes were wide open.

Words All occurrences of the words “vision” and “visions” are translated from one of the following: Strong’s Hebrew 2376—chêzev (Chald.), khay’-zev; from 2370; a sight:–look, vision Strong’s Hebrew 2377—châzôwn, khaw-zone’; from 2372; a sight (mentally), i.e. a dream, revelation, or oracle:—vision Strong’s Hebrew 2378—châzôwth, khaw-zooth’; from 2372; a revelation:—vision Strong’s Hebrew 2380—châzûwth, khaw-zooth’; from 2372; a look; hence (fig.) striking appearance, revelation, or (by impl.) compact:—agreement, notable (one), vision Strong’s Hebrew 2384—chizzâyôwn, khiz-zaw-yone’; a revelation, espec. by dream:—vision Strong’s Hebrew 4236—mach|zeh, makh-az-eh’; from 2372; a vision:—vision Strong’s Hebrew 4758—mar’eh, mar-eh’; from 7200; a view (the act of seeing); also an appearance (the thing seen), whether (real) a shape (espec. if handsome, comeliness; often plur. the looks), or (mental) a vision:—x apparently, appearance (-reth), x as soon as beautiful (-ly), countenance, fair, favoured, form, goodly, to look (up) on (to), look [-eth], pattern, to see, seem, sight, visage, vision. Strong’s Hebrew 4759—mar’âh, mar-aw’; fem. of 4758; a vision; also (causat.) a mirror:—looking glass, vision. Strong’s Hebrew 7200—râ’âh, raw-aw’; a prim. root; to see, lit. or fig. (in numerous applications, direct and implied, trans., intrans. and causat.):—advise self, appear, approve, behold, x certainly, consider, discern, (make to) enjoy, have experience, gaze, take heed, x indeed, x joyfully, lo, look (on, one another, one on another, one upon another, out, up, upon), mark, meet, x be near, perceive, present, provide, regard, (have) respect, (fore-, cause to, let) see (-r, -m, one another), shew (self), x sight of others, (e-) spy, stare, x surely, x think, view, visions. Strong’s Hebrew 7203—rô’eh, ro-eh’; act. part. of 7200; a seer (as often rendered); but also (abstr.) a vision:—vision. Strong’s Greek 3701—4ptasia, op-tas-ee’-ah; from a presumed der. of 3700; visuality, i.e. (concr.) an apparition:—vision. Strong’s Greek 3705—h4rama, hor’-am-ah; from 3708; something gazed at, i.e. a spectacle (espec. supernat.):—sight, vision. Strong’s Greek 3706—h4rasis, hor’-as-is; from 3708; the act of gazing, i.e. (external) an aspect or (intern.) an inspired appearance:—sight, vision.

Important Prime Roots Strong’s Hebrew 2372—châzâh, khaw-zaw’; a prim. root; to gaze at; mentally to perceive, contemplate (with pleasure); spec. to have a vision of:—behold, look, prophesy, provide, see. Strong’s Greek 3708—h4raÇ, hor-ah’-o; prop. to stare at [comp. 3700], i.e. (by impl.) to discern clearly (phys. or ment.); by extens. to attend to; by Hebr. to experience; pass. to appear:—behold, perceive, see, take heed. Miscellaneous Facts <

Eight visions were given at night or can be presumed to have been given at night: Vision 2 (Abram), Vision 3 (Jacob), Vision 5 (Samuel), Vision 6 (Nathan), Vision 7 (Nebuchadnezzar), Vision 8 (Nebuchadnezzar), Vision 16 (Paul), Vision 17 (Paul). These visions can be broken down into pairs. Abram’s and Jacob’s visions both had to do with Israelites being enslaved in Egypt. Samuel’s vision took place in Yahveh’s house, and Nathan’s vision had to do with building Yahveh’s house. Nebuchadnezzar’s two visions both had to do with the ultimate destruction of Satan’s kingdom. Paul’s two night visions both had to do with where his journeys would take him.

<

Nine visions were either given during the day or can be presumed to have been given during the day: Vision 1 (Abram), Vision 4 (Baalam), Vision 9 (Zacharias), Vision 10 (Peter and James), Vision 11 (Certain Women), Vision 12 (Saul/Paul), Vision 13 (Ananias), Vision 14 (Cornelius), Vision 15 (Peter). The day visions can also be divided down. Abram’s and Baalam’s visions were both directly associated with the people of Israel. Zacharias’ vision, the Transfiguration, and the vision of the Certain Women had to do with the coming of Messiah (which John the Baptist foretold). Ananias’ vision and Paul’s vision were connected to each other and to Paul’s ministry. Cornelius’ vision and Peter’s vision were connected to each other and to the spreading of the Gospel to the Gentiles. Two sets of day visions were conncected to each other—Ananias’ and Paul’s, and Cornelius’ and Peter’s. Both had to do, at least in part, with the spread of the Gospel to the Gentiles.

<

The following tribes are represented in the visions: Ephraim (probably), Judah, Benjamin, Levi, and whatever tribes the prophets were from. Several Gentiles saw visions: Balaam,

Cornelius, and perhaps Ananias. Abram and Jacob were forefathers of the Israelite tribes.

And Saul arose from the earth; and when his eyes were opened, he saw no man: but they led him by the hand, and brought him into Damascus. And there came a voice to him, “Rise, Peter; kill, and eat.” But Peter said, “Not so, Lord; for I have never eaten any thing that is common or unclean.” And the voice spake unto him again the second time, “What God hath cleansed, that call not thou common.”

Ezekiel saw “visions of God”

The Visions Abram’s Vision Genesis 15:1–20: 1 After these things the word of the LORD came unto Abram in a vision (4236), saying, “Fear not, Abram: I am thy shield, and thy exceeding great reward.” 2 And Abram said, “Lord GOD, what wilt thou give me, seeing I go childless, and the steward of my house is this Eliezer of Damascus?” 3 And Abram said, “Behold, to me thou hast given no seed: and, lo, one born in my house is mine heir.” 4 And, behold, the word of the LORD came unto him, saying, “This shall not be thine heir; but he that shall come forth out of thine own bowels shall be thine heir.” 5 And he brought him forth abroad, and said, “Look now toward heaven, and tell the stars, if thou be able to number them:” and he said unto him, “So shall thy seed be.” 6 And he believed in the LORD ; and He counted it to him for righteousness. 7 And He said unto him, “I am the LORD That brought thee out of Ur of the Chaldees, to give thee this land to inherit it. 8 And he said, “Lord GOD, whereby shall I know that I shall inherit it?” 9 And he said unto him, “Take Me an heifer of three years old, and a she goat of three years old, and a ram of three years old, and a turtledove, and a young pigeon.” 10 And he took unto him all these, and divided them in the midst, and laid each piece one against another: but the birds divided he not. 11 And when the fowls came down upon the carcases, Abram drove them away. 12 And when the sun was going down, a deep sleep fell upon Abram; and, lo, an horror of great darkness fell upon him. 13 And He said unto Abram,

“Know of a surety that thy seed shall be a stranger in a land that is not theirs, (and shall serve them; and they shall afflict them) four hundred years; 14 And also that nation, whom they shall serve, will I judge: and afterward shall they come out with great substance. 15 And thou shalt go to thy fathers in peace; thou shalt be buried in a good old age. 16 But in the fourth generation they shall come hither again: for the iniquity of the Amorites is not yet full.” 17 And it came to pass, that, when the sun went down, and it was dark, behold a smoking furnace, and a burning lamp that passed between those pieces. 18 In the same day the LORD made a covenant with Abram, saying, “Unto thy seed have I given this land, from the river of Egypt unto the great river, the river Euphrates: 19 The Kenites, and the Kenizzites, and the Kadmonites, 20 And the Hittites, and the Perizzites, and the Rephaims, 21 And the Amorites, and the Canaanites, and the Girgashites, and the Jebusites.” Jacob’s Vision Genesis 46:1–4: 1 And Israel took his journey with all that he had, and came to Beer-sheba, and offered sacrifices unto the God of his father Isaac. 2 And God spake unto Israel in the visions (4759) of the night, and said, “Jacob, Jacob.” And he said, “Here am I.” 3 And He said, “I am GOD , the GOD of thy father: fear not to go down into Egypt; for I will there make of thee a great nation: 4 I will go down with thee into Egypt; and I will also surely bring thee up again: and Joseph shall put his hand upon thine eyes.” Balaam’s Vision Numbers 24:1–25: 1 And when Balaam saw that it pleased the LORD to bless Israel, he went not, as at other times, to seek for enchantments, but he set his face toward the wilderness. 2 And Balaam lifted up his eyes, and he saw Israel abiding in his tents according to their tribes; and the Spirit of God came upon him. 3 And he took up his parable, and said, “Balaam the son of Beor hath said, And the man whose eyes are open hath said: 4 He hath said, which heard the words of GOD, Which saw the vision (4236) of the ALMIGHTY, Falling into a trance, but having his eyes open: 5 ‘How goodly are thy tents, O Jacob, and thy tabernacles, O Israel! 6 As the valleys are they spread forth, as gardens by the river’s side, as the trees of lign aloes which the LORD hath planted, and as cedar trees beside the waters. 7 He shall pour the water out of his buckets, and his seed shall be in many waters, and his king shall be higher than Agag, and his kingdom shall be exalted. 8 God brought him forth out of Egypt; he hath as it were the strength of an unicorn: he shall eat up the nations his enemies, and shall break their bones, and pierce them through with his arrows. 9 He couched, he lay down as a lion, and as a great lion: who shall stir him up? Blessed is he that blesseth thee, and cursed is he that curseth thee.’” 10 And Balak’s anger was kindled against Balaam, and he smote his hands together: and Balak said unto Balaam, “I called thee to curse mine enemies, and, behold, thou hast altogether blessed them these three times. 11 Therefore now flee thou to thy place: I thought to promote thee unto great honour; but, lo, the LORD hath kept thee back from honour.” 12 And Balaam said unto Balak, “Spake I not also to thy messengers which thou sentest unto me, saying, 13 ‘If Balak would give me his house full of silver and gold, I cannot go beyond the commandment of the LORD, to do either good or bad of mine own mind; but what the LORD saith, that will I speak?’ 14 And now, behold, I go unto my people: come therefore, and I will advertise thee what this people shall do to thy people in the latter days.” 15 And he took up his parable, and said, ‘Balaam the son of Beor hath said, and the man whose eyes are open hath said: 16 He hath said, which heard the words of GOD, and knew the knowledge of the Most High, which saw the vision of the Almighty, falling into a trance, but having his eyes open: 17 I shall see Him, but not now: I shall behold Him, but not nigh: there shall come a Star out of Jacob, and a Sceptre shall rise out of Israel, and shall smite the corners of

