Today, Andrew, you are a piano man Seeing his friend, John, play the piano got Andrew interested in music. It was challenging at first, but a talented, patient and understanding teacher like Kenny McKenzie inspired and encouraged him. Andrew started playing and played well: jazz, Bach, Mozart and Billy Joel. Recently, he started learning electric guitar. “He’s definitely the most astonishing student I’ve ever had – no lie – he’s unstoppable almost, an extraordinarily fast learner.” – Kenny

Vids uploaded to YouTube Andrew teaching Billy Joel songs.

In 5th-6th grade choir, Andrew was selected to solo with the Brooklyn Conservatory of Music Orchestra and three New York area high school choirs. He didn’t talk about it. He didn’t brag. Andrew doesn’t need the spotlight or attention to do well.

Great-great grandfather, Philip Diamond

In Las Vegas, Andrew interviews Marsha, Bubbe’s cousin from Russia, for his family history project

“I wish I would have gotten to know my grandfather a little more. Papa Phil always would say, ‘Hey handsome devil.’ He was fun.”

An episode of Oprah about tracing African American family roots through the times of slavery gave Jordan and Andrew the idea to record their family tree. It became his bar mitzvah project. He found out about his ancestors’ and relatives’ occupations, their personal lives and where and when they lived. He interviewed family members. Then he built a tree online. He ended up with 1,200 relatives. He consulted with Aunt Julianne and interviewed his dad’s Aunt Barbara, who knew about her fifth great grandmother. He wrote Rabbi Rosswaski in Berlin, who shares a great grandfather with Bubbe. The rabbi called him. Family members added facts and stories. It allowed him to share family history so everyone can stay in touch.
