CAJONGO
CAJONGO Produced by Mike Peaslee. Co-produced by Troels Folmann, Gregg Stephens. Simar Balbal.
The history behind the upcoming Tonehammer Cajongo (combination of Cajon and Bongo) is actually one of darkness and despair. The Slaves of West and Central African origin are considered to be the origin of the Cajon drum, which is essentially a wooden box with a thin sheet of wood nailed on as the sixth side acting as the striking surface. The Cajon is a highly featured instrument in Cuban music, which also traditionally contains the bongo. The Bongo was also brought from Africa to Cuba by the slaves and both are often featured in salsa, rumba, changui and other traditional styles.
1
Tonehammer decided to explore both instruments extensively by sampling two sets of professional Cajons (snare and non-snare) and three sets of professional Bongos (small, medium and large). We recorded them as ensemble groups, divisi groups and individual solo sets. The end result includes nearly 8000 samples and 34 instrument patches. We sampled both types of instruments close and dry, using hands, fingers, mallets, sticks and brushes. We made sure to cover a huge range of different playing surfaces on all instruments. Both of the Cajons were also recorded with two different microphone positions (internal and external), so users can truly get the sound they wish. Then, we also captured the 2 cajons and the large primary bongo pair a second time, in a warm, slightly wet wooden percussion studio, just to allow that much more user flexibility. And as a bonus, we've included a special section of ensemble hand claps, finger snaps and hotrod stick clacks. All instruments and articulations in the library have a full 10 round robins per velocity layer, and up to 10 velocity layers each.

INSTALLATION We Use Winrar (version 3.80 or later) or other compatible program to un-compress the “Tonehammer_Cajongo.rar” file into its own folder in your sample library directory. Make sure to preserve the included folder structure. This is usually done by selecting the “extract to'...” option in Winrar or UnrarX. Here’s a link to winrar for PC: http://www.win-rar.com/download.html Here’s a link to UnRarX for OSX: http://www.unrarx.com/ You should now be able to open and play the .nki files. Be aware that all of our .nki files are compatible with full retail versions of Kontakt 2 (version 2.2.4 or later) or Kontakt 3 (version 3.0 or later) only. Note: Free Kompakt Players and Kontakt Players that come bundled with DAW software, hardware or other sample libraries won't be able to load ours or any other instrument library that didn't originally come bundled with it. We're sorry, but it's the way Kontakt and Kompakt Players work by design. However, since our wave directories are open, you can translate the patches into whatever format you like. There are a few conversion utilities available that can make the translation process much easier, such as as CDXtract. Just make sure you don't share them with others without asking. Each user must purchase their own copy of this instrument from Tonehammer.

BONGO 4 This large bongo set was recorded in a wide stereo studio environment. We recorded it in a well controlled extremely dry setting and in a medium sized percussion studio, with an equal distribution of acoustic control and hardwood surfaces, to give it a smooth, clear and yet warm sustain. The modwheel controls the length of room reverberation. As you roll the modwheel forward, the sound will become drier. The sustain will further shorten and actually begin to dampen the instrument over the last 20% of the modwheel's range. Bongo_4_wet_Hands.nki Bare hands on rim, edge and tonal center of each drum head Bongo_4_wet_Brushes.nki Nylon brushes played on the rim and center of each drum head. Bongo_4_wet_Stick_Clacks.nki Drum sticks played against the sides and bottoms of each drum. Bongo_4_wet_All.nki Hands, brushes and drum stick clacks Bongo_4_wet_All_lite.nki A low memory version of the main All patch.

SOLO CAJON 1 The two cajons were recorded very close in wide stereo, with both external and internal microphone positions. We recorded both instruments in a well controlled extremely dry setting and in a medium sized percussion studio, with an equal distribution of acoustic control and hardwood surfaces, to give it a smooth, clear and yet warm sustain. The patches are set up as multi-instruments, with the external mics and internal mics in separate instrument patches, allowing you to fully adjust the tone and presence of the instrument to suit your tastes. Modwheel controls muting/damping in the dry patches and additionally allows you to control the size/length of room reverberation in the wet patch. Solo Snare Cajon This cajon has a pair of guitar strings strung across the inside surface of the front plate, which provide a short snap or sustaining buzz, depending on where and how you play the different surfaces of the Cajon. Cajon_snare_hands_dry.nkm Fingers and palms playing on various surfaces over the whole cajon, including the front center, side edge, top edge, side top, side center, rear face, etc. Cajon_snare_sticks&mallets_dry.nkm Felt mallets playing on various surfaces over the whole cajon, including the front center, side edge, top edge, side center, etc. Cajon_snare_hands_wet.nkm Fingers and palms playing on the front center, top center and sides, recorded out in the drum studio. Modwheel controls both room length and note damping.