Moab, and destroy all the children of Sheth. 18 And Edom shall be a possession, Seir also shall be a possession for his enemies; and Israel shall do valiantly. 19 Out of Jacob shall come he that shall have dominion, and shall destroy him that remaineth of the city.’” 20 And when he looked on Amalek, he took up his parable, and said, “Amalek was the first of the nations; but his latter end shall be that he perish for ever.” 21 And he looked on the Kenites, and took up his parable, and said, “Strong is thy dwellingplace, and thou puttest thy nest in a rock. 22 Nevertheless the Kenite shall be wasted, until Asshur shall carry thee away captive.” 23 And he took up his parable, and said, “Alas, who shall live when God doeth this! 24 And ships shall come from the coast of Chittim, and shall afflict Asshur, and shall afflict Eber, and he also shall perish for ever.” 25 And Balaam rose up, and went and returned to his place: and Balak also went his way. Samuel’s Vision I Samuel 3:1–21: 1 And the child Samuel ministered unto the LORD before Eli. And the word of the LORD was precious in those days; there was no open vision (2377). 2 And it came to pass at that time, when Eli was laid down in his place, and his eyes began to wax dim, that he could not see; 3 And ere the lamp of God went out in the temple of the LORD , where the ark of God was, and Samuel was laid down to sleep; 4 That the LORD called Samuel: and he answered, “Here am I.” 5 And he ran unto Eli, and said, “Here am I;” for thou calledst me. And he said, “I called not; lie down again.” And he went and lay down. 6 And the LORD called yet again, “Samuel.” And Samuel arose and went to Eli, and said, “Here am I; for thou didst call me.” And he answered, “I called not, my son; lie down again.” 7 Now Samuel did not yet know the LORD , neither was the word of the LORD yet revealed unto him. 8 And the LORD called Samuel again the third time. And he arose and went to Eli, and said, “Here am I; for thou didst call me.” And Eli perceived that the LORD had called the child. 9 Therefore Eli said unto Samuel, “Go, lie down: and it shall be, if he call thee, that thou shalt say, ‘Speak, LORD ; for Thy servant heareth.” So Samuel went and lay down in his place. 10 And the LORD came, and stood, and called as at other times, “Samuel, Samuel.” Then Samuel answered, “Speak; for Thy servant heareth.” 11 And the LORD said to Samuel, “Behold, I will do a thing in Israel, at which both the ears of every one that heareth it shall tingle. 12 In that day I will perform against Eli all things which I have spoken concerning his house: when I begin, I will also make an end. 13 For I have told him that I will judge his house for ever for the iniquity which he knoweth; because his sons made themselves vile, and he restrained them not. 14 And therefore I have sworn unto the house of Eli, that the iniquity of Eli's house shall not be purged with sacrifice nor offering for ever.” 15 And Samuel lay until the morning, and opened the doors of the house of the LORD . And Samuel feared to shew Eli the vision (4758). 16 Then Eli called Samuel, and said, “Samuel, my son.” And he answered, “Here am I.” 17 And he said, “What is the thing that the LORD hath said unto thee? I pray thee hide it not from me: God do so to thee, and more also, if thou hide any thing from me of all the things that He said unto thee.” 18 And Samuel told him every whit, and hid nothing from him. And he said, “It is the LORD : let Him do what seemeth Him good.” 19 And Samuel grew, and the LORD was with him, and did let none of his words fall to the ground. 20 And all Israel from Dan even to Beer-sheba knew that Samuel was established to be a prophet of the LORD . 21 And the LORD appeared again in Shiloh: for the LORD revealed Himself to Samuel in Shiloh by the word of the LORD . Nathan’s Vision II Samuel 7:1–17: 1 And it came to pass, when the king sat in his house, and the LORD had given him rest round about from all his enemies; 2 That the king said unto Nathan the prophet, “See now, I dwell in an house of cedar, but the ark of God dwelleth within curtains.” 3 And Nathan said to the king, “Go, do all that is in thine heart; for the LORD is with thee.” 4 And it came to pass that

night, that the word of the LORD came unto Nathan, saying, 5 “Go and tell My servant David, ‘Thus saith the LORD , ‘Shalt thou build Me an house for Me to dwell in? 6 Whereas I have not dwelt in any house since the time that I brought up the children of Israel out of Egypt, even to this day, but have walked in a tent and in a tabernacle. 7 In all the places wherein I have walked with all the children of Israel spake I a word with any of the tribes of Israel, whom I commanded to feed My people Israel, saying, ‘Why build ye not Me an house of cedar?’ ’ ’ 8 Now therefore so shalt thou say unto My servant David, ‘Thus saith the LORD of hosts, I took thee from the sheepcote, from following the sheep, to be ruler over My people, over Israel: 9 And I was with thee whithersoever thou wentest, and have cut off all thine enemies out of thy sight, and have made thee a great name, like unto the name of the great men that are in the earth. 10 Moreover I will appoint a place for My people Israel, and will plant them, that they may dwell in a place of their own, and move no more; neither shall the children of wickedness afflict them any more, as beforetime, 11 And as since the time that I commanded judges to be over My people Israel, and have caused thee to rest from all thine enemies. Also the LORD telleth thee that He will make thee an house. 12 And when thy days be fulfilled, and thou shalt sleep with thy fathers, I will set up thy seed after thee, which shall proceed out of thy bowels, and I will establish his kingdom. 13 He shall build an house for My name, and I will stablish the throne of his kingdom for ever. 14 I will be his Father, and he shall be My son. If he commit iniquity, I will chasten him with the rod of men, and with the stripes of the children of men: 15 But my mercy shall not depart away from him, as I took it from Saul, whom I put away before thee. 16 And thine house and thy kingdom shall be established for ever before thee: thy throne shall be established for ever.’ ‘” 17 According to all these words, and according to all this vision (2384), so did Nathan speak unto David. I Chronicles 17:1–15: 1 Now it came to pass, as David sat in his house, that David said to Nathan the prophet, “Lo, I dwell in an house of cedars, but the ark of the covenant of the LORD remaineth under curtains.” 2 Then Nathan said unto David, “Do all that is in thine heart; for God is with thee.” 3 And it came to pass the same night, that the word of God came to Nathan, saying, 4 “Go and tell David My servant, ‘Thus saith the LORD , Thou shalt not build Me an house to dwell in: 5 For I have not dwelt in an house since the day that I brought up Israel unto this day; but have gone from tent to tent, and from one tabernacle to another. 6 Wheresoever I have walked with all Israel, spake I a word to any of the judges of Israel, whom I commanded to feed My people, saying, ‘Why have ye not built Me an house of cedars?’ ‘ ’ 7 Now therefore thus shalt thou say unto My servant David, ‘Thus saith the LORD of hosts, I took thee from the sheepcote, even from following the sheep, that thou shouldest be ruler over My people Israel: 8 And I have been with thee whithersoever thou hast walked, and have cut off all thine enemies from before thee, and have made thee a name like the name of the great men that are in the earth. 9 Also I will ordain a place for My people Israel, and will plant them, and they shall dwell in their place, and shall be moved no more; neither shall the children of wickedness waste them any more, as at the beginning, 10 And since the time that I commanded judges to be over My people Israel. Moreover I will subdue all thine enemies. Furthermore I tell thee that the LORD will build thee an house. 11 And it shall come to pass, when thy days be expired that thou must go to be with thy fathers, that I will raise up thy seed after thee, which shall be of thy sons; and I will establish his kingdom. 12 He shall build Me an house, and I will stablish his throne for ever. 13 I will be his father, and he shall be My son: and I will not take My mercy away from him, as I took it from him that was before thee: 14 But I will settle him in Mine house and in My kingdom for ever: and his throne shall be established for evermore. 15 According to all these words, and according to all this vision (2377), so did Nathan speak unto David.

