CREATING AND USING MACROS TO INCREASE YOUR PRODUCTIVITY
Using macros when typing medical transcription will increase your production without the need to type faster. This means less time spent sitting at your computer, less stress and strain on your body, and more money in your paycheck.
By following these simple guidelines and incorporating the macros provided in this book into your daily typing routine, you will increase your production by over 50 PERCENT!
You can never have too many macros. Anytime you type a word or phrase more than three times in one day, you need to make a macro for it. Use the pages provided at the back of this guide to list the macros you create. Keep this guide by your computer for reference until you begin to get familiar with the macros you have started using and in no time, using the macros will become habit and you will start seeing your production rate increase.

12 TIPS FOR CREATING MACROS
1.
The simplest and most common way to make a macro is to use the first letter of each word. Leave out words such as a, the, and, etc. Example: hrrr/heart has a regular rate and rhythm
2. When making macros for two words, you can use the first two letters from each word. Example: otne/otherwise negative 3. For longer words, use the first and last letter of the word. Example: ory/originally 4. Add letters to the beginning or ending of words to increase their use. Example: rom/range of motion – then add farom/full active range of motion 5. Create macros incorrectly.

6. Design macros for all of the headings you type. Example: hpi/HISTORY OF PRESENT ILLNESS: 7. Make macros for common drugs and phrases that you type on a daily basis. 8. Personalize your macros for particular doctors and the repetitive phrases that they use, such as physical exams, impressions, follow-ups, etc. 9. Add frequently typed names and addresses to your macro file. 10. Macro frequently typed dates and numbers. Typing numbers can drastically reduce your typing speed and production. Macro numbers whenever possible. 11. Use capitalization in the macros whenever needed. Example: Drug names, physicians, days of the week, months of the year, etc. 12. Don't be afraid to make your own macros or change the ones provided to better fit your needs.

Here are the instructions from Word to start creating your own macro list: (It can be a cumbersome process, but it is way worth the effort in the end!) I would recommend keying in 10 or so a day until you get the list you want. Start with terms from the specialty you are currently transcribing for. You will constantly be adding new macros of the course of your career. Good Luck!
Create a macro You can create a macro (macro: An action or a set of actions you can use to automate tasks. Macros are recorded in the Visual Basic for Applications programming language.) by using the macro recorder to record a sequence of actions, or you can create a macro from scratch by entering Visual Basic for Applications (VBA: A macro-language version of Microsoft Visual Basic that is used to program Windows applications and is included with several Microsoft applications.) code in the Visual Basic Editor (Visual Basic Editor: An environment in which you write new and edit existing Visual Basic for Applications code and procedures. The Visual Basic Editor contains a complete debugging toolset for finding syntax, run-time, and logic problems in your code.). You can also use both methods. You can record some steps, and then enhance them with additional code. By recording steps 1. On the Tools menu, point to Macro, and then click Record New Macro. 2. In the Macro name box, type a name for the macro. 3. In the Store macro in box, click the template (template: A file or files that contain the structure and tools for shaping such elements as the style and page layout of finished files. For example, Word templates can shape a single document, and FrontPage templates can shape an entire Web site.) or document in which you want to store the macro. 4. You can never have too many macros. Anytime you type a word or phrase more than three times in one day, you need to make a macro for it. Use the pages provided at the back of this guide to list the macros you create. Keep this guide by your computer for reference until you begin to get familiar with the macros you have started using and in no time, using the macros will become habit and you will start seeing your production rate increase.

12 TIPS FOR CREATING MACROS
1.
The simplest and most common way to make a macro is to use the first letter of each word. Leave out words such as a, the, and, etc. Example: hrrr/heart has a regular rate and rhythm
2. When making macros for two words, you can use the first two letters from each word. Example: otne/otherwise negative 3. For longer words, use the first and last letter of the word. Example: ory/originally 4. Add letters to the beginning or ending of words to increase their use. Example: rom/range of motion – then add farom/full active range of motion 5. Create macros incorrectly.

6. Design macros for all of the headings you type. Example: hpi/HISTORY OF PRESENT ILLNESS: 7. Make macros for common drugs and phrases that you type on a daily basis. 8. Personalize your macros for particular doctors and the repetitive phrases that they use, such as physical exams, impressions, follow-ups, etc. 9. Add frequently typed names and addresses to your macro file. 10. Macro frequently typed dates and numbers. Typing numbers can drastically reduce your typing speed and production. Macro numbers whenever possible. 11. Use capitalization in the macros whenever needed. Example: Drug names, physicians, days of the week, months of the year, etc. 12. Don't be afraid to make your own macros or change the ones provided to better fit your needs.

Here are the instructions from Word to start creating your own macro list: (It can be a cumbersome process, but it is way worth the effort in the end!) I would recommend keying in 10 or so a day until you get the list you want. Start with terms from the specialty you are currently transcribing for. You will constantly be adding new macros of the course of your career. Good Luck!
Create a macro You can create a macro (macro: An action or a set of actions you can use to automate tasks. Macros are recorded in the Visual Basic for Applications programming language.) by using the macro recorder to record a sequence of actions, or you can create a macro from scratch by entering Visual Basic for Applications (VBA: A macro-language version of Microsoft Visual Basic that is used to program Windows applications and is included with several Microsoft applications.) code in the Visual Basic Editor (Visual Basic Editor: An environment in which you write new and edit existing Visual Basic for Applications code and procedures. The Visual Basic Editor contains a complete debugging toolset for finding syntax, run-time, and logic problems in your code.). You can also use both methods. You can record some steps, and then enhance them with additional code. By recording steps 1. On the Tools menu, point to Macro, and then click Record New Macro. 2. In the Macro name box, type a name for the macro. 3. In the Store macro in box, click the template (template: A file or files that contain the structure and tools for shaping such elements as the style and page layout of finished files. For example, Word templates can shape a single document, and FrontPage templates can shape an entire Web site.) or document in which you want to store the macro. 4.
