Vincent Van Gogh
Birth Place • Vincent Van Gogh was born in Holland
Family • His Dad was a minister and his Mam’s family were booksellers.
Career • After trying out some other careers first (art dealer, preacher), he decided to become an artist at the age of 27.
Paris • When he was 33, he moved to Paris to live with his brother. • Inspired by what he saw here, he lightened the colours used in his paintings.
Arles • After 2 years, he moved to Arles in the South of France. • During the 444 days spent in this town, Van Gogh produced over 200 paintings. • However, he had a breakdown in Arles, during which he cut off a part of his left ear with a razor.
• Afraid he would have another breakdown, Van Gogh entered an asylum near Arles. • There, during the next year, he made over 100 paintings.
Asylum
Auvers • He left the asylum when he was 37 and went to Auvers, where a doctor took care of him. • 2 months later, he attempted suicide by shooting himself in the chest in a wheat field. He died two days later.
Van Gogh and the World • Over the course of his 10 year career as a painter, Van Gogh produced nearly 900 paintings and over 1,100 drawings. • Today, he is considered one of the world’s most celebrated artists.