Nebuchadnezzar’s Vision Daniel 2:1–49: 1 And in the second year of the reign of Nebuchadnezzar Nebuchadnezzar dreamed (2492) dreams (2472), wherewith his spirit was troubled, and his sleep brake from him. 2 Then the king commanded to call the magicians, and the astrologers, and the sorcerers, and the Chaldeans, for to shew the king his dream (2472). So they came and stood before the king. 3 And the king said unto them, I have dreamed (2492) a dream (2472), and my spirit was troubled to know the dream (2472).” 4 Then spake the Chaldeans to the king in Syriack, “O king, live for ever: tell thy servants the dream (2493), and we will shew the interpretation.” 5 The king answered and said to the Chaldeans, “The thing is gone from me: if ye will not make known unto me the dream (2493), with the interpretation thereof, ye shall be cut in pieces, and your houses shall be made a dunghill. 6 But if ye shew the dream (2493), and the interpretation thereof, ye shall receive of me gifts and rewards and great honour: therefore shew me the dream (2493), and the interpretation thereof.” 7 They answered again and said, “Let the king tell his servants the dream (2493), and we will shew the interpretation of it.” 8 The king answered and said, “I know of certainty that ye would gain the time, because ye see the thing is gone from me. 9 But if ye will not make known unto me the dream (2493), there is but one decree for you: for ye have prepared lying and corrupt words to speak before me, till the time be changed: therefore tell me the dream (2493), and I shall know that ye can shew me the interpretation thereof.” 10 The Chaldeans answered before the king, and said, “There is not a man upon the earth that can shew the king’s matter: therefore there is no king, lord, nor ruler, that asked such things at any magician, or astrologer, or Chaldean. 11 And it is a rare thing that the king requireth, and there is none other that can shew it before the king, except the gods, whose dwelling is not with flesh.” 12 For this cause the king was angry and very furious, and commanded to destroy all the wise men of Babylon. 13 And the decree went forth that the wise men should be slain; and they sought Daniel and his fellows to be slain. 14 Then Daniel answered with counsel and wisdom to Arioch the captain of the king’s guard, which was gone forth to slay the wise men of Babylon: 15 He answered and said to Arioch the king’s captain, “Why is the decree so hasty from the king?” Then Arioch made the thing known to Daniel. 16 Then Daniel went in, and desired of the king that he would give him time, and that he would shew the king the interpretation. 17 Then Daniel went to his house, and made the thing known to Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah, his companions: 18 That they would desire mercies of the God of heaven concerning this secret; that Daniel and his fellows should not perish with the rest of the wise men of Babylon. 19 Then was the secret revealed unto Daniel in a night vision (2376). Then Daniel blessed the God of heaven. 20 Daniel answered and said, “Blessed be the name of God for ever and ever: for wisdom and might are His: 21 And He changeth the times and the seasons: He removeth kings, and setteth up kings: He giveth wisdom unto the wise, and knowledge to them that know understanding: 22 He revealeth the deep and secret things: He knoweth what is in the darkness, and the light dwelleth with Him. 23 I thank thee, and praise Thee, O Thou God of my fathers, Who hast given me wisdom and might, and hast made known unto me now what we desired of Thee: for Thou hast now made known unto us the king’s matter.” 24 Therefore Daniel went in unto Arioch, whom the king had ordained to destroy the wise men of Babylon: he went and said thus unto him; “Destroy not the wise men of Babylon: bring me in before the king, and I will shew unto the king the interpretation.: 25 Then Arioch brought in Daniel before the king in haste, and said thus unto him, “I have found a man of the captives of Judah, that will make known unto the king the interpretation.” 26 The king answered and said to Daniel, whose name was Belteshazzar, “Art thou able to make known unto me the dream (2493) which I have seen, and the interpretation thereof?” 27 Daniel answered in the presence of the king, and said, “The secret which the king hath demanded cannot the wise men, the astrologers, the magicians, the soothsayers, shew unto the king; 28 But there is a God in heaven That revealeth secrets, and maketh known to the king

Nebuchadnezzar what shall be in the latter days. Thy dream (2493), and the visions of thy head upon thy bed, are these; 29 As for thee, O king, thy thoughts came into thy mind upon thy bed, what should come to pass hereafter: and He That revealeth secrets maketh known to thee what shall come to pass. 30 But as for me, this secret is not revealed to me for any wisdom that I have more than any living, but for their sakes that shall make known the interpretation to the king, and that thou mightest know the thoughts of thy heart. 31 Thou, O king, sawest, and behold a great image. This great image, whose brightness was excellent, stood before thee; and the form thereof was terrible. 32 This image’s head was of fine gold, his breast and his arms of silver, his belly and his thighs of brass, 33 His legs of iron, his feet part of iron and part of clay. 34 Thou sawest till that a stone was cut out without hands, which smote the image upon his feet that were of iron and clay, and brake them to pieces. 35 Then was the iron, the clay, the brass, the silver, and the gold, broken to pieces together, and became like the chaff of the summer threshingfloors; and the wind carried them away, that no place was found for them: and the stone that smote the image became a great mountain, and filled the whole earth. 36 This is the dream (2493); and we will tell the interpretation thereof before the king. 37 Thou, O king, art a king of kings: for the God of heaven hath given thee a kingdom, power, and strength, and glory. 38 And wheresoever the children of men dwell, the beasts of the field and the fowls of the heaven hath He given into thine hand, and hath made thee ruler over them all. Thou art this head of gold. 39 And after thee shall arise another kingdom inferior to thee, and another third kingdom of brass, which shall bear rule over all the earth. 40 And the fourth kingdom shall be strong as iron: forasmuch as iron breaketh in pieces and subdueth all things: and as iron that breaketh all these, shall it break in pieces and bruise. 41 And whereas thou sawest the feet and toes, part of potters’ clay, and part of iron, the kingdom shall be divided; but there shall be in it of the strength of the iron, forasmuch as thou sawest the iron mixed with miry clay. 42 And as the toes of the feet were part of iron, and part of clay, so the kingdom shall be partly strong, and partly broken. 43 And whereas thou sawest iron mixed with miry clay, they shall mingle themselves with the seed of men: but they shall not cleave one to another, even as iron is not mixed with clay. 44 And in the days of these kings shall the God of heaven set up a kingdom, which shall never be destroyed: and the kingdom shall not be left to other people, but it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand for ever. 45 Forasmuch as thou sawest that the stone was cut out of the mountain without hands, and that it brake in pieces the iron, the brass, the clay, the silver, and the gold; the great God hath made known to the king what shall come to pass hereafter: and the dream (2493) is certain, and the interpretation thereof sure.” 46 Then the king Nebuchadnezzar fell upon his face, and worshipped Daniel, and commanded that they should offer an oblation and sweet odours unto him. 47 The king answered unto Daniel, and said, “Of a truth it is, that your God is a God of gods, and a Lord of kings, and a Revealer of secrets, seeing thou couldest reveal this secret.” 48 Then the king made Daniel a great man, and gave him many great gifts, and made him ruler over the whole province of Babylon, and chief of the governors over all the wise men of Babylon. 49 Then Daniel requested of the king, and he set Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego, over the affairs of the province of Babylon: but Daniel sat in the gate of the king. Nebuchadnezzar’s Vision Daniel 4:4–37: 4 “I Nebuchadnezzar was at rest in mine house, and flourishing in my palace: 5 I saw a dream (2493) which made me afraid, and the thoughts upon my bed and the visions (2376) of my head troubled me. 6 Therefore made I a decree to bring in all the wise men of Babylon before me, that they might make known unto me the interpretation of the dream (2493). 7 Then came in the magicians, the astrologers, the Chaldeans, and the soothsayers: and I told the dream (2493) before them; but they did not make known unto me the interpretation thereof. 8 But at the last Daniel came in before me, whose name was Belteshazzar, according to the name of my god,

