n o i t a m r o f n i g n i Find During the course of your studies you will need to find and use books and journals as well as other information sources.

Finding books The quickest and easiest way to locate books in the University Library or Learning Resources Centres is to use the library catalogue. The library catalogue can be accessed on and off campus. On campus Click on the library catalogue icon on the computer desktop: In addition to this, the University Library and Hull and Riseholme Learning Resources Centres have computers where the library catalogue can be accessed without the need to log on to a computer. Please note that ebooks cannot be accessed from these computers. Off campus Go to http://www.library.lincoln.ac.uk

Borrowing books Books can be checked out for a variety of loan periods. These include: 2 week (normal loan); 1 week; 3 day. Books in high demand may be kept in the Core Collection. These books can only be borrowed on a short loan basis (4 hours or overnight if taken out after 5pm). You can borrow a maximum of: 16 items if you are an undergraduate student; 20 items if you are a postgraduate student.

Ebooks The University has over 40,000 ebooks. The easiest way to search for ebooks is to do a general keyword search using the library catalogue and then limiting your search results to ebooks. For further information on accessing and using ebooks visit http://nn.nf/4656 * *Please note that if you are off campus you will be required to enter your username and password to access this page. Latest library news at http://librarynews.blogs.lincoln.ac.uk

7

Due dates and fines Books are checked out to you for a limited period to ensure that the book is accessible to all. If you would like to check out a book for longer you can renew it, as long as nobody has requested it. Books that have been requested by another user will have to be returned. You will be fined for books that are not returned or renewed by the due date. This is to encourage you to return the book. We will send an email 24 hours before your books are due back as a reminder, but it is your responsibility to return or renew books by the due date. You can renew books by: Logging on to the library catalogue (you will need your Account ID and PIN) before the book is due back; Telephoning the University Library or Learning Resources Centres even if the book is overdue; Visiting the University Library or Learning Resources Centres with your library card.

8

Find books at http://www.library.lincoln.ac.uk

Self-service The University Library has self-issue and return machines and Hull Learning Resources Centre has a self-issue only machine. You will need your Student ID card and PIN to use them. Please follow the instructions on the screen and do not forget to take your receipt as it will tell you when your books are due back. If you have any problems or wish to borrow a DVD, please go to the Library Services help desk or, if you are in Hull, pick up the phone located next to the self-issue machine. At our other centres, please take any books that you wish to check out to the Library Services help desk.

Finding and using journals Journals (also known as periodicals or magazines) are publications printed at regular intervals (weekly, fortnightly, monthly etc.), which help you keep up-to-date with the latest research in your subject area. Alternatively for a list of relevant current journal subscriptions by Faculty visit http://nn.nf/4666 *

If you are looking for journal articles about a particular subject you will need to search the databases on the e-Library page of the Portal http://nn.nf/4686 * Each database has a description of the type of information that it contains.
