June 18, 2009 To the American Baháʹí community Dear Baháʹí Friends, You have no doubt been following closely recent events in Iran. Our thoughts and prayers are with our dearly loved coreligionists, as well as their fellow citizens residing in Baháʹuʹlláh’s native land. A number of friends have asked whether Baháʹís may participate in demonstrations related to the events following the Iranian elections on June 12, and we wish to remind you of a fundamental principle in this regard which has guided the growth of the Cause from its inception–‐that Baháʹís must strictly avoid involvement in partisan politics. In the current circumstances in the United States, this means that Baháʹís should not participate in any demonstrations which are for or against particular candidates or parties in Iran or focused on the outcome of the election. While Baháʹís may participate in an event, such as a rally, which focuses strictly on the violations of human rights in Iran, it must be clear that they are doing so as individuals, with extreme care taken to ensure that they are not perceived as representing any Baháʹí institution or the Baháʹí Faith. However, since many of the current demonstrations may purport to be focused on human rights issues, more often than not partisan politics and the recent election are also themes for the event, and it would therefore be, in a majority of circumstances, most prudent for Bahaʹis not to participate. Should you have any questions about participation in an event, please turn to your Local Spiritual Assembly and abide by its guidance. The current situation in Iran may well provide increased opportunities for discussion of the Faith with friends, coworkers, and neighbors. You are encouraged to take advantage of these opportunities while at the same time exercising the wisdom and moderation in speech to which the Blessed Beauty exhorts us. In our constant prayers for the safety and well‐being of the Iranian Baháʹís and of the people of Iran, we find assurance in the words of Baháʹuʹlláh:
Let nothing grieve thee, O Land of Ta (Tehran), for God hath chosen thee to be the source of the joy of all mankind. With loving Baha’i greetings, Kenneth E. Bowers Secretary General