and in whom is the spirit of the holy gods: and before him I told the dream (2493), saying, 9 ‘O Belteshazzar, master of the magicians, because I know that the spirit of the holy gods is in thee, and no secret troubleth thee, tell me the visions (2376) of my dream (2493) that I have seen, and the interpretation thereof. 10 Thus were the visions (2376) (of mine head in my bed; I saw, and behold a tree in the midst of the earth, and the height thereof was great. 11 The tree grew, and was strong, and the height thereof reached unto heaven, and the sight thereof to the end of all the earth: 12 The leaves thereof were fair, and the fruit thereof much, and in it was meat for all: the beasts of the field had shadow under it, and the fowls of the heaven dwelt in the boughs thereof, and all flesh was fed of it. 13 I saw in the visions (2376) of my head upon my bed, and, behold, a watcher and an holy one came down from heaven; 14 He cried aloud, and said thus, ‘Hew down the tree, and cut off his branches, shake off his leaves, and scatter his fruit: let the beasts get away from under it, and the fowls from his branches: 15 Nevertheless leave the stump of his roots in the earth, even with a band of iron and brass, in the tender grass of the field; and let it be wet with the dew of heaven, and let his portion be with the beasts in the grass of the earth: 16 Let his heart be changed from man’s, and let a beast’s heart be given unto him; and let seven times pass over him. 17 This matter is by the decree of the watchers, and the demand by the word of the holy ones: to the intent that the living may know that the MOST HIGH ruleth in the kingdom of men, and giveth it to whomsoever He will, and setteth up over it the basest of men.’ 18 This dream (2493) I king Nebuchadnezzar have seen. Now thou, O Belteshazzar, declare the interpretation thereof, forasmuch as all the wise men of my kingdom are not able to make known unto me the interpretation: but thou art able; for the spirit of the holy gods is in thee.’ 19 Then Daniel, whose name was Belteshazzar, was astonied for one hour, and his thoughts troubled him. The king spake, and said, ‘Belteshazzar, let not the dream (2493), or the interpretation thereof, trouble thee.’ Belteshazzar answered and said, ‘My lord, the dream (2493) be to them that hate thee, and the interpretation thereof to thine enemies. 20 The tree that thou sawest, which grew, and was strong, whose height reached unto the heaven, and the sight thereof to all the earth; 21 Whose leaves were fair, and the fruit thereof much, and in it was meat for all; under which the beasts of the field dwelt, and upon whose branches the fowls of the heaven had their habitation: 22 It is thou, O king, that art grown and become strong: for thy greatness is grown, and reacheth unto heaven, and thy dominion to the end of the earth. 23 And whereas the king saw a watcher and an holy one coming down from heaven, and saying, Hew the tree down, and destroy it; yet leave the stump of the roots thereof in the earth, even with a band of iron and brass, in the tender grass of the field; and let it be wet with the dew of heaven, and let his portion be with the beasts of the field, till seven times pass over him;’ 24 This is the interpretation, O king, and this is the decree of the MOST HIGH , which is come upon my lord the king: 25 That they shall drive thee from men, and thy dwelling shall be with the beasts of the field, and they shall make thee to eat grass as oxen, and they shall wet thee with the dew of heaven, and seven times shall pass over thee, till thou know that the MOST HIGH ruleth in the kingdom of men, and giveth it to whomsoever He will. 26 And whereas they commanded to leave the stump of the tree roots; thy kingdom shall be sure unto thee, after that thou shalt have known that the heavens do rule. 27 Wherefore, O king, let my counsel be acceptable unto thee, and break off thy sins by righteousness, and thine iniquities by shewing mercy to the poor; if it may be a lengthening of thy tranquillity.’ 28 All this came upon the king Nebuchadnezzar. 29 At the end of twelve months he walked in the palace of the kingdom of Babylon. 30 The king spake, and said, ‘Is not this great Babylon, that I have built for the house of the kingdom by the might of my power, and for the honour of my majesty?’ 31 While the word was in the king’s mouth, there fell a voice from heaven, saying, ‘O king Nebuchadnezzar, to thee it is spoken; The kingdom is departed from thee. 32 And they shall drive thee from men, and thy dwelling shall be with the beasts of the field: they shall make thee to eat grass as oxen, and seven times shall pass over thee, until thou know that the MOST HIGH ruleth in the kingdom of men, and giveth it to whomsoever He will.’ 33 The same hour was the thing

fulfilled upon Nebuchadnezzar: and he was driven from men, and did eat grass as oxen, and his body was wet with the dew of heaven, till his hairs were grown like eagles’ feathers, and his nails like birds’ claws. 34 And at the end of the days I Nebuchadnezzar lifted up mine eyes unto heaven, and mine understanding returned unto me, and I blessed the most High, and I praised and honoured Him That liveth for ever, Whose dominion is an everlasting dominion, and His kingdom is from generation to generation: 35 And all the inhabitants of the earth are reputed as nothing: and He doeth according to His will in the army of heaven, and among the inhabitants of the earth: and none can stay His hand, or say unto Him, ‘What doest Thou?’ 36 At the same time my reason returned unto me; and for the glory of my kingdom, mine honour and brightness returned unto me; and my counsellors and my lords sought unto me; and I was established in my kingdom, and excellent majesty was added unto me. 37 Now I Nebuchadnezzar praise and extol and honour the King of heaven, all Whose works are truth, and His ways judgment: and those that walk in pride He is able to abase.” Zacharias’ Vision Luke 1:5–25: 5 There was in the days of Herod, the king of Judaea, a certain priest named Zacharias, of the course of Abia: and his wife was of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elisabeth. 6 And they were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the LORD blameless. 7 And they had no child, because that Elisabeth was barren, and they both were now well stricken in years. 8 And it came to pass, that while he executed the priest’s office before God in the order of his course, 9 According to the custom of the priest’s office, his lot was to burn incense when he went into the Temple of the LORD . 10 And the whole multitude of the people were praying without at the time of incense. 11 And there appeared unto him an angel of the LORD standing on the right side of the altar of incense. 12 And when Zacharias saw him, he was troubled, and fear fell upon him. 13 But the angel said unto him, “Fear not, Zacharias: for thy prayer is heard; and thy wife Elisabeth shall bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name John. 14 And thou shalt have joy and gladness; and many shall rejoice at his birth. 15 For he shall be great in the sight of the LORD, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink; and he shall be filled with the Holy Ghost, even from his mother’s womb. 16 And many of the children of Israel shall he turn to the LORD their God. 17 And he shall go before Him in the spirit and power of Elias, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just; to make ready a people prepared for the LORD .” 18 And Zacharias said unto the angel, “Whereby shall I know this? for I am an old man, and my wife well stricken in years.” 19 And the angel answering said unto him, “I am Gabriel, that stand in the presence of God; and am sent to speak unto thee, and to shew thee these glad tidings. 20 And, behold, thou shalt be dumb, and not able to speak, until the day that these things shall be performed, because thou believest not my words, which shall be fulfilled in their season.” 21 And the people waited for Zacharias, and marvelled that he tarried so long in the Temple. 22 And when he came out, he could not speak unto them: and they perceived that he had seen a vision (3701) in the Temple: for He beckoned unto them, and remained speechless. 23 And it came to pass, that, as soon as the days of his ministration were accomplished, he departed to his own house. 24 And after those days his wife Elisabeth conceived, and hid herself five months, saying, 25 “Thus hath the LORD dealt with me in the days wherein he looked on me, to take away my reproach among men.” Peter’s and James’ Vision (The Transfiguration) Matthew 17:1–12: 1 And after six days Jesus taketh Peter, James, and John his brother, and bringeth them up into an high mountain apart, 2 And was transfigured before them: and His face did shine as the sun, and His raiment was white as the light. 3 And, behold, there appeared unto

them Moses and Elias talking with Him. 4 Then answered Peter, and said unto Jesus, “Lord, it is good for us to be here: if Thou wilt, let us make here three tabernacles; one for Thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias.” 5 While he yet spake, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them: and behold a voice out of the cloud, which said, “This is My beloved Son, in Whom I am well pleased; hear ye Him.” 6 And when the disciples heard it, they fell on their face, and were sore afraid. 7 And Jesus came and touched them, and said, “Arise, and be not afraid.” 8 And when they had lifted up their eyes, they saw no man, save Jesus only. 9 And as they came down from the mountain, Jesus charged them, saying, “Tell the vision (3705) to no man, until the Son of man be risen again from the dead.” 10 And His disciples asked Him, saying, “Why then say the scribes that Elias must first come?” 11 And Jesus answered and said unto them, “Elias truly shall first come, and restore all things. 12 But I say unto you, That Elias is come already, and they knew him not, but have done unto him whatsoever they listed. Likewise shall also the Son of man suffer of them.” 13 Then the disciples understood that He spake unto them of John the Baptist. Certain Women’s Visions of Angels Luke 24:13–35: 13 And, behold, two of them went that same day to a village called Emmaus, which was from Jerusalem about threescore furlongs. 14 And they talked together of all these things which had happened. 15 And it came to pass, that, while they communed together and reasoned, Jesus Himself drew near, and went with them. 16 But their eyes were holden that they should not know Him. 17 And He said unto them, “What manner of communications are these that ye have one to another, as ye walk, and are sad?” 18 And the one of them, whose name was Cleopas, answering said unto Him, “Art Thou only a stranger in Jerusalem, and hast not known the things which are come to pass there in these days?” 19 And He said unto them, “What things?” And they said unto Him, “Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, Which was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people: 20 And how the chief priests and our rulers delivered Him to be condemned to death, and have crucified Him. 21 But we trusted that it had been He Which should have redeemed Israel: and beside all this, to day is the third day since these things were done. 22 Yea, and certain women also of our company made us astonished, which were early at the sepulchre; 23 And when they found not His body, they came, saying, that they had also seen a vision (3701) of angels, which said that He was alive. 24 And certain of them which were with us went to the sepulchre, and found it even so as the women had said: but Him they saw not. 25 Then He said unto them, “O fools, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken: 26 Ought not Christ to have suffered these things, and to enter into His glory?” 27 And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, He expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning Himself. 28 And they drew nigh unto the village, whither they went: and He made as though He would have gone further. 29 But they constrained Him, saying, “Abide with us: for it is toward evening, and the day is far spent.” And He went in to tarry with them. 30 And it came to pass, as He sat at meat with them, He took bread, and blessed it, and brake, and gave to them. 31 And their eyes were opened, and they knew Him; and He vanished out of their sight. 32 And they said one to another, “Did not our heart burn within us, while He talked with us by the way, and while He opened to us the scriptures?” 33 And they rose up the same hour, and returned to Jerusalem, and found the eleven gathered together, and them that were with them, 34 Saying, “The Lord is risen indeed, and hath appeared to Simon.” 35 And they told what things were done in the way, and how He was known of them in breaking of bread. Paul’s Vision Acts 9:1–9: 1 And Saul, yet breathing out threatenings and slaughter against the disciples of the Lord, went unto the high priest, 2 And desired of him letters to Damascus to the synagogues, that

