Customer: US Sugar TAW W.O. 211175 MOTOR MFG: TOSHIBA HP: 700 VOLTS: 4160 AMPS: 84 RPM: 1785 SERIAL: 051102187
Initial Inspection Disassemble and perform a complete mechanical and electrical inspection.
Initial findings Upon disassembly and inspection of the motor referenced above we found severe stator and rotor lamination damage due to mechanical friction between the rotor and stator, which in turn caused a winding failure. Root Cause of failure – Thermal Stress Thermal breakdown of the lubricant on the opposite drive end bearing (6320C3) was evident, causing the rolling elements to seize. It seems that once a catastrophic bearing failure had occurred, the motor continued to run long enough to cause severe iron damage to both the rotor and stator cores.
Recommendations ¾ Sandblast parts as necessary. ¾ Rewind stator-form wound-class F. ¾ Furnish and install new rotor bars. ¾ Un-stack shorted and damaged stator laminations, clean and replace as required, restack and core loss test prior to winding. ¾ Un-stack shorted and damaged rotor laminations, clean and replace as required, restack and core loss test prior to installing new bars. ¾ Vacuum Pressure Impregnation with 100% epoxy resin. ¾ Bore and bush opposite drive end bearing housing. ¾ Bore and bush opposite drive end bearing cap. ¾ Dynamically balance rotor. ¾ Furnish and install new bearings. ¾ Assemble, test and paint.
