Many entrepreneurs read books of war like the Art Of War by Sun Tzu because many times we have to get ourselves in the warrior mindset in order to handle all the hardships that come along or to handle the competitors that we’ll need to be better than. There are many good movies that could be considered great entrepreneurial movies. You’ll notice that my list will tend to be more of the “dark side” of entrepreneurialism.

Lord Of War

Why I Think You Should See It Yuri decided that he was going to get his version of The American Dream no matter what it took. Throughout the movie you like the character and realize that he isn’t a bad guy, he just took his life into his own hands and decided that his most exciting life would be made in gun-running. Who can blame him? Watch it and see.

Lord Of War Quotes Yuri Orlov: There are over 550 million firearms in worldwide circulation. That's one firearm for every

Plost Summary courtesy of IMDB.Com In the 80s in Little Odessa, the Ukrainian immigrant Yuri Orlov (Nicolas Cage) decides to change his economical life and becomes an arm dealer with his brother Vitaly Orlov (Jared Leto). twelve people on the planet. The only question is: How do we arm the other 11? My Thoughts: A sick thought but we’ve all had moments where we think in sick and greedy ways. This may be taking it a little far but there is no doubt that the thought is entrepreneurial. Yuri Orlov: The first and most important rule of gunrunning is: Never get shot with your own merchandise. My Thoughts: Always establish ground rules for your business to follow...especially in gun-running!

Meanwhile, he becomes a millionaire and uses his money to seduce the beautiful Ava Fontaine (Bridget Moynahan) and they get married, having a son.

Yuri Orlov: I sell to leftists, and rightists. I sell to pacifists, but they're not the most regular customers. My Thoughts: Sell to whoever is willing and able to buy. Smart man.

The detective Jack Valentine (Ethan Hawke) chases Yuri trying to put him in jail, but in the end he understands that Yuri is a necessary evil for the interest of his nation.

Yuri Orlov: Selling a gun for the first time is a lot like having sex for the first time. You're excited but you don't really know what the hell you're doing. And some way, one way or another, it's over too fast. My Thoughts: That’s how any sale is. It’s nerve wracking and over before you know it.

Pursuit Of Happyness

Christopher Gardner: Hey. Don't ever let somebody tell you... You can't do something. Not even me. All right? Christopher: All right. Christopher Gardner: You got a dream... You gotta protect it. People can't do somethin' themselves, they wanna tell you you can't do it. If you want somethin', go get it. Period. My Thoughts: Amazing quote. Christopher Gardner: It was right then that I started thinking about Thomas Jefferson on the Declaration of Independence and the part about our right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. pursuit part in there? That maybe happiness is something that we can only pursue and maybe we can actually never have it. No matter what. How did he know that? My Thoughts: Such an impressive thought. Many times we are most happy when we are pursuing our happiness. Christopher: What are you doing? Christopher Gardner: Paying a parking ticket. Christopher: ...But we don't have a car anymore. Christopher Gardner: Yeah, I know... My Thoughts: Any entrepreneur has had times like these when you wonder what in the world is happening for so many things to go wrong at once. When it rains, it pours.

Scarface

You need people like me. You need people like me so you can point your fuckin' fingers and say, "That's the bad guy." So... what that make you? Good? You're not good. You just know how to hide, how to lie. Me, I don't have that problem. Me, I always tell the truth. Even when I lie. My Thoughts: This is as true as it gets. Many people put on an act of being good and proper when they are many times hiding lies. Like it or not he was out there and let it be known who he was without any regrets or apologies. There is something noble in that. Tony Montana: I'm Tony Montana! You fuck with me, you fuckin' with the best!

They can’t trust anyone so they make sure that family is the most important part of their life since those are the only people they can trust. The Godfather movies give an example of how to carry yourself as a powerful, strong presence as Marlon Brando did in the movie and later Al Pacino did in the 2nd and 3rd Godfather movies.

The Godfather Quotes Michael: Fredo, you're my older brother, and I love you. But don't ever take sides with anyone against the Family again. Ever. My Thoughts: Always stay loyal to the people who are taking care of you.

Why I Think You Should See It The mafia is clearly an entrepreneurial endeavor and it takes guts. They live outside the law and live by codes of behavior in order to stay alive.

Sonny: We don't discuss business at the table. My Thoughts: Great quote.

The Fountainhead

He maintains the attitude that there people out there who will see things his way and will hire him. He turns out to be right. It’s one of my favorite books of all time. The movie isn’t quite the same but is still worth seeing.