if he found any of this way, whether they were men or women, he might bring them bound unto Jerusalem. 3 And as he journeyed, he came near Damascus: and suddenly there shined round about him a light from heaven: 4 And he fell to the earth, and heard a voice saying unto him, “Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou Me?” 5 And he said, “Who art Thou, Lord?” And the Lord said, “I am Jesus Whom thou persecutest: it is hard for thee to kick against the pricks.” 6 And he trembling and astonished said, “Lord, what wilt Thou have me to do?” And the Lord said unto him, “Arise, and go into the city, and it shall be told thee what thou must do.” 7 And the men which journeyed with him stood speechless, hearing a voice, but seeing no man. 8 And Saul arose from the earth; and when his eyes were opened, he saw no man: but they led him by the hand, and brought him into Damascus. 9 And he was three days without sight, and neither did eat nor drink. Ananias’ Vision Acts 9:10–22: 10 And there was a certain disciple at Damascus, named Ananias; and to him said the Lord in a vision (3705), “Ananias.” And he said, “Behold, I am here, Lord.” 11 And the Lord said unto him, “Arise, and go into the street which is called Straight, and enquire in the house of Judas for one called Saul, of Tarsus: for, behold, he prayeth, 12 And hath seen in a vision (3705) a man named Ananias coming in, and putting his hand on him, that he might receive his sight.” 13 Then Ananias answered, “Lord, I have heard by many of this man, how much evil he hath done to Thy saints at Jerusalem: 14 And here he hath authority from the chief priests to bind all that call on Thy name.” 15 But the Lord said unto him, “Go thy way: for he is a chosen vessel unto Me, to bear My name before the Gentiles, and kings, and the children of Israel: 16 For I will shew him how great things he must suffer for My name’s sake. 17 And Ananias went his way, and entered into the house; and putting his hands on him said, “Brother Saul, the Lord, even Jesus, That appeared unto thee in the way as thou camest, hath sent me, that thou mightest receive thy sight, and be filled with the Holy Ghost.” 18 And immediately there fell from his eyes as it had been scales: and he received sight forthwith, and arose, and was baptized. 19 And when he had received meat, he was strengthened. Then was Saul certain days with the disciples which were at Damascus. 20 And straightway he preached Christ in the synagogues, that he is the Son of God. 21 But all that heard him were amazed, and said; “Is not this he that destroyed them which called on this name in Jerusalem, and came hither for that intent, that he might bring them bound unto the chief priests?” 22 But Saul increased the more in strength, and confounded the Jews which dwelt at Damascus, proving that this is very Christ. Cornelius’ Vision Acts 10:1–44: 1 There was a certain man in Caesarea called Cornelius, a centurion of the band called the Italian band, 2 A devout man, and one that feared God with all his house, which gave much alms to the people, and prayed to God alway. 3 He saw in a vision (3705) evidently about the ninth hour of the day an angel of God coming in to him, and saying unto him, “Cornelius.” 4 And when he looked on him, he was afraid, and said, “What is it, Lord?” And He said unto him, “Thy prayers and thine alms are come up for a memorial before God. 5 And now send men to Joppa, and call for one Simon, whose surname is Peter: 6 He lodgeth with one Simon a tanner, whose house is by the sea side: he shall tell thee what thou oughtest to do.” 7 And when the angel which spake unto Cornelius was departed, he called two of his household servants, and a devout soldier of them that waited on him continually; 8 And when he had declared all these things unto them, he sent them to Joppa. 9 On the morrow, as they went on their journey, and drew nigh unto the city, Peter went up upon the housetop to pray about the sixth hour: 10 And he became very hungry, and would have eaten: but while they made ready, he fell into a trance, 11 And saw heaven opened, and a certain vessel descending unto him, as it had been a great sheet

knit at the four corners, and let down to the earth: 12 Wherein were all manner of fourfooted beasts of the earth, and wild beasts, and creeping things, and fowls of the air. 13 And there came a voice to him, “Rise, Peter; kill, and eat.” 14 But Peter said, “Not so, Lord; for I have never eaten any thing that is common or unclean.” 15 And the voice spake unto him again the second time, “What God hath cleansed, that call not thou common.” 16 This was done thrice: and the vessel was received up again into heaven. 17 Now while Peter doubted in himself what this vision which he had seen should mean, behold, the men which were sent from Cornelius had made enquiry for Simon’s house, and stood before the gate, 18 And called, and asked whether Simon, which was surnamed Peter, were lodged there. 19 While Peter thought on the vision (3705), the Spirit said unto him, “Behold, three men seek thee. 20 Arise therefore, and get thee down, and go with them, doubting nothing: for I have sent them.” 21 Then Peter went down to the men which were sent unto him from Cornelius; and said, “Behold, I am he whom ye seek: what is the cause wherefore ye are come? 22 And they said, Cornelius the centurion, a just man, and one that feareth God, and of good report among all the nation of the Jews, was warned from God by an holy angel to send for thee into his house, and to hear words of thee.” 23 Then called he them in, and lodged them. And on the morrow Peter went away with them, and certain brethren from Joppa accompanied him. 24 And the morrow after they entered into Caesarea. And Cornelius waited for them, and had called together his kinsmen and near friends. 25 And as Peter was coming in, Cornelius met him, and fell down at his feet, and worshipped him. 26 But Peter took him up, saying, “Stand up; I myself also am a man.” 27 And as he talked with him, he went in, and found many that were come together. 28 And he said unto them, “Ye know how that it is an unlawful thing for a man that is a Jew to keep company, or come unto one of another nation; but God hath shewed me that I should not call any man common or unclean. 29 Therefore came I unto you without gainsaying, as soon as I was sent for: I ask therefore for what intent ye have sent for me?” 30 And Cornelius said, “Four days ago I was fasting until this hour; and at the ninth hour I prayed in my house, and, behold, a man stood before me in bright clothing, 31 And said, ‘Cornelius, thy prayer is heard, and thine alms are had in remembrance in the sight of God. 32 Send therefore to Joppa, and call hither Simon, whose surname is Peter; he is lodged in the house of one Simon a tanner by the sea side: who, when he cometh, shall speak unto thee.’ 33 Immediately therefore I sent to thee; and thou hast well done that thou art come. Now therefore are we all here present before God, to hear all things that are commanded thee of God.” 34 Then Peter opened his mouth, and said, “Of a truth I perceive that God is no respecter of persons: 35 But in every nation he that feareth Him, and worketh righteousness, is accepted with Him. 36 The word which God sent unto the children of Israel, preaching peace by Jesus Christ: (he is Lord of all:) 37 That word, I say, ye know, which was published throughout all Judaea, and began from Galilee, after the baptism which John preached; 38 How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with Him. 39 And we are witnesses of all things which He did both in the land of the Jews, and in Jerusalem; whom they slew and hanged on a tree: 40 Him God raised up the third day, and shewed him openly; 41 Not to all the people, but unto witnesses chosen before of God, even to us, who did eat and drink with him after he rose from the dead. 42 And He commanded us to preach unto the people, and to testify that it is He Which was ordained of God to be the Judge of quick and dead. 43 To Him give all the prophets witness, that through His name whosoever believeth in Him shall receive remission of sins.” 44 While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the word. 45 And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost. 46 For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God. Then answered Peter, 47 “Can any man forbid water, that these should not be baptized, which have received the Holy Ghost as well as we?” 48 And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord. Then prayed they him to tarry certain

