JOHN MCCAIN
FINANCIAL CRISIS
Deregulation of the financial industry contributed to the current financial crisis. McCain says he does not regret supporting that deregulation.1
Obama tried to prevent this crisis by introducing the Stop Fraud Act in 2006 to “stop mortgage transactions which promote fraud, risk, abuse.”2
IRAQ WAR
McCain voted to authorize Bush to invade Iraq. He has no timetable for bringing our troops home — except “victory.” 3
Obama stood with the minority who refused to give Bush authority to go war based on false claims. He pledges to bring troops home in 16 months. 4
McCain has repeatedly voted against increasing the minimum wage — 19 times. 5
Obama has consistently worked to raise the minimum wage. His goal is to lift it to $9.50/hour.6
McCain disagrees with the Supreme Court and would criminalize abortion, except in cases of rape, incest and saving the mother’s life. His running mate would make no exceptions.7
Obama would uphold the Supreme Court’s ruling that protects a woman’s right to act on her conscience.8
Children’s Defense Fun gives John McCain a score of 10%, the worst senator for children.9
The Children’s Defense Fund gives Obama a score of 60%.10
ENVIRONMENT
The League of Conservation Voters gives McCain a “lifetime score” of 24% for positions on the environment and global warming.11
The League of Conservation Voters gives Obama a score of 86%.8 His plan would create five million clean energy jobs.12
LOBBYISTS/ ETHICS IN GOVERNMENT
Seven top McCain advisors are career corporate lobbyists. Forty McCain “fund-raisers and top advisers have lobbied or worked for…gambling interests.” 13
Lobbyists advise Obama but he refuses their contributions. He sponsored Senate bills that the Washington Post called “the strongest ethics legislation to emerge from Congress.”14
He sponsored 21 bills & missed the most votes of any Senator (‘07-08 session). His long-term Republican associate, Senator Cochran, says: “The thought of his being president sends a cold chill down my spine. He’s erratic. He’s hotheaded.” 15
Obama sponsored 71 bills in the 0708 session. Conservative Christine Allison, wife of a former president of National Journal: “I find Mr. Obama to be prudent, thoughtful, and courageous. His life story embodies conservative values…”16
