SECTION B Answer ALL the questions in this section.
MARYBELLE DAIRY James Strachan’s family have been dairy farmers for 5 generations, but as milk prices continuously fell he decided the time was right to do something different. James and his brothers wanted to open their own dairy and produce a range of products under their own brand. They carried out a feasibility study including interviews with local people. On the basis of this study they decided to go ahead and start Marybelle dairy. Startup capital was raised by selling some land and mortgaging the farm. Their first task was to establish a milk network, despite being a loss leader they thought that regular deliveries of milk to a wide range of customers was the key to developing value added products such as cream, yoghurt butter and cheese. James also planned to target the supermarkets and Asda took them on. As an environmentally friendly producer and in order to differentiate their milk, they have recently run a product trial of a recyclable milk container in their local Asda store in Lowestoft. The initial 50 bottles a day were quickly bought and there are now plans to expand the product into more Asda branches. The business has now been successful in expanding beyond its original target market. It currently employs 20 staff and has a turnover of £1.2 million.