days. Peter’s Vision Acts 11:1–18: 1 And the apostles and brethren that were in Judaea heard that the Gentiles had also received the word of God. 2 And when Peter was come up to Jerusalem, they that were of the circumcision contended with him, 3 Saying, “Thou wentest in to men uncircumcised, and didst eat with them.” 4 But Peter rehearsed the matter from the beginning, and expounded it by order unto them, saying, 5 “I was in the city of Joppa praying: and in a trance I saw a vision (3705), A certain vessel descend, as it had been a great sheet, let down from heaven by four corners; and it came even to me: 6 Upon the which when I had fastened mine eyes, I considered, and saw fourfooted beasts of the earth, and wild beasts, and creeping things, and fowls of the air. 7 And I heard a voice saying unto me, ‘Arise, Peter; slay and eat.’ 8 But I said, ‘Not so, Lord: for nothing common or unclean hath at any time entered into my mouth.’ 9 But the voice answered me again from heaven, ‘What God hath cleansed, that call not thou common.’ 10 And this was done three times: and all were drawn up again into heaven. 11 And, behold, immediately there were three men already come unto the house where I was, sent from Caesarea unto me. 12 And the Spirit bade me go with them, nothing doubting. Moreover these six brethren accompanied me, and we entered into the man’s house: 13 And he shewed us how he had seen an angel in his house, which stood and said unto him, ‘Send men to Joppa, and call for Simon, whose surname is Peter; 14 Who shall tell thee words, whereby thou and all thy house shall be saved.’ 15 And as I began to speak, the Holy Ghost fell on them, as on us at the beginning. 16 Then remembered I the word of the Lord, how that He said, ‘John indeed baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost.’ 17 Forasmuch then as God gave them the like gift as He did unto us, who believed on the Lord Jesus Christ; what was I, that I could withstand God?” 18 When they heard these things, they held their peace, and glorified God, saying, “Then hath God also to the Gentiles granted repentance unto life.” Paul’s Vision Acts 16:6–15: 6 Now when they had gone throughout Phrygia and the region of Galatia, and were forbidden of the Holy Ghost to preach the word in Asia, 7 After they were come to Mysia, they assayed to go into Bithynia: but the Spirit suffered them not. 8 And they passing by Mysia came down to Troas. 9 And a vision (3705) appeared to Paul in the night; There stood a man of Macedonia, and prayed him, saying, “Come over into Macedonia, and help us.” 10 And after he had seen the vision (3705), immediately we endeavoured to go into Macedonia, assuredly gathering that the Lord had called us for to preach the gospel unto them. 11 Therefore loosing from Troas, we came with a straight course to Samothracia, and the next day to Neapolis; 12 And from thence to Philippi, which is the chief city of that part of Macedonia, and a colony: and we were in that city abiding certain days. 13 And on the sabbath we went out of the city by a river side, where prayer was wont to be made; and we sat down, and spake unto the women which resorted thither. 14 And a certain woman named Lydia, a seller of purple, of the city of Thyatira, which worshipped God, heard us: whose heart the Lord opened, that she attended unto the things which were spoken of Paul. 15 And when she was baptized, and her household, she besought us, saying, “If ye have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, come into my house, and abide there.” And she constrained us. Paul’s Vision Acts 18:7–11: 7 And he departed thence, and entered into a certain man's house, named Justus,

one that worshipped God, whose house joined hard to the synagogue. 8 And Crispus, the chief ruler of the synagogue, believed on the Lord with all his house; and many of the Corinthians hearing believed, and were baptized. 9 Then spake the Lord to Paul in the night by a vision (3705), “Be not afraid, but speak, and hold not thy peace: 10 For I am with thee, and no man shall set on thee to hurt thee: for I have much people in this city.” 11 And he continued there a year and six months, teaching the word of God among them. Acts 26:12–23: 12 Whereupon as I went to Damascus with authority and commission from the chief priests, 13 At midday, O king, I saw in the way a light from heaven, above the brightness of the sun, shining round about me and them which journeyed with me. 14 And when we were all fallen to the earth, I heard a voice speaking unto me, and saying in the Hebrew tongue, ‘Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou Me? it is hard for thee to kick against the pricks.’ 15 And I said, ‘Who art Thou, Lord?’ And He said, ‘I am Jesus Whom thou persecutest. 16 But rise, and stand upon thy feet: for I have appeared unto thee for this purpose, to make thee a minister and a witness both of these things which thou hast seen, and of those things in the which I will appear unto thee; 17 Delivering thee from the people, and from the Gentiles, unto whom now I send thee, 18 To open their eyes, and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and inheritance among them which are sanctified by faith that is in Me.’ 19 Whereupon, O king Agrippa, I was not disobedient unto the heavenly vision (3705): 20 But shewed first unto them of Damascus, and at Jerusalem, and throughout all the coasts of Judaea, and then to the Gentiles, that they should repent and turn to God, and do works meet for repentance. 21 For these causes the Jews caught me in the temple, and went about to kill me. 22 Having therefore obtained help of God, I continue unto this day, witnessing both to small and great, saying none other things than those which the prophets and Moses did say should come: 23 That Christ should suffer, and that He should be the first that should rise from the dead, and should shew light unto the people, and to the Gentiles.” Visions of the Prophets II Chronicles 9:29: 29 Now the rest of the acts of Solomon, first and last, are they not written in the book of Nathan the prophet, and in the prophecy of Ahijah the Shilonite, and in the visions (2378) of Iddo the seer against Jeroboam the son of Nebat? 30 And Solomon reigned in Jerusalem over all Israel forty years. 31 And Solomon slept with his fathers, and he was buried in the city of David his father: and Rehoboam his son reigned in his stead. II Chronicles 32:32–33: 32 Now the rest of the acts of Hezekiah, and his goodness, behold, they are written in the vision (2377) of Isaiah the prophet, the son of Amoz, and in the book of the kings of Judah and Israel. 33 And Hezekiah slept with his fathers, and they buried him in the chiefest of the sepulchres of the sons of David: and all Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem did him honour at his death. And Manasseh his son reigned in his stead. Isaiah 1:1: The vision (2377)* of Isaiah the son of Amoz, which he saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem in the days of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah, kings of Judah. *Bullinger says this is the title of the entire book. Thus God revealed all of the prophecies Isaiah recorded to him in this manner. Obadiah 1: The vision (2377) of Obadiah. Nahum 1: 1 The burden of Nineveh. The book of the vision (2377) of Nahum the Elkoshite.

Habakkuk 2:1–4: 1 I will stand upon my watch, and set me upon the tower, and will watch to see what He will say unto me, and what I shall answer when I am reproved. 2 And the LORD answered me, and said, “Write the vision (2377), and make it plain upon tables, that he may run that readeth it. 3 For the vision (2377) is yet for an appointed time, but at the end it shall speak, and not lie: though it tarry, wait for it; because it will surely come, it will not tarry.” 4 Behold, his soul which is lifted up is not upright in him: but the just shall live by his faith. Isaiah 21:1–2: 1 The burden of the desert of the sea. As whirlwinds in the south pass through; so it cometh from the desert, from a terrible land. 2 A grievous vision (2380) is declared unto me; the treacherous dealer dealeth treacherously, and the spoiler spoileth. Go up, O Elam: besiege, O Media; all the sighing thereof have I made to cease. Isaiah 22:1–7: 1 The burden of the valley of vision (2384). What aileth thee now, that thou art wholly gone up to the housetops? 2 Thou that art full of stirs, a tumultuous city, a joyous city: thy slain men are not slain with the sword, nor dead in battle. 3 All thy rulers are fled together, they are bound by the archers: all that are found in thee are bound together, which have fled from far. 4 Therefore said I, “Look away from me; I will weep bitterly, labour not to comfort me, because of the spoiling of the daughter of my people.” 5 For it is a day of trouble, and of treading down, and of perplexity by the Lord GOD of hosts in the valley of vision (2384), breaking down the walls, and of crying to the mountains. 6 And Elam bare the quiver with chariots of men and horsemen, and Kir uncovered the shield. 7 And it shall come to pass, that thy choicest valleys shall be full of chariots, and the horsemen shall set themselves in array at the gate. Ezekiel’s Visions Ezekiel 1:1–3: 1 Now it came to pass in the thirtieth year, in the fourth month, in the fifth day of the month, as I was among the captives by the river of Chebar, that the heavens were opened, and I saw visions (4759) of God. 2 In the fifth day of the month, which was the fifth year of king Jehoiachin's captivity, 3 The word of the LORD came expressly unto Ezekiel the priest, the son of Buzi, in the land of the Chaldeans by the river Chebar; and the hand of the LORD was there upon him. Ezekiel 8:1–6: 1 And it came to pass in the sixth year, in the sixth month, in the fifth day of the month, as I sat in mine house, and the elders of Judah sat before me, that the hand of the Lord GOD fell there upon me. 2 Then I beheld, and lo a likeness as the appearance of fire: from the appearance of his loins even downward, fire; and from his loins even upward, as the appearance of brightness, as the colour of amber. 3 And he put forth the form of an hand, and took me by a lock of mine head; and the spirit lifted me up between the earth and the heaven, and brought me in the visions (4759) of God to Jerusalem, to the door of the inner gate that looketh toward the north; where was the seat of the image of jealousy, which provoketh to jealousy. 4 And, behold, the glory of the God of Israel was there, according to the vision (4758) that I saw in the plain. 5 Then said he unto me, Son of man, lift up thine eyes now the way toward the north. So I lifted up mine eyes the way toward the north, and behold northward at the gate of the altar this image of jealousy in the entry. 6 He said furthermore unto me, Son of man, seest thou what they do? even the great abominations that the house of Israel committeth here, that I should go far off from my sanctuary? but turn thee yet again, and thou shalt see greater abominations. Ezekiel 11:24–25: 24 Afterwards the spirit took me up, and brought me in a vision (4758) by the Spirit of God into Chaldea, to them of the captivity. So the vision that I had seen went up from me. 25 Then I spake unto them of the captivity all the things that the LORD had shewed me.

