UNIVERSAL IMMORTALITY a.k.a THE IMMORTALITY OF THE SOUL or INNATE IMMORTALITY as opposed to CONDITIONAL IMMORTALITY by EJ Hill (1977-)
Digg submit
Introduction UNIVERSAL IMMORTALITY - THE BELIEF THAT, BY DEFAULT, THE SOUL IS IMMORTAL: ETERNAL, INCORRUPTIBLE, INDESTRUCTIBLE AND IMPERISHABLE - THEREFORE, UNABLE TO DIE - CONCLUDING THE SAVED TO ETERNAL GLORY, AND THE LOST TO ETERNAL AGONY. Significance Within the church today, both Calvinist and Arminian; there is a teaching known as, "The Immortality of The Soul". This, in my opinion, is "one of the greatest misunderstandings" [35] of our time - a "mistake" [36] of epic proportions. Together "soul" and "spirit" are used almost 1100 times in the King James Version of the Bible. Nowhere, however, do we even once find the word "immortal" used in conjunction with either. Nowhere in the Old Testament do we find any reference to either "immortal" or "immortality". And in the New Testament we find the word "immortal" being used once, and "immortality" five times, all by Paul.
Defining Immortality Before determining either, the Universal or Conditional nature of the Soul's Immortality, we first have to define what is meant by the term "immortality". This section explains the nature of "immortality" as synonymous with that of "eternal life". THAT WHICH IS ETERNAL, THEREFORE, IS IMMORTAL and THAT WHICH IS IMMORTAL, LIVES FOREVER. Understanding the above, is extremely important in determining whether man's soul is immortal by nature, or by grace.

The Nature of Immortality A brief look at the Nature of Eternal Life and Immortality. Is it universal? Or is it conditional?
The Implications of Universal Immortality A look at the implications of a belief in the universal immortality of the soul.
Statements & Confessions The 1646 Westminster Confession of Faith Chapter IV. Of Creation. II. After God had made all other creatures, He created man, male and female, with reasonable and immortal souls, endued with knowledge, righteousness, and true holiness after His own image, having the law of God written in their hearts, and power to fulfill it; and yet under a possibility of transgressing, being left to the liberty of their own will, which was subject unto change. Besides this law written in their hearts, they received a command not to eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil; which while they kept were happy in their communion with God, and had dominion over the creatures. There exists NO Biblical proof that God created Adam and Eve with "immortal souls"; to the contrary, Genesis chapter 3 verse 22 suggests the opposite. Chapter XXXII. Of the State of Man After Death, and of the Resurrection of the Dead. I. The bodies of men, after death, return to dust, and see corruption; but their souls (which neither die nor sleep), having an immortal subsistence, immediately return to God who gave it. The souls of the righteous, being then made perfect in holiness, are received into the highest heavens, where they behold the face of God in light and glory, waiting for the full redemption of their bodies; and the souls of the wicked are cast into hell, where they remain in torments and utter darkness, reserved to the judgment of the great day. Besides these two places for souls separated from their bodies, the Scripture acknowledgeth none. The 1689 Second London Baptist Confession of Faith Chapter 4. Of Creation. 2. After God had made all other creatures, He created man, male and female, with reasonable and immortal souls, rendering them fit unto that life to God for which they were created; being made after the image of God, in knowledge, righteousness, and true holiness; having the law of God written in their hearts, and power to fulfill it, and yet under a possibility of transgressing, being left to the liberty of their own will, which was subject to change. (Genesis 1:27; Genesis 2:7; Ecclesiastes 7:29; Genesis 1:26; Romans 2:14, 15; Genesis 3:6) Again, there exists NO Biblical proof, whatsoever, that God created Adam and Eve with "immortal souls"; to the contrary, Genesis chapter 3 verse 22 suggests the opposite.

Chapter 31. Of the State of Man after Death and of the Resurrection of the Dead. The bodies of men after death return to dust, and see corruption; but their souls, which neither die nor sleep, having an immortal subsistence, immediately return to God who gave them. The souls of the righteous being then made perfect in holiness, are received into paradise, where they are with Christ, and behold the face of God in light and glory, waiting for the full redemption of their bodies; and the souls of the wicked are cast into hell; where they remain in torment and utter darkness, reserved to the judgment of the great day; besides these two places, for souls separated from their bodies, the Scripture acknowledgeth none. Chapter 33. Of the State of Man after Death and of the Resurrection of the Dead. 1.