The Fountainhead Quotes Ellsworth Toohey: I play the stock market of the spirit and I sell short. My Thoughts: Ellsworth is a critic who doesn’t believe in human nature. He believes that most of the time people will let you down. That can be very true. Howard Roark: A building has integrity, just as a man and just as seldom! It must be true to its own idea, have its own form, and serve its own purpose!

Why I Think You Should See It Howard Roark has such a strong personality that it is hard imagining that anyone in real life could maintain his attitude. Dominique Francon: I wish I had never seen your building. It's the things that we admire or want that enslave us, I'm not easy to bring into submission. My Thoughts: It’s easy to get so fascinated with another person or object that we lose our whole sense of self. We want to do anything for that person.

The Aviator

DiCaprio plays the role perfectly.

Boiler Room

I love this movie. The main character Seth is a young smart entrepreneur who is looking for his way to make a fortune. First he is running a casino for college kids and then he gets recruited into an investment house. His progression from beginner sales person to expert is very good.

Boiler Room Quotes Jim Young: And there is no such thing as a no sale call. A sale is made on every call you make. Either you sell the client some stock or he sells you a reason he can't. Either way a sale is made, the only question is who is gonna close? You or him? Now be relentless, that's it, I'm done. My Thoughts: Very true.

Plot Summary courtesy of IMDB.Com A young man has dropped out of Queens College but desperately wants to please his father, a federal judge who's harsh with his son. At his father's insistence, Seth Davis closes a casino he operates in his own house, mostly for college students. Thinking he'll please dad, he takes a job in a small brokerage house, an hour from Manhattan, where trainees make cold calls to lists of well-paid men, and then apply high-pressure tactics to sell initial public offerings exclusive to the firm.

Seth Davis: I read this article a while back, that said that Microsoft employs more millionaire secretary's that any other company in the world. They took stock options over Christmas bonuses. It was a good move. I remember there was this picture, of one of the groundskeepers next to his Ferrari. Blew my mind. You see shit like that, and it just plants seeds, makes you think its possible, even easy. My Thoughts: Great quote! Citizen Kane

Emily: Really Charles, people will think-... Charles Foster Kane: - -what I tell them to think. My Thoughts: Charles Foster Kane was a publisher so he had massive influence over a large segment of the population. He knew he could influence the thoughts of the population. Charles Foster Kane: [His answer to being blackmailed] There's only one person in the world who's going to decide what I'm going to do and that's me... My Thoughts: Powerful, confident men never let others dictate what they are going to do and how they are going to lives their lives. They do not allow themselves to be pushed around. Susan: I don't know many people.

Plot Summary courtesy of IMDB.Com Orson Welles' "Citizen Kane" is widely considered to be the greatest film to ever come out of Hollywood. The film is basically about a group of reporters who are trying to decipher the last word ever spoke by Charles Foster Kane, the millionaire newspaper tycoon: "Rosebud." The film begins with a news reel detailing Kane's life for the masses, and then from there, we are shown

Charles Foster Kane: I know too many people. I guess we're both lonely. My Thoughts: It’s seems like the more famous a person gets the more isolated they become. his life is taking. He doesn’t necessarily want him working in a blue collar job but wants him to create an entrepreneurial endeavor rather than tearing apart other people’s companies for profit. Bud Fox: How much is enough? Gordon Gekko: It's not a question of enough, pal. It's a zero sum game, somebody wins, somebody loses. Money itself isn't lost or made, it's simply transferred from one perception to another. My Thoughts: As far as money transferring that is very true today with the collapse of our economy. Money wasn’t lost, it’s just transferred hands. Smart people will make a lot of money in the next coming years while people who didn’t keep up with their financial knowledge will continue to lose. Gordon Gekko: I don't throw darts at a board. I bet on sure things. Read Sun-tzu, The Art of War. Every battle is won before it is ever fought.

Why I Think You Should See It It’s a classic story of a young kid wanting to succeed even thought his dad thinks he’s getting too deep. The kid wont listen because the lure of money is so great that he’ll do anything to get it.

Gordon Gekko: This is the kid, calls me 59 days in a row, wants to be a player. There ought to be a picture of you in the dictionary under persistence kid. My Thoughts: Persistence. It takes balls to show up everyday and hope they don’t kick you out and hope you get a shot at the position. A few years ago I had a girlfriend who showed up to a firm in Chicago every business day for a month straight. She wouldn’t take no for an answer. She got the job. She now works for The Pentagon (or possibly now the CIA). Amazing girl.