Ezekiel 13:15–16: 15 Thus will I accomplish My wrath upon the wall, and upon them that have daubed it with untempered morter, and will say unto you, ‘The wall is no more, neither they that daubed it; 16 To wit, the prophets of Israel which prophesy concerning Jerusalem, and which see visions of peace for her, and there is no peace, saith the Lord GOD. Ezekiel 40:1–4: 1 In the five and twentieth year of our captivity, in the beginning of the year, in the tenth day of the month, in the fourteenth year after that the city was smitten, in the selfsame day the hand of the LORD was upon me, and brought me thither. 2 In the visions (4759) of God brought He me into the land of Israel, and set me upon a very high mountain, by which was as the frame of a city on the south. 3 And He brought me thither, and, behold, there was a man, whose appearance was like the appearance of brass, with a line of flax in his hand, and a measuring reed; and he stood in the gate. 4 And the man said unto me, “Son of man, behold with thine eyes, and hear with thine ears, and set thine heart upon all that I shall shew thee; for to the intent that I might shew them unto thee art thou brought hither: declare all that thou seest to the house of Israel.” Ezekiel 43:1–6: 1 Afterward he brought me to the gate, even the gate that looketh toward the east: 2 And, behold, the glory of the God of Israel came from the way of the east: and His voice was like a noise of many waters: and the earth shined with His glory. 3 And it was according to the appearance of the vision (4758) which I saw, even according to the vision (4757) that I saw when I came to destroy the city: and the visions (4759) were like the vision (4758) that I saw by the river Chebar; and I fell upon my face. 4 And the glory of the LORD came into the house by the way of the gate whose prospect is toward the east. 5 So the spirit took me up, and brought me into the inner court; and, behold, the glory of the LORD filled the house. 6 And I heard Him speaking unto me out of the house; and the man stood by me. Daniel’s Visions Daniel 7:1–6:1 In the first year of Belshazzar king of Babylon Daniel had a dream (2493) and visions of his head upon his bed: then he wrote the dream (2493), and told the sum of the matters. 2 Daniel spake and said, “I saw in my vision by night, and, behold, the four winds of the heaven strove upon the great sea. 3 And four great beasts came up from the sea, diverse one from another. 4 The first was like a lion, and had eagle’s wings: I beheld till the wings thereof were plucked, and it was lifted up from the earth, and made stand upon the feet as a man, and a man’s heart was given to it. 5 And behold another beast, a second, like to a bear, and it raised up itself on one side, and it had three ribs in the mouth of it between the teeth of it: and they said thus unto it, ‘Arise, devour much flesh.’ 6 After this I beheld, and lo another, like a leopard, which had upon the back of it four wings of a fowl; the beast had also four heads; and dominion was given to it. Daniel 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 all record Daniel’s visions John’s Vision Revelation 9:13–21: 13 And the sixth angel sounded, and I heard a voice from the four horns of the golden altar which is before God, 14 Saying to the sixth angel which had the trumpet, “Loose the four angels which are bound in the great river Euphrates.” 15 And the four angels were loosed, which were prepared for an hour, and a day, and a month, and a year, for to slay the third part of men. 16 And the number of the army of the horsemen were two hundred thousand thousand: and I heard the number of them. 17 And thus I saw the horses in the vision (3706), and

them that sat on them, having breastplates of fire, and of jacinth, and brimstone: and the heads of the horses were as the heads of lions; and out of their mouths issued fire and smoke and brimstone. 18 By these three was the third part of men killed, by the fire, and by the smoke, and by the brimstone, which issued out of their mouths. 19 For their power is in their mouth, and in their tails: for their tails were like unto serpents, and had heads, and with them they do hurt. 20 And the rest of the men which were not killed by these plagues yet repented not of the works of their hands, that they should not worship devils, and idols of gold, and silver, and brass, and stone, and of wood: which neither can see, nor hear, nor walk: 21 Neither repented they of their murders, nor of their sorceries, nor of their fornication, nor of their thefts. Generic References to Visions There are both positive and negative references to visions and seers of visions in the Bible. Positive Numbers 12:5–9: 5 And the LORD came down in the pillar of the cloud, and stood in the door of the tabernacle, and called Aaron and Miriam: and they both came forth. 6 And He said, “Hear now My words: If there be a prophet among you, I the LORD will make Myself known unto him in a vision (4758), and will speak unto him in a dream (2472). 7 My servant Moses is not so, who is faithful in all Mine house. 8 With him will I speak mouth to mouth, even apparently, and not in dark speeches; and the similitude of the LORD shall he behold: wherefore then were ye not afraid to speak against My servant Moses?” 9 And the anger of the LORD was kindled against them; and He departed. II Chronicles 26:1–5: 1 Then all the people of Judah took Uzziah, who was sixteen years old, and made him king in the room of his father Amaziah. 2 He built Eloth, and restored it to Judah, after that the king slept with his fathers. 3 Sixteen years old was Uzziah when he began to reign, and he reigned fifty and two years in Jerusalem. His mother's name also was Jecoliah of Jerusalem. 4 And he did that which was right in the sight of the LORD , according to all that his father Amaziah did. 5 And he sought God in the days of Zechariah, who had understanding in the visions (7200) of God: and as long as he sought the LORD , God made him to prosper. Daniel 1:17: 17 As for these four children, God gave them knowledge and skill in all learning and wisdom: and Daniel had understanding in all visions (2377) and dreams (2472). Joel 2:28: 28 And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out My spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream (2492) dreams (2472), your young men shall see visions (2384): Acts 2:17: 17 ‘And it shall come to pass in the last days,’ saith God, ‘I will pour out of My Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions (2706), and your old men shall dream (1798) dreams (1797): II Corinthians 12:1–10: 1 It is not expedient for me doubtless to glory. I will come to visions (3701) and revelations of the Lord. 2 I knew a man in Christ above fourteen years ago, (whether in the body, I cannot tell; or whether out of the body, I cannot tell: God knoweth;) such an one caught up to the third heaven. 3 And I knew such a man, (whether in the body, or out of the body, I cannot tell: God knoweth;) 4 How that he was caught up into paradise, and heard unspeakable words, which it is not lawful for a man to utter. 5 Of such an one will I glory: yet of myself I will not glory,

but in mine infirmities. 6 For though I would desire to glory, I shall not be a fool; for I will say the truth: but now I forbear, lest any man should think of me above that which he seeth me to be, or that he heareth of me. 7 And lest I should be exalted above measure through the abundance of the revelations, there was given to me a thorn in the flesh, the messenger of Satan to buffet me, lest I should be exalted above measure. 8 For this thing I besought the Lord thrice, that it might depart from me. 9 And He said unto me, “My grace is sufficient for thee: for My strength is made perfect in weakness.” Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. 10 Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses for Christ’s sake: for when I am weak, then am I strong. Negative Job 4:12–14: 12 Now a thing was secretly brought to me, and mine ear received a little thereof. 13 In thoughts from the visions (2384) of the night, when deep sleep falleth on men, 14 Fear came upon me, and trembling, which made all my bones to shake. Psalm 89:19–20: 19 Then thou spakest in vision (2377) to Thy Holy One, and saidst, I have laid help upon one that is mighty; I have exalted one chosen out of the people. 20 I have found David My servant; with My holy oil have I anointed him: 21 With whom My hand shall be established: Mine arm also shall strengthen him. Proverbs 29:18: 18 Where there is no vision (2377), the people perish: but he that keepeth the law, happy is he. Isaiah 28:7: 7 But they also have erred through wine, and through strong drink are out of the way; the priest and the prophet have erred through strong drink, they are swallowed up of wine, they are out of the way through strong drink; they err in vision (7203), they stumble in judgment. Isaiah 29:7: 7 And the multitude of all the nations that fight against Ariel, even all that fight against her and her munition, and that distress her, shall be as a dream (2472) of a night vision (2377). Isaiah 29:11: 11 And the vision (2380) of all is become unto you as the words of a book that is sealed, which men deliver to one that is learned, saying, “Read this, I pray thee:” and he saith, “I cannot; for it is sealed:” 12 And the book is delivered to him that is not learned, saying, “Read this, I pray thee:” and he saith, “I am not learned.” Jeremiah 14:10–16: 10 Thus saith the LORD unto this people, “Thus have they loved to wander, they have not refrained their feet, therefore the LORD doth not accept them; He will now remember their iniquity, and visit their sins.” 11 Then said the LORD unto me, “Pray not for this people for their good. 12 When they fast, I will not hear their cry; and when they offer burnt offering and an oblation, I will not accept them: but I will consume them by the sword, and by the famine, and by the pestilence.” 13 Then said I, “Ah, Lord GOD! behold, the prophets say unto them, ‘Ye shall not see the sword, neither shall ye have famine; but I will give you assured peace in this place.’” 14 Then the LORD said unto me, “The prophets prophesy lies in My name: I sent them not, neither have I commanded them, neither spake unto them: they prophesy unto you a false vision (2377) and divination, and a thing of nought, and the deceit of their heart. 15 Therefore thus saith the LORD concerning the prophets that prophesy in My name, and I sent them not, yet they say, ‘Sword and famine shall not be in this land; By sword and famine shall those prophets be consumed.’ 16 And the people to whom they prophesy shall be cast out in the

