The webinar will also examine the monitoring of scour critical bridges, and highlight efforts to develop guidelines for implementing quality control and quality assurance for bridge inspections. Participants must register at least 24 hours in advance of the start of the Webinar, space is limited, and there is a fee for non-TRB Sponsor employees. The update reports on research, technology, and development activities taking place within the U.S. Department of Transportation. [More] Traffic Volume Trends: December 2008 The U.S. Federal Highway Administration has released the latest issue of Traffic Volume Trends, which is a monthly report based on hourly traffic count data reported by the states. According to the report, travel on all roads and streets declined by 1.6 percent (-3.8 billion vehicle miles) in December 2008 as compared with December 2007. Travel for the month is estimated to be 237.2 billion vehicle miles. Cumulative travel for 2008 was down by 3.6 percent (-107.9 billion vehicle miles). The cumulative estimate for the year is 2,921.9 billion vehicle miles of travel. Airport Offsite Passenger Service Facilities: An Option for Improving Landside Access: Volume II: Access Characteristics and Travel Demand The Virginia Department of Transportation has released a report that examines offsite airport facilities that provide ground transportation, baggage and passenger check in, and other transportation services to departing air passengers. International Research Evaluation of 2+1 Roads with Cable Barriers The Swedish National Road and Transport Research Institute (VTI) has released a report that examines the Swedish Road Administration's program on increasing safety on existing 13-meter roads and two-lane expressways. [More] New European Car Safety Rating System Euro NCAP, the organization that assesses the safety of new cars in Europe, has introduced a new overall car safety rating.
