Useful instructions for the classroom. Using simple and short instructions/language with the SD students will give them a good introduction to the English language. The exposure they get from you as the English teacher is very important. These are some examples of phrases or instructions that you can use with your students. REMEMBER TO ALWAYS ACCOMPANY THESE WITH GESTURES.
Listen to me. I want you to…. Come to the front… Can you write it on the board? Can you clean the board please? Did you do your homework? Can you open you book to page….? Can you close/open the… Can you bring me….. Please tidy the room. Tuck in your shirts. These are just examples only, of course there are a lot more you can use. The things that you say most often in class everyday should be on this list. Also, don’t ask “how are you?” to the whole class as they respond “I’m fine and you?” in unison. Teach them to respond individually! Basic verbs like write, read, speak, listen, walk, play, run, eat, drink etc. should be learned in the first month of the first class. They will learn implicitly if you use gestures!
