Interview with Mr. hafiz Hafeez ur Rehman Interviewer: what position do you hold in the market? Interviewee: I am the president of birds association in the market. I also own a shop. Interviewer: what kind of product do you have in your shop? Interviewee: birds and cages Interviewer: from where are they brought? Interviewee: they are brought from farms, are also imported and people also come to sell them. Interviewer: how long have you been in the market or in this business? Interviewee: since partition (1947) Interviewer: Are you satisfied with the conditions of your shop? Interviewee: yes I am satisfied with the conditions. Interviewer: Is your shop cleaned daily? Interviewee: yes its cleaned daily Interviewer: who is responsible for cleaning the shop? Interviewee: we have hired sweeper to serve this purpose. Interviewer: then why is there so much pollution (smell & dirt) in the market? Interviewee: the main reason is the unloading of chicken. The trucks that bring them are mainly responsible for pollution . They create lot of waste by throwing dead chicken, and also they wash their trucks without cleaning the floor which at last lead to pollution in the place.

Interviewer: how does the environment considering the pollution affects you?

Interviewee: it’s not tolerable at all but now we are used to it. Interviewer: does the pollution affect your sales? Interviewee: yes it has affected a lot. People do not come to the market as the smell is not tolerable. In short the number of buyer shave reduced. Interviewer: any other reason that affects your sales? Interviewee: yes, the ban of wildlife association on the selling of certain bird such as peacock and many other birds has reduced the number of bird lovers. However according to act of 1973 there is no restriction on the selling of these birds. Interviewer: what is the average number of your daily customers? Interviewee: approximately 80 and above Interviewer: are you paying for the maintenance of the building? Interviewee: yes we are currently paying Rs 7000 for the maintenance of the building Interviewer: how much are you paying to your employees? Interviewee: Rs 7000 Interviewer: how much are u paying for cleanliness and security purpose? Interviewee: we pay Rs 20 each to both the sweepers and security guards. Interviewer: does the ministry of health or any other organization visit the place? Interviewee: ministry of health do not visit the place but MCL people do visit the place once a year. Interviewer: who are you answerable to you? Interviewee: a union has been formed to whom we are answerable. Interviewer: has the building reconstructed since it has been shifted? Interviewee: no nothing has been done in this regard.

Interviewer: have you suffered from any diseases in the past? Interviewee: except for flue and cough I haven’t suffered from any disease. Interviewer: any suggestion you want to give for betterment of the market? Interviewee: yes, the restriction on the sales of certain birds should be removed and moreover by making use of another area for the trucks that supply chicken. By utilizing area at the back of the market
