Elon Residents Raised Concerns to The Board of Alderman after Proposed Residential Subdivision By Melissa Beck The town of Elon Board of Alderman held their agenda meeting on Monday April 1 at 6 p.m. to address the propositions and concerns of the Elon residents. The meeting began by addressing topics such as the Recreation and Park Comprehensive Plan, the 2019 Compensation and Classification Study and the noise ordinance. A resident of Elon then addressed the Shallowford Church Road Major Development Plan, displaying the full plan for the to-be implemented residential subdivision. Diamondback Investment Group Inc. employee, Paul Holst proposed this as a two-phase plan where the first property will develop 25 lots in the west and then will have 22 lots between Creek and Cable Road. Holst and partners submitted this proposal to the Board of Alderman and have received preliminary approval. After the forum was open to public discussion, Jim Sykes, an Elon resident who lives on Spanish Oak, advised the Board to take care of the roadways before implementing this project.

“There’s no discussion about roadways cause the school system doesn’t have to deal with roadways,” Sykes said. Sykes is one of more than five residents who vocalized their concerns at the meeting. Elon University business professor, Elena Kennedy bought her home in the Spanish Oak area three years ago knowing that there was one way access and is now concerned that frequent traffic will be dangerous for the children and animals in the neighborhood. “We do not have sidewalks, we do not have curbs, so if you’re navigating the neighborhood you’re doing so on the roadway, there’s no other alternative,” Kennedy said.

Elon residents also expressed their concern about the annexation component, as most of the residents living in that subdivision rely on septic water while the new lots will have access to Burlington’s sewer and water lines. An Elon resident spoke about the poor condition of the water some residents are already experiencing and advised the Board to reconsider other ways the new residential lot can receive water that will not jeopardize the existing water supply. The Board of Alderman is postponing all consideration to the meeting next Tuesday April 9 where they may choose to vote on the plan.
