Michel STRAUSS, cello 100 years ago, Edouard Maury, a clergyman, built a farm in Villefavard, devoted to modern agriculture. In 1947, his daughter, Juliette Ebersolt, created Villefavard spiritual concerts around the “Cavaillé-Coll” organ of the temple. A tradition was born. To continue this tradition, a new concert hall was inaugurated in 2002, in the barn of the farm. It is the first element of the actual Villefavard artistic meeting center (Centre de Rencontres Artistiques de Villefavard). Its aim is to offer to very high level artists a place to work, to share in a very peaceful country place and to offer to the public the result of this meetings.

Jérôme KALTENBACH, conductor, Annie BAUDKALTENBACH, mathematician, and Gilles EBERSOLT, architect, Villefavard Farm « fathers », have conceived an extraordinary international level musical tool in a huge farm in Limousin (a 100 meter square stage and 350 sitting places capacity) in a beautiful village perfect to concentrate, to work and to create. Albert YAYING XU, an acoustic specialist, used all knowledge and competence that made his notoriety around the world. After Shanghaï Opera, City of the Music in Paris, the Mstislav Rostropovitch’s « Grange » in Evian or the Copenhague Philharmony, he was also involved in the Villlefavard Farm creation. Because of its acoustic and its place, the Villefavard Farm is an exceptional and unique artistic place.

At the age of 14, he enters the Conservatoire de Paris, where he will win his first prizes in chamber music and cello under the guidance of Paul Tortelier and Maurice Gendron. He then pursues his studies in the United States at Yale University with Aldo Parisot. In 1980 he is appointed principal cello solo of the Nouvel Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France. In 1987 he takes over the class of Maurice Gendron at the Conservatoire de Paris. Considered as one of the most accomplished French musicians of his generation, he has worked with some of the most important contemporary music creators such as Luciano Berio, Maurice Béjart or Pierre Boulez and the legendary Sandor Vegh. Michel Strauss is the artistic director of the Normandy chamber music festival “Musique de chambre à Giverny”.
