“Using Multiple Formations in the Wing-T” Chris Parker Offensive Coordinator Sequoyah High School Canton, GA

Multiple Formations in the Wing-T Philosophy: Many formations, few plays – Buck Sweep, Trap, Waggle, Belly, Rocket – Find a way to run these plays against each opponent
Advantages – Make the defense defend the entire field – Formations are limitless – be creative – Easy for players to remember if you keep integrity (T, R, L, Y, X). Make players remember what matters to them
Base Formation
• Double Wings (3 yards outside the tackle) • TE/SE opposite side • TB 4 yards behind the ball
Trips – X/Y on same side split
• Why use Trips? – Spread the Field – keep base philosophy – Get into Cover 3 for most teams
Unbalanced – X/Y same side
• Why use Unbalanced? – Change Tight Side Flank – Make defense have an adjustment
• Methods – Trade TE to unbalanced (avoid specific personnel) – Trade Back if defense is moving everyone
Dive – split side Wing in Dive
• Why use Dive? – Same as Base Formation w/ Strong Motion – Use if team is hurting play by reading motion – If over adjust to dive, run to split side
Spread – Tight side Wing in Dive
• Why use Spread? – Same as Base Formation w/ Split motion – Use if defense is keying motion on split side – Use to run belly game tite side without motion
Loose – both X/Y split out
• Why use Loose? – Make defense adjust to no TE set • If defense loosens – keep split side run game • If defense does not adjust – use passing game advantage
– If you want to run plays away from specific defender
Tite – both X/Y tite
• Why use Tite? – Get bubble vs. Even Fronts – Make their weak side play your strong side game – Power Formation
Wide – X/Y/R/L all spread Wide
• Why use Wide? – Not a typical Wing-T set – Make defense adjust
Pro – Tite Wing = Wide; Split Wing = Dive
• Why use Pro? – Spread field but keep 2 backs – Zoom motion w/ Wide Wing = same as Dive
Rifle – X/R/L all spread Wide
• Why use Rifle? – Spread field but keep base personnel – Widen weak side flank – Weak side = “Wide”; Strong side = “Pro”
Over – both X/Y on same side tight
• Why use Over? – Make the defense adjust • Try to out flank • Try to hit corner • If over-adjust, go away from over set
– Find bubbles
Empty – same as Trips w/ TB out
• Why use Empty? – Make defense adjust – 5 receivers in pass routes – Keep flank running game
Bunch – same as Trips but bunch
• Why use Bunch? – Passing Game could cause confusion for defense – Could be easier to outflank in bunch than trips – Isolate single receiver (wingback)
Compressed – same as Loose but Bunch
• Why use Compressed? – Defense could be outflanked easier than in Loose – Passing game confusion for defense
Thunder – X/Y = Tite; R/L = Wide
• Why use Thunder? – Keep “Tite” personnel but spread the field – Take advantage of bubbles in even fronts
