Recommendation for Marie LaRussa November 11, 2009 To whom it may concern: I am happy to recommend Marie LaRussa to you as someone who would make an outstanding addition to your graduate school. Marie was a student in my section of English 5W, The Writing of Literary Criticism, in Spring Quarter 2008, and was clearly one of the best students I have had in the twenty-seven years I’ve been teaching college.. First of all, Marie is one of the most mature and responsible students I have ever worked with. She never missed class, was always prepared, and contributed a great deal to the discussions. I could always count on her to raise an intelligent opinion about whichever reading we were discussing that day. Marie also worked well with the other students in small group writing workshops, giving her peers suggestions about their essays in a manner that was both respectful and helpful. She has a very friendly, intelligent and humorous disposition that I am sure will enable her to work well with her professors as well as her fellow graduate students. In addition, Marie has the ability to provide thoughtful and discerning analyses and effectively convey her views in writing. In all three of her essays, Marie showed a sophistication one rarely finds at the undergraduate level. She has a talent for writing about complicated issues with clarity and purpose. I was particularly impressed with her essay on Eugene Ionesco’s play, “The Lesson,” in which she discussed a political theme that had not even occurred to me before. Because of her ability to closely analyze a subject, come up with a fresh, original perspective, and communicate her conclusions with clarity and grace, I am certain she will surpass the expectations she has set for herself as a researcher. In short, Marie works well with others, has a discerning, analytical mind, and can express herself effectively. I am confident that all of these qualities will make her an ideal addition to your graduate school. If you have any further questions about Marie, please do not hesitate to contact me. Sincerely, Randall Fallows, Ph.D., Lecturer, UCLA Writing Programs