streets of Jerusalem because of the famine and the sword; and they shall have none to bury them, them, their wives, nor their sons, nor their daughters: for I will pour their wickedness upon them. Jeremiah 23:16: 16 Thus saith the LORD of hosts, ‘Hearken not unto the words of the prophets that prophesy unto you: they make you vain: they speak a vision (2377) of their own heart, and not out of the mouth of the LORD . Lamentations 2:9: 9 Her gates are sunk into the ground; he hath destroyed and broken her bars: her king and her princes are among the Gentiles: the law is no more; her prophets also find no vision (2377) from the LORD . Ezekiel 7:1–27: 1 Moreover the word of the LORD came unto me, saying, 2 “Also, thou son of man, thus saith the Lord GOD unto the land of Israel; ‘An end, the end is come upon the four corners of the land. 3 Now is the end come upon thee, and I will send Mine anger upon thee, and will judge thee according to thy ways, and will recompense upon thee all thine abominations. 4 And Mine eye shall not spare thee, neither will I have pity: but I will recompense thy ways upon thee, and thine abominations shall be in the midst of thee: and ye shall know that I am the LORD .’ 5 Thus saith the Lord GOD; ‘An evil, an only evil, behold, is come. 6 An end is come, the end is come: it watcheth for thee; behold, it is come. 7 The morning is come unto thee, O thou that dwellest in the land: the time is come, the day of trouble is near, and not the sounding again of the mountains. 8 Now will I shortly pour out My fury upon thee, and accomplish Mine anger upon thee: and I will judge thee according to thy ways, and will recompense thee for all thine abominations. 9 And Mine eye shall not spare, neither will I have pity: I will recompense thee according to thy ways and thine abominations that are in the midst of thee; and ye shall know that I am the LORD That smiteth. 10 Behold the day, behold, it is come: the morning is gone forth; the rod hath blossomed, pride hath budded. 11 Violence is risen up into a rod of wickedness: none of them shall remain, nor of their multitude, nor of any of theirs: neither shall there be wailing for them. 12 The time is come, the day draweth near: let not the buyer rejoice, nor the seller mourn: for wrath is upon all the multitude thereof. 13 For the seller shall not return to that which is sold, although they were yet alive: for the vision (2377) is touching the whole multitude thereof, which shall not return; neither shall any strengthen himself in the iniquity of his life. 14 They have blown the trumpet, even to make all ready; but none goeth to the battle: for My wrath is upon all the multitude thereof. 15 The sword is without, and the pestilence and the famine within: he that is in the field shall die with the sword; and he that is in the city, famine and pestilence shall devour him. 16 But they that escape of them shall escape, and shall be on the mountains like doves of the valleys, all of them mourning, every one for his iniquity. 17 All hands shall be feeble, and all knees shall be weak as water. 18 They shall also gird themselves with sackcloth, and horror shall cover them; and shame shall be upon all faces, and baldness upon all their heads. 19 They shall cast their silver in the streets, and their gold shall be removed: their silver and their gold shall not be able to deliver them in the day of the wrath of the LORD : they shall not satisfy their souls, neither fill their bowels: because it is the stumblingblock of their iniquity. 20 As for the beauty of His ornament, He set it in majesty: but they made the images of their abominations and of their detestable things therein: therefore have I set it far from them. 21 And I will give it into the hands of the strangers for a prey, and to the wicked of the earth for a spoil; and they shall pollute it. 22 My face will I turn also from them, and they shall pollute My secret place: for the robbers shall enter into it, and defile it. 23 Make a chain: for the land is full of bloody crimes, and the city is full of violence. 24 Wherefore I will bring the worst of the heathen, and they shall possess their houses: I will also make the pomp of the strong to cease; and their holy places shall be defiled. 25 Destruction cometh; and they shall seek peace, and there shall be none. 26 Mischief shall

come upon mischief, and rumour shall be upon rumour; then shall they seek a vision (2377) of the prophet; but the law shall perish from the priest, and counsel from the ancients. 27 The king shall mourn, and the prince shall be clothed with desolation, and the hands of the people of the land shall be troubled: I will do unto them after their way, and according to their deserts will I judge them; and they shall know that I am the LORD . Ezekiel 12:21–13:9: 21 And the word of the LORD came unto me, saying, 22 “Son of man, what is that proverb that ye have in the land of Israel, saying, ‘The days are prolonged, and every vision (2377) faileth?’ 23 Tell them therefore, ‘Thus saith the Lord GOD; ‘I will make this proverb to cease, and they shall no more use it as a proverb in Israel; but say unto them, ‘The days are at hand, and the effect of every vision (2377). 24 For there shall be no more any vain vision (2377) nor flattering divination within the house of Israel. 25 For I am the LORD : I will speak, and the word that I shall speak shall come to pass; it shall be no more prolonged: for in your days, O rebellious house, will I say the word, and will perform it, saith the Lord GOD.” 26 Again the word of the LORD came to me, saying, 27 “Son of man, behold, they of the house of Israel say, The vision (2377) that he seeth is for many days to come, and he prophesieth of the times that are far off.’ 28 Therefore say unto them, ‘Thus saith the Lord GOD; ‘There shall none of My words be prolonged any more, but the word which I have spoken shall be done, saith the Lord GOD . 1 And the word of the LORD came unto me, saying, 2 “Son of man, prophesy against the prophets of Israel that prophesy, and say thou unto them that prophesy out of their own hearts, ‘Hear ye the word of the LORD ; 3 Thus saith the Lord GOD; ‘Woe unto the foolish prophets, that follow their own spirit, and have seen nothing! 4 O Israel, thy prophets are like the foxes in the deserts. 5 Ye have not gone up into the gaps, neither made up the hedge for the house of Israel to stand in the battle in the day of the LORD . 6 They have seen vanity and lying divination, saying, ‘The LORD saith:’ and the LORD hath not sent them: and they have made others to hope that they would confirm the word. 7 Have ye not seen a vain vision (4236), and have ye not spoken a lying divination, whereas ye say, ‘The LORD saith it;’ albeit I have not spoken? 8 Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD; ‘Because ye have spoken vanity, and seen lies, therefore, behold, I am against you, saith the Lord GOD. 9 And Mine hand shall be upon the prophets that see vanity, and that divine lies: they shall not be in the assembly of My people, neither shall they be written in the writing of the house of Israel, neither shall they enter into the land of Israel; and ye shall know that I am the Lord GOD. Hosea 12:7–14: 7 He is a merchant, the balances of deceit are in his hand: he loveth to oppress. 8 And Ephraim said, “Yet I am become rich, I have found me out substance: in all my labours they shall find none iniquity in me that were sin.” 9 And I That am the LORD thy God from the land of Egypt will yet make thee to dwell in tabernacles, as in the days of the solemn feast. 10 I have also spoken by the prophets, and I have multiplied visions (2377), and used similitudes, by the ministry of the prophets. 11 Is there iniquity in Gilead? surely they are vanity: they sacrifice bullocks in Gilgal; yea, their altars are as heaps in the furrows of the fields. 12 And Jacob fled into the country of Syria, and Israel served for a wife, and for a wife he kept sheep. 13 And by a prophet the LORD brought Israel out of Egypt, and by a prophet was he preserved. 14 Ephraim provoked Him to anger most bitterly: therefore shall He leave his blood upon him, and his reproach shall his LORD return unto him. Micah 3:1–7: 1 And I said, Hear, I pray you, O heads of Jacob, and ye princes of the house of Israel; Is it not for you to know judgment? 2 Who hate the good, and love the evil; who pluck off their skin from off them, and their flesh from off their bones; 3 Who also eat the flesh of My people, and flay their skin from off them; and they break their bones, and chop them in pieces, as for the pot, and as flesh within the caldron. 4 Then shall they cry unto the LORD , but He will not

hear them: He will even hide His face from them at that time, as they have behaved themselves ill in their doings. 5 Thus saith the LORD concerning the prophets that make My people err, that bite with their teeth, and cry, “Peace;” and he that putteth not into their mouths, they even prepare war against him. 6 “Therefore night shall be unto you, that ye shall not have a vision (2377); and it shall be dark unto you, that ye shall not divine; and the sun shall go down over the prophets, and the day shall be dark over them. 7 Then shall the seers be ashamed, and the diviners confounded: yea, they shall all cover their lips; for there is no answer of God.” Zechariah 13:1–6: 1 In that day there shall be a fountain opened to the house of David and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem for sin and for uncleanness. 2 And it shall come to pass in that day, saith the LORD of hosts, that I will cut off the names of the idols out of the land, and they shall no more be remembered: and also I will cause the prophets and the unclean spirit to pass out of the land. 3 And it shall come to pass, that when any shall yet prophesy, then his father and his mother that begat him shall say unto him, ‘Thou shalt not live; for thou speakest lies in the name of the LORD :’ and his father and his mother that begat him shall thrust him through when he prophesieth. 4 And it shall come to pass in that day, that the prophets shall be ashamed every one of his vision (2384), when he hath prophesied; neither shall they wear a rough garment to deceive: 5 But he shall say, I am no prophet, I am an husbandman; for man taught me to keep cattle from my youth.’ 6 And one shall say unto Him, ‘What are these wounds in Thine hands?’ Then He shall answer, ‘Those with which I was wounded in the house of My friends.’
