Water exists in three phases: •Solid(ice) •Liquid •Gaseous(steam)
What happen to the temperature when ice melts????
Temperature remains the same
When a solid melts or a liquid is boiling, heat is absorbed but the temperature remains constant. There are four main changes of phase: •Melting •Boiling •Condensation • Solidification
The four main changes of phase are summarized in figure below
The common characteristics of the four process in the change of phase are: iii.A substance undergoes a change of phase at particular temperature. iv.Heat energy is transferred during phase of change v.During change of phase, the temperature remains constant even though there is transfer of heat
