INTRODUCTION Utility Fog– Concept by Dr. John Storrs Hall (Storrs Hall 2001). Consists of nanofoglets which fills the air like real foglets. Currently under development. Based on the concept of Molecular Nanotechnology.
NANOTECHNOLOGY Study of matter on an atomic or molecular scale. Molecular nanotechnology – devices or systems on molecular scale.
THE STUFF THAT DREAMS ARE MADE OF Looks like ordinary fog. Forms a swarm of distributed intelligence. Enables
- Creation - Levitation - Manipulation - Teleportation - Shape-Shifting
Contd....... Shape-shifting Furniture. Coating walls and Building floors. Rooms changing architecture. New car models and safe journey. Walking over water. Thin film of Nanobots – Video Screen. Done by the interlinking of foglets using their telescopic arms and strong grippers.
UTILITY FOGLETS Robotic cells or foglets- 100 microns. Equipped with high capability processing controller and electric motor. Spherical central body- 10 microns. 12 telescopic arms – 50 microns long and 5 microns in diameter.
Contd....... Arms swivel on universal joints at base– 4 degrees of freedom. 3 grippers on each arm for interconnection between foglets. Grippers rotate along the arm's axis.
TELESCOPIC ARMS
INTERLINKED FOGLETS Uses 6 arms for interlinking with neighbouring foglets.
INTERLINKING OF FOGLETS
FOG NETWORK
MODES OF OPERATION Native Mode Mobility concept :Individual foglets move into positions and perform mechanical operations as per the object they are forming. Eg: Table – solid and locked. Fan
– solid components with moving joints
Contd....... Fog Mode Static concept : Static foglets 'pixelate' to transmit information and sound. Eg: Display screens on immovable objects with 100 micron resolution, and greater processing power than a pc. Utility Fog – Transparent interface between cyberspace and physical reality.
FOGLETS IN DETAIL
FOGLETS - INTERNAL SCHEMATIC
Contd....... Rod logic - building computational systems using physical automata or more practical metal or plastic parts. Hydrogen Fuel Tank - Hydrogen ions combine with oxygen and the electrons to produce water. - Electrons flow out of the cell to be used as electrical energy.
GRIP - IN DETAIL
Contd....... Four basic components: Couplers Communication and Power Control. Optical Waveguide Communication from user. Power and Electrical Transmission lines Power Supply in the foglet. Grippers Locking foglets together.
COMMUNICATION AND CONTROL Command or instruction from the user are received. It is processed by the preprogrammed processors in the foglets. Calculations and analysis regarding the execution of the command are done. Eg: mode of operation, no: of foglets required, positions of each, and so on.
Contd....... Results are passed among other foglets. Required no: of Foglets arrange themselves at appropriate positions to form desired object. Functions instructed are performed, if any. End of usage - breaks up again and back to individual foglets.
FOGLETS – DESIGN ISSUES Two major issues - Building individually controllable, molecular-sized, physical actuators, arms, motors, gears and the like. - Building molecular-sized computers to control them. Transparency of a mass of foglets is almost equal to that of natural fog.
Contd....... Usage of Holographic goggles or contact lenses - to recognize it. Self-reproducing technology expected, to be economical – should be controllable. A trillion or quadrillion of foglets per house. Mass production– Cost be < $0.00000000001 apiece
PROPERTIES Self-Reproducing and Self-generating power. Initially designed with carbon crystals; contradiction with size and mechanical functionalities. So structural elements (exoskeleton) designed with aluminium oxide.
Contd....... Hydrogen fuel with water vapour as waste product. 700KW power consumed/cc for movement. 1m/sec absolute movement speed. 1000 psi tensile strength. Sustain 100m/s sheer per mm of thickness.
Contd....... Microcontroller is used. Individual foglets can communicate with each other. Can contract upto 40% in any linear direction reducing overall volume by a factor of 5. Specific gravity 0.2. Occupies 10% of the volume of air.
APPLICATIONS Shelter, clothing and communication. Space Researches - Pressure management in space suits. - No worries on floating off the ship. Shape shifting reduces wastage of space, enables efficient use of resources. Prevents micro-diseases. Life made easy.
LIMITATIONS Bigger than most nano-tech conceptions. Cannot simulate very hard metals. Lack of self-intelligence. Cannot handle anything requiring chemical reactions. Cannot form food or water. Cannot produce high temperature. Can be seen only using Holographic lens.
CONCLUSION Replacement for all different technologies around us. More compatible and sophisticated form expected. Such powers, as in magic, that we turn out to be witches and wizards. Wonder World making life easy and lazy.
