Central Market was built by the British government. It was used as a wet market, known as Pasar Besar Kuala Lumpur. The old Market Square becomes an open area commonly used as a recreation area. Central Market has been classified as a Heritage Site by the Malaysian Heritage Society and it is now a landmark for Malaysian Culture and Heritage displaying a wide variety of Malaysian Arts and Handicrafts, Batek, Antiques and attractive souvenirs. The market survived from its demolition during the construction of Dayabumi near Klang River banks. The market was renovated into vibrant and colourful new style. Melewar Leisure Sdn Bhd, a subsidiary of Kuala Lumpur’s Melewar Berhad took over the ownership of the building and used it to promote the Malaysian Culture through the sales of Malaysian Arts and Handicrafts products .It was officially known as Pasar Budaya until now. Central Market Sdn Bhd took over the market from Melewar Leisure Sdn Bhd. The Annexe Central Market, located at the back of main building that formerly housed a cineplex, was opened. It houses art galleries, theatre and music performance spaces, and arts and craft shops. It is one of the major art spaces in Kuala Lumpur and is a hub of activity all year long which features artworks and performances by local, regional and international artists.
